Gualala house description
The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.
Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.
Our home is surrounded by gardens with a blue water view out to the ocean from the kitchen and the sunroom. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy breakfast cooked on a beautiful vintage gas range and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!
The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and ocean view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.
The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.
The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.
A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

Great property, weird garbage rules
Great property, weird garbage rules
We chose this property for our New Years celebration and were pleased with our experience. There was plenty of room for two couples and a great kitchen for cooking and socializing -- exactly what we wanted! It's truly a "hideaway" property: accessible at the end of a long dirt road up in the hills, just past the town Gualala. It's a great setting to disconnect and unwind. There's a tiny view of the ocean from the kitchen and front porch, which made for splendid sunset watching. And, of course, you can't beat the hot tub! Our only complaint was the garbage policy: All garbage and recycling has to be carried out by the renters at the end of the stay. After three nights and lots of holiday feasting, a pile of garbage bags and recycling in the back of the car was a pretty unsavory way to end our stay. Yuck.

The Sea Hideaway in Gualala is a hidden gem! The home is situated on a peaceful hilltop overlooking the beautiful north coast, convenient to Gualala, Point Arena, and Sea Ranch. The property is in great shape, with a well-appointed kitchen and spacious living areas. The gardens on the property are beautifully arranged with winding paths. Both bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and can easily accommodate a family of four comfortably. The side deck has a large hot tub that worked great the first few nights, but didn't heat up as well in subsequent nights (although that may have been due to operator error). The views of the night sky were astonishing, including the Milky Way visible from horizon to horizon. The outdoor shower on the back deck outside the bathroom is a special treat. The croquet set provided hours of fun! Note that the gravel/dirt road leading up to the house (Collins Landing Road) is narrow and steep at points. Be careful of steep ditches on the sides. Our only suggestion concerns garbage disposal. The instructions with the house indicated that renters need to dispose of trash and recycling themselves. There is a recycling station in Gualala on Hwy 1, but we could not find anywhere to dispose of trash. We would recommend that the owners work with the property management company to provide for trash pick-up. Bottom line: we loved our time at the Sea Hideaway and strongly recommend it to anyone seeking a relaxing getaway in one of the most beautiful and hospitable locations on the Northern California coast!

My wife and I spent one of our most rexlaxing vacations at this house. It has all the amenities one needs and the location is just spectacular. The hot tub, outdoor shower are just one of the many things that we loved at this place. I would highly recommend this house for anyone who is interested in chilling out.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary. The house is wonderful! It is so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed sitting in the gardens and listening to waves crash and sea lions bark! We are already planning our next trip back!

About the owner: We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.
Why the Owner Chose Gualala:
This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of cullture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temp's.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the Ocean view.
