Fancy Gap cabin description
There are no next door neighbors at Lazy Bear's Rest. All you'll see from the deck is the view. Situated at the edge of 25 acres certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, Lazy Bear's Rest is the perfect romantic getaway for 2 in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sightings of deer, wild turkeys, or even a bear or bobcat are possible.
The experience begins on the deck of this 900 square foot luxury accommodation. Enjoy the long range view of the Piedmont, Sauratown Mountain and Hanging Rock.
Once inside you'll be swept away by the interior. The living area includes a plasma screen tv hooked to a home theater system, DVD, and CD player, gas log fireplace, full kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, ice maker, and everything you need to cook that special meal or cook on the gas grill on the deck.
The spacious bath is decorated in the Art Deco style. The bedroom, also done in Art Deco, has a queen size bed. In the closet you will find two fluffy robes to use after enjoying the sauna or hot tub, both located on the deck. In the evenings you can snuggle around the outdoor firepit.
For the outdoor enthusiasts, there is plenty of hiking. One of our favorites is the Cascade Trail. You wade two brisk mountain streams and hike past beautiful waterfalls on this 4 mile trek.
A short hike from the cabin will get you to Lazy Bear's private spots for getting away from it all. Steps to the deck overlooking the spring pond make it easily accessible. Take a thermos with coffee and watch the sunrise from 'The Rock' at Lazy Bear Vineyard. Keep walking past Lazy Bear's Vineyard to access the short wooded path to Lazy Bear's private waterfall. There's a picnic table there, so you can pack a lunch or bring a book and listen to the water as it flows to the bottom of the mountain.
If you want to explore beyond Lazy Bear's neighborhood, we are convenient to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt Airy, NC (Mayberry USA), New River Trail, Mabry Mill, Devil's Den Nature Preserve, Historic Hillsville, Olde Mill Golf Course, Blue Ridge Music Center, Applewood Music Center (Cana, VA), Rex Theater, Levering Orchard (seasonal outdoor theater), Chateau Morrisette, and many more area attractions. Special events nearby include Floydfest, Galax Fiddlers' Convention, Autumn Leaf Festival (Mt Airy) and the Hillsville Flea Market. Numerous antique shops are within easy driving distance in Mt Airy and Galax. You can enjoy wine tasting at Villa Appalaccia (music events in the warm months), Shelton Vineyards, West Wind Winery (music events in the warm months), and Old North State Winery.
No pets are allowed on the property, so please make arrangements for your furry and feathered friends prior to your arrival.
All couples over 21 are welcome.

What a perfect hide away for an intimate weekend. So comfortable and well appointed, you will want for nothing! Gorgeous views all the way around. It was one of the best weekends of my life! Relaxing to the nth degree. Plenty to do in the area if you choose, however the cabin in so charming, you won't want to leave it. A perfect place to create perfect memories!

We Love it Here!
We Love it Here!
We have stayed at Lazy Bear at least once a year since it opened in 2004. We always have a great time. The property is clean and well maintained, the scenery is gorgeous, and the owners are always helpful. There's a lot to see and do in the area, both outdoors and in. The Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby and we enjoy that drive. We usually eat Saturday lunch at the Deli near the Parkway, but this time we took their advice and went to Cafe Saturday at West Wind Farm Winery. Delightful. Great music, food, and of course, wine. We were hoping to see some snow, but it didn't materialize. Will have to come back for that.

Owner response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to your next visit!
Lovely cabin located on a down slope in the Blue Ridge. Beautiful sunrises. Fully equipped kitchen. Large bathroom with a glass pane door directly in front of the toilet & SHEER curtain. Not at all private! And a pocket door which is loud enough to wake your partner in the middle of the night. Plenty of thick, luxurious towels are provided. But not so with the bed linens. The bed was made with flannel sheets (maybe for the winter?) and since the water is very hard, so were they. The mattress is also on the hard side. We shopped and bought our own sheets and blankets. The hot tub jets were not performing properly while we were there but the contrasting hot water and cold mountain air were refreshing all the same. The sauna was nice as well. I would highly recommend anyone stay here except not in the colder months. We stayed a few days before Thanksgiving and had to rush out due to an oncoming ice storm on Wednesday morning. The road, and there is only 1 road leading to the cabin, is one lane in both directions and no turnarounds for oncoming vehicles. So someone has to back up on this very narrow and steep road. When leaving we had to go uphill with ice building up on that road. No cell service (Verizon Wireless) so if you slide off and survive the crash, you can't call for help. So as much as we liked the cabin, we can't encourage going there in the colder months. It was scary! I think we were lucky to be going up that hill rather than down that day! The storm had started the previous day with heavy rains so we relaxed watching the TV (not HD) and fireplace with no phone interruptions. Now that's a vacation! But the wind that night kept us up as it came through the bedroom floor making a horribly loud sound. And it was cold! That floor, as nice as it is, needs carpet for the winter months. Our GPS got us to the cabin without a problem but it took us to no man's land while trying to find a grocery store. No directions are offered in the cabin. So GPS sent us to Apache Trail which is a 1 lane dirt road leading to private homes. It does not go out to Rt. 52 as GPS thinks(So bring your own groceries.) The roads are so narrow and steep that we opted to stay in at night since there are areas where it actually disappears from under the front of your car while you are driving. You will become familiar with those nuances quickly however. Overall it was a lovely cabin and we enjoyed our stay. But not in the winter.

