We spent our honeymoon at Casa Mariposa and it was absolutely perfect! The house is obviously beautiful, but is also extremely comfortable and convenient. The pool is awesome as we spent most of our time in the pool looking out over the ocean. The beach was just a quick drive down the hill by truck, and under a five minute walk. Playa el Coco is beautiful; it's clean, peaceful, and was always empty. We rented a four-wheel drive truck for the week that we were there. Four-wheel drive wasn't necessarily needed, but it was nice to have. The road to the house is quite bumpy and we crossed a few rivers. It's approximately a 35 minute drive to the house but the scenery is well worth the drive. There is a little local store, and two restaurants with bars located at Coco so it was perfect when we ran out of rum and Coke or didn't feel like cooking. We also drove to the little town south of Coco, Ostional, to buy fresh lobster tails. This is the perfect house if you want to feel away from everything and enjoy a peaceful vacation. There is a housekeeper on-site and he is AMAZING. He came in everyday to clean the house and was always available when we needed him or needed something. He also grilled our lobster tails for us. The owners were also very helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this vacation home, and we are dreaming of our next vacation to Casa Mariposa with family and friends.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: Owner Response #1755541 "AMAZING" We are very gratified that our guests had such an enjoyable honeymoon. We are particularly thrilled with their high compliment of our housekeeper. He has been with us for nearly six years and is consistently doing his job to perfection. Our goal has been to create an environment where our clients can relax in comfort in what we believe are the most beautiful surroundings in the world and he makes a large contribution to that end. The perfect house that our guests were enjoying is the result of a year of renovation. From the stone walls in the bathrooms, to the custom made sink stands, to the amazing stone infinity pool wall, everything is not only beautiful, but beautifully functional. There is custom made furniture for indoor/outdoor living. The beach really is magnificent. A photograph of it is used on a poster depicting the ideal beach. It is also swimming friendly.... the sand gradually inclines into clear water. For privacy, it can’t be beat. It is almost a half mile long beach of soft white sand...most of the time with no one on it. We are also pleased that our guests enjoyed our pool which has a commanding view of the Pacific. The water in the pool is crystal clear. It is fully tiled in various shades of blue. The steps leading into the pool are decorated with artfully rendered mosaics of the local marine life. There is really nothing like floating in the water under a clear blue sky, looking up at the palms or out at the towering distant mountains feeling like you are floating on the vast Pacific Ocean! Transporting indeed...even more so sipping a mojito prepared by our housekeeper and bursting with the flavors of local mint and rum!

February 23, 2012 We had a wonderful stay that ended much too soon. The breathtaking view, the tranquility and the whole house with so many precious details were a welcome contrast to our days in hectic and noisy Managua. With Freddis you have found the near perfect housekeeper who is always willing to help. He prepared a tasty fish meal for us on the open fireplace. Hope to be here another year. Not the Luxury that we Expected

Luxury. A simple word used by the property owners to describe the experience. A simple word that raised our expectations about what we would find at the home. It is from this perspective that we share these insights: Upon our arrival, we met the local property manager. He was either checking up on or installing an additional refrigerator because the home's kitchen fridge was not working. It was clear at that time that this fridge was very noisy, but there were no alternatives; loud fridge or no cold food. We were pleased that the situation was addressed before we arrived. Not until the property manager left was it obvious that the noise of the new fridge was so loud that it blocked out the ocean sounds. The home was advertised as air conditioned. However, upon reading the welcome notes we found that the a/c units must be set at 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) or higher. That's pretty warm. We were a group of four adults. We intended to spend time around the pool. To do so, some pool chairs were required. There were only 2 rotting lounges at the pool (not 6 shown in the pictures). Additionally, the beautiful hammock pictured on the homeaway site was not there. Outside Jacuzzi: According to housekeeper, it will work for about 4 minutes, so we did not attempt to turn in on. Kitchen: The property manager suggested that we don't use the dishwasher as it doesn't rinse the soap off the plates. Clothes Washer: Not sure if there is a problem with the washer or the way it is designed, but water needs to be added "by hand." Not a big deal since the housekeeper volunteered to run a few loads for us. The refrigerator, lounge chairs, and hammock issues were addressed by the property owners a few days after we sent them an email explaining the situation. We didn't mind the delay as time moves slower in Nicaragua. Our concern is that the home we experienced was quite different than the home as described on homeaway. It is unlikely that we would recommend this home to others. If our review does not dissuade you then make sure that the home and the description are one and the same. Playa el Coco is a great beach, it was deserted while we were there; there are 2 restaurants on the beach and a little shop nearby. Do your shopping in San Juan del Sur. The house is a 5 minute walk to the beach; beware, the walk back is up a steep hill. If you are old or out-of-shape you might prefer to take your car down to the beach.Owner response: To quote Paul Simon...One man's ceiling is another man's floor. We've had our property for six years and our reviews have been stellar. Many of our guests have returned over and over. It is a luxury property not only by our definition but by our many guests' definition as well. They include industrialists, television producers, government ministers, ambassadors, and tourists looking to stay at a wonderful place with fantastic service. This guest had multiple issues largely emanating from how the mineral content of the water has affected the Sears appliances we had shipped from America. He is the only guest ever to do so. It is a non issue really as we have a full time caretaker who lives in the casita behind the house and cleans impeccably daily in addition to washing guests' clothes and dishes. He is also a wonderful cook and bartender! We have an American made three filter and ultraviolet light water purification system which purifies the drinking water. It's true, our house is on a hill over looking the beach, one hundred and eighty-feet above sea level. The location affords an an unobstructed 180 degree view, of the Pacific Ocean. Whales, dolphins and rays sometimes included. According to both the guest and our long time manager who arrived on the premises, the concerns were addressed "immediately".

