'Wow! What a view!' is the first thing guests say when they arrive at our 'combo' condo on La Madera Beach in Zihuatanejo. The condo is directly above the beach and access to the water is just a few steps out the door of our building and down about 72 stairs to the soft sand. It's a short and easy oceanfront walk to downtown markets, shopping, restaurants and events.
There are no windows on the south side of the apartment which faces the Bay—it’s totally open—so the visibility is amazing. It’s sort of like being on a ship—with a constant ocean breeze wafting through. In the evenings, winds usually shift from coming in from the ocean to coming from land, so there is a lovely breeze on the town side as well. This open style is typical of Zihuatanejo because temperatures rarely go below 70º at night. In 'winter,' the daytime temperature in the apartment goes up to about 85º max.
We call this our 'combo' condo because just across the hall from the bayside apartment we have a separate living space that faces the mountains to the north and overlooks the city of Zihuatanejo. The set-up is ideal for two couples who want to spend time with each other, but who also want privacy. Grandparents can claim the bayside bedroom and turn the town side over to the grandchildren and their parents.
On the bayside you can settle down in a comfortable wicker chair (or rocking chair) to watch boats of all kinds, lots of birds, fish (as they jump or are in schools that create interesting looking ripples and shadows in the water), para-sailors, local fishermen casting nets and much more. It's different all day every day. We've even keep binoculars in the apartment for your viewing pleasure.
The bayside bedroom faces the water so you can sit up in bed and see all the way out to the Pacific ocean. Or you can close the wooden shutters and turn on the air conditioner. There is an east-facing window that opens to bring in fresh air and there's a small work desk perfect for a laptop. There is a half-bay in the bedroom area and a full bath (shower only) across from the bedroom.
The bayside has a fairly large kitchen area and a beautiful oval glass-top dining room table that seats up to 6 people. Guests can also enjoy visiting while sitting around the gorgeous wooden counter that surrounds the kitchen. There are elegant bar stools with comfortable cushions and the lights above the bar are the 'bird's nest' style seen all over Zihua. Every light in the living room is on a rheostat so you can create a soft, romantic mood while you listen to the waves.
The town-side space has an efficiency kitchen and a glass-top dining table that can seat up to 4. There is a very large, light and airy bedroom with a king-size bed, dresser and writing table. The living room has bamboo furniture, including a padded love seat, an arm chair and a sofa that is a 'trundle bed' that rolls out to provide an extra sleeping space. Our grandsons (ages 9 and 13) love to sleep on it, but it may not be a super comfortable arrangement for large adults. The town side has two full (shower only) bathrooms.
Both bay-facing and town-facing spaces have air-conditioning, cable TV, paperback libraries and wireless high-speed Internet access. Both kitchens have 2-burner stoves and come with small appliances including a microwave, blender, coffeemaker and toaster oven as well as nice tableware, glassware and cookware. There are 5-gallon bottled water dispensers in each kitchen. Each bedroom has a safe. One of the best features on both sides is decent water pressure. As those who have been to Mexico beach areas know, this is very good news. We have a water storage tank with an automatic pump in each apartment to ensure as good pressure as possible. The downside is that when the pumps work to draw water there is a rather loud noise for about 10 seconds. After a while, you don't notice it and it's a little price to pay for a big pay-off.
Both spaces are equipped with in-line water heaters because electricity is extremely expensive, water is in short supply and after a day on the beach, a warm-to-cool shower is all most people want. The hot water lasts 'long enough' but don't expect it to be constantly hot as it typically would be in the U.S. or Canada.
In February 2012 we refurbished, renovated, repaired and replaced furniture and fixtures to make sure our guests will be as comfortable as possible. There are new ceiling fans and light fixtures on both sides and the wooden kitchen counter on the bayside has been completely refinished. We had new custom tables made for the living room and added new kitchen shelves. We bought a new refrigerator for the town side and a new air conditioner for the bayside.
Our building has a private swimming pool that overlooks a little 'jungle' and the bay. Picture yourself sitting in a lounge chair reading a book, or floating on an air mattress under a clear blue sky, and simply lifting your eyes to get a great view of Zihuatanejo Bay. Wow. We always are amazed to find ourselves in this tropical paradise and we hope you will come and enjoy it, too.

Bahia (Bay) Zihuatanejo is directly in front of our Bayside condo and you can see the mouth of the bay where it meets the Pacific Ocean. About: We live in Santa Fe, New Mexico at 7,000 feet. It's an amazing place that is a wonderful destination for visitors, especially in summer and fall. However, it gets darn cold in the winter so we've been taking trips to the tropics for all of the 30+ years we've lived in the mountains.
We fell in love with Zihuatanejo in 2002 on a weeklong vacation. We had been to many other beaches in Mexico, along the Pacific and around the Yucatan, but Zihua has everything we love about Mexico. It's a small town, easy going and beautiful.
Why Zihuatanejo: Bahia Suites is right above La Madera beach. Walk out the front door, turn right then take the stairway down to the beach. It's that simple.
There are only about 22 condos in the building so it feels like a home more than a big high-rise would. It has a very nice swimming pool and amazing views.
The architecture is very esthetic -- sort of art deco -- with arched doorways, rounded corners, lots of gorgeous dark wood from native trees and excellent use of tiles, light and shade.