Owner response: Wow! I am so sorry that Lazy Bear's Rest was not a good fit for you. I can't do much about the weather... I'm just going to say that I can assure people considering our property that the wind does not blow through the floor. We do remind all our guests when we send directions that they should not use GPS. My husband did reinforce that when he came to help you turn on the tv and you asked where a grocery store is located. I hope you received the two pairs of slacks that you forgot and that we mailed back to you as you requested.
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at Lazy Bear's Rest. The place is exactly as described, and the views are breathtaking. The area is very peaceful and serene- we would love to visit again in the future. We loved the teepee and the little waterfall. The deli on Route 52 also had great food !

Owner response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay and that you went to the waterfall. One of our favorite places! Very quiet and it's so relaxing to listen to the water. Hope you get to come back sometime!
Even though the weather didn't quite cooperate (fog and fog and more fog!) the view was spectacular when the sun broke through. We had a great time exploring the property and exploring down to the falls. Unfortunately we didn't see any bears, but we did see some turkey, groundhogs, and rabbits galore. We ate lunch at the nearby deli (on Rt. 52) and poked around the antique stores. We had a lovely time. We called Winston and Carol to let them know that their dishwasher was on the fritz, and Winston showed up himself to take a look and make sure that we weren't terribly inconvenienced (we weren't!).

Owner response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Sometimes no cell service can be a good thing. One of the coolest spots around is under the trees at Lazy Bear's fire pit. It's great you could enjoy it, even in the summer. Hope you'll come back again sometime.
Great Getaway location
Great Getaway location
We booked the Lazy Bear Rest at the last minute and found the owners to be very prompt in helping us firm up details. The cabin has been described accurately in other reviews. It is well appointed, very comfortable, and in a lovely location. There were a few small mechanical glitches when we arrived but they were quickly handled and all was well. Carol and Winston are very hospitable and obviously enjoy sharing their lovely cabin with others. Great folks. We visit different locations but would definitely return.

Owner response: Our mountain thunder storms can be amazing to watch! Sometimes, however, they upset things electric. We experienced one of those storms the night before your arrival. I am glad we were able to resolve everything quickly so you could enjoy your stay. We had made arrangements to relocate you to another wonderful cabin 1/2 mile away if it hadn't worked out. By the way, there have been more bear sightings in the area!
Lazy Bear's Rest was everything my wife and I could of hoped for and more. The breathtaking views were spectacular and the cabin was cozy and relaxing. This was the perfect place for our romantic escape! The owners have done a fantastic job of making you feel right at home with all of the amenities available. We would highly recommend this location to any couple looking for a place to relax and get away from reality for a little while.

We had a lovely weekend celebrating our 20th anniversary at Lazy Bear. This is a very quiet and relaxing place. The house was very clean and as described. If you are looking for a nice getaway, you will enjoy this tranquil place. The reserve is very nice as well - be prepared to work your calves coming back up the mountain:) We hope to come back in the future!

Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed the quiet and tranquility at Lazy Bear's Rest. We agree that the views from Lazy Bear's "playground" are outstanding. Shortly after your departure we saw a mama bear and two tiny cubs near the tree line ! We hope you come back soon .

About the owner: We've been enjoying Fancy Gap since 1999 when we purchased our property. Having lived here full time since 2003, we can't say enough about Fancy Gap and the surrounding area. Personally, we enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of Fancy Gap Mountain. The views are spectacular and, on a clear evening, we can see all the way to the lights of High Point, NC! Our interests lie outdoors - whether it's hiking, riding our ATVs, harvesting our grapes, or sitting on 'The Rock' looking out over the Piedmont. It's all here - come see for yourself.
Why the Owner Chose Fancy Gap:
We live on the mountain and built Lazy Bear's rest in 2004. Our goal was to create a place for two people to get away from it all and enjoy each other's company. It's worked. We've had two weddings on the property. It's not unusual to hear that our guests are honeymooning or celebrating an anniversary.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The Art Deco theme of the interior is not often seen in the mountains - we've collected many of the pieces ourselves over the past 20 years. When you're outside, you can walk to our private waterfall, Lazy Bear's Rock, or take a peek inside our authentic Sioux tipi. Feel free to inspect the vineyard and ask for a sample of Lazy Bear's vintages. Sit by our little spring pond and listen to the birds. Meditate on the medicine wheel. It's all here for our guests to enjoy.