We spent two weeks at Casa Mariposa in February 2012. There were two families of four and the house provided plenty of space. The view and setting are AMAZING! The house is located on the top of a small hill and the walk to the beach takes only a few minutes. We had a great time playing in the pool, which was quite large for a single family home. The pool deck was in the sun all day, but the outside sitting area provided shade if it was needed. The beach was beautiful and rarely had more than five people on it. The waves were gentle and the kids (ages 9 and 6) had no problems wading out as there were no rocks. Freddis, the caretaker, was a true gem. He worked so hard, even when no one was looking. He was a great cook and was very patient with us when we tried to speak Spanish to him (he does not speak much English). The house is about 45 minutes from San Juan Del Sur so we were not able to do many day trips to other areas. Because of this we had some great adventures near by and did more relaxing than we would have done otherwise. There was a small store at the base of the hill which provided most of what we needed. The kitchen of the house was perfect for eating in for most meals. The owners were VERY helpful when we were planning our trip and were always quick to respond to any questions. All in all Casa Mariposa provided an unforgettable vacation for both families and enough memories to last a lifetime.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/5

Our family of five really relaxed at this lovely home and infinity pool perched above a beautiful and quiet beach. The enclave of Playa el Coco is serene, friendly and setoff down a rugged road from the touristy crowded town of San Juan del Sur. We loved it here. Jeanne's care and exceptional decorating made this home and pool an easy and relaxing place to be. It is beautiful with wonderful touches. Our agenda was reading, swimming and enjoying time together as a family - - this was perfect. Our big excitement the week we were there was a scheduled lengthy family horseback ride and a baby turtle release on the beach. The owners and housekeeper made it an easy and enjoyable process from inquiry to leave taking. We heartily recommend this property.Owner response: We are delighted that you and your family enjoyed yourselves at Casa Mariposa. It is indeed a tranquil piece of heaven on earth! We are always thrilled at the baby turtle releases on Playa el Coco. To see them rush madly to the sea minutes after birth is phenomenally moving.....Also, so happy you were able to experience horseback riding on our beautiful beach and the bucolic surroundings. It is one of my favorite things to do when we are there especially with our daughters who love to ride horses!

Let me be clear: casa mariposa is great. Our stay was both relaxing and invigorating. I highly recommend it. We spent hours lounging on the pool's floating toys, reading in the sun and enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean. We watched movies on the digital cable. We cooked in the kitchen, which provided all necessary amenities. We walked down the hill (under the swinging branches of trees filled with howler monkeys) to coco beach to enjoy a drink and swim (perfect waves!). We also visited the beach 5km south at night to see thousands of large turtles laying eggs - an unforgettable experience. The house was exceptionally clean, except for the occasional visit from a moth the size of a bird - this surprise made our stay all the better! Our only regret is that we didn't have more time to enjoy casa mariposa.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: The howler monkeys in the trees are indeed a wonderful sight! We tend to get excited about all of the wildlife surrounding us. Parakeets, hummingbirds, pelicans, whales, dolphins, hawks, have all been sighted. Our house was named for the multitude of butterfly species that abound. For a while we had an Anteater visiting! Fantastic. The beach is remarkable. Not only is it beautiful but it is also a great for swimming. The slow incline into the ocean makes it perfect for everyone to enjoy. As for the turtles on the adjacent beach. We are told that each year nearly 60,000 of them come to lay their eggs. One of the few spots in the world where such things can be observed! While you probably walked over to see them, horse tours can be arranged. Several of our guests have gone on trail rides along the beach and into the hills and reported back that they enjoyed themselves very much. We are so glad that you were able to watch movies. Our cable tv offers a multitude of channels our guests are often delighted to find. As for the kitchen, we designed it for ease of use and purposely kept it open so while cooking one is able to see the pool and the ocean beyond.
