Ocean Isle Beach house description
Want to stay in a treehouse on the beach? Note: Right now at high tide there is very little beach in front of the house. This unique house is located directly on the beach on the quiet east end of this family friendly island, perfect for beachcombing, walking, or just sitting on the deck enjoying the idyllic setting with incredible views and the calming effect of the tranquil ocean waters. Ocean Isle is situated on a protected stretch of the Atlantic coastline with a directly south-facing beach which keeps the ocean calm and the sun shining over the ocean from dawn to dusk. The house features an open design with a huge master bedroom, another large bedroom, and a loft upstairs with balconies overlooking the two-story living room with two walls of top-to-bottom windows for incredible views of the ocean and Shallotte inlet.
About the treehouse: There are no large trees on Ocean Isle Beach so we trucked in 20 40-foot telephone poles, sunk them deep into the sand 10 feet apart, and built our tree house around them using pole frame construction. The poles are mostly exposed and obvious both inside and outside the house and give it a completely unique character. There are wooden floors throughout, except in the master bedroom which is carpeted. The spiral staircases were designed and built from scratch by the Roberts family and the house itself was built by the Roberts family with their own hands and everybody pitching in. Every bedroom has access to a porch and there are both upstairs and downstairs decks on the ocean side of the house. We love spending time in this treehouse on the beach and we think you will, too.

Oceanfront yes. But that is all this has going for it. Very dirty. Bottom shelves of all the tables had so much dust that they appeared fuzzy. Under the sinks was very dirty and wet. Behind the chest and the beds were thick with dirt and dust. The electrical wiring is dangerous.Light fixtures are missing and wires are sticking out of the wall. Half the outlets do not work and only the two light switches in the kitchen work. Kitchen appliances ran off an orange extension cord run under the table and up the wall. One ceiling fan ran off of extension cord also, but quite working while we were there, when the outlet got hot. Outlets that do work become very hot to touch when used. Bathrooms faucets leaked. Steady stream in the bathtubs/showers (not drips) and the master bathroom tub did not have a faucet, only a pipe sticking out of the tub. Downstairs shower/bathroom smelled of urine/mold. No ceiling in closet between two downstairs bedrooms, so all sounds from one bedroom to another was very loud. Loft bedrooms had open concept so no privacy there. Floors were very noisy. No sound proofing anywhere. So anyone walking in upstairs bedrooms kept anybody downstairs awake. Doors to downstairs bedroom would not close. During high tide water came over sandbags and into street so you are stranded till tide goes out. Kitchen sink stopped up twice while we were there. Kitchen stove is very tempermental. Stove eyes go from off to high and very little between. Smoke detectors batteries were dead. Outside decks had nail heads sticking up. Very bad for bare feet. I would not recommend this property till some major cleaning and electrical overhauling was done.

Owner response: Last year was very difficult for us with the extreme erosion problems. We were forced to put much time, effort, money, and worry into simply saving the house from falling into the ocean. These problems prevented us from dedicating the necessary resources to regular maintenance and cleaning which caused some of the problems mentioned in this review. The high tides are beyond our control, but since we discovered that this is happening, I have taken to consulting the tide charts for predicted high tides and warning prospective renters of the possibility of this occurring and offering discounts during these times. Additionally, there is beach renourishment planned for this winter that may remove this problem for a period of time. This season we will make sure that the house is clean and that the various issues have been addressed. We do feel that the extremely low rates we charged this past season were adequate compensation for any problems, and I would like to point out that we had a dozen other renters this past year who were quite happy with the house.
The house was exactly as discribed! But the view from the kitchen window was amazing!!! Every year we stay oceanfront but this house gives new meaning to that! My kids loved the house and cried because they did not want to leave! We all had a great time! The price was great and so was the house!! Clean, Nice, and Comfy!! The only thing that was difficult was the sand bags. I took my grandma and handicap cousin with me and it was hard getting them up and down. And at high tide the kids was waiting to get on the beach, but you can use the public access which is not far away. But I was told about the sand bags before I booked, so it was not a shock. This is a great place to stay and I would recommend this house to everyone. Mike and Gordon are great! I am very thankful that I was able to rent this house and hope the weather cooperates and I can rent it again! Thanks guys, Shawnda

Our family thoroughly enjoyed this vacation. We had never stayed at this beach house, but will definitely stay again. The only problem was the beach at high tide. That was very disappointing because high tide is right smack in the middle of the day when we wanted to be sitting on the beach. We tried to make the best of it by sitting on the deck, but it was disappointing. We were warned ahead of time about this, but didn't think it was quite this bad. Loved the house...it was comfortable, homey, clean, and had everything you could need. Best part was the price. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay, then this is the place!!

Rustic and wonderful
Rustic and wonderful
This tree house is rustic for sure. But it has all the essentials anyone would need to be comfortable and have a wonderful beach experience. The house is directly on the water. The deck has an amazing view of dolphins and fishing boats and people playing in the ocean. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you are looking for a quiet, less crowded area of a gorgeous beach with all the basics, then this is the place for you...if you are looking for luxury, pristine, big screen tvs and a place that you can prepare a gourmet meal...you should probably keep looking. We loved it for it's simplicity! Thanks Mike & Gordon!
