By day, watch the ferries ply the Aegean and by night watch the sunset from the terraces of this architect designed stone villa, all in absolute peace and privacy. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, you never have to leave the pool. If you are looking for activity, then Andros thirty beaches and spectacular scenery and museums will keep you busy.
Location
Filakari is an old shepherd’s house which has been renovated and extended into a private hillside hideaway with breathtaking views over the islands of the Aegean, spectacular sunsets and every modern convenience to ensure a stress free escape from modern urban life. The house is approached by a long private drive through herb laden natural hillside where sheep and goats still roam. Filakari’s own gardens offer total privacy and have been designed by one of Greece’s foremost landscape architects. The gardens were featured on the Mediterranean Garden Society tour of last year and take advantage of natural rock formations, allowing the house and its swimming pool to blend undetected into their surroundings.
Andros
The house is situated on Andros, one of the most traditional and unspoilt Greek islands often described as beautiful, modest and discrete. It is a two hour ferry ride from Athens and known for its cultural life, shipping history, authentic food and outstanding natural flora and fauna. Filakari’s location allows easy access from Athens International Airport. Ferries to Andros leave from Rafina, twenty minutes by taxi or bus from the airport. Once on Andros, the house is 20 minutes from the ferry port, the museums of Hora are 25 minutes away and there is easy access to Andros’s 30 beaches. The closest taverna is within walking distance and shopping is in the town of Batsi, within a ten minutes drive.
The House
Filakari is architect designed to combine traditional island elements with modern minimal interiors and provides a sophisticated backdrop to the owner’s collection of contemporary Greek art and ceramics. The house’s two levels each have dining and entertaining areas and allow a change of pace and scenery during the day. Both areas enjoy spectacular views over the Aegean all day and at sunset. A large pool located on the lower level allows for easy entertaining when not exploring the islands over thirty beaches.
Main level
The main level of the house includes a large living and dining room, modern kitchen, a study and TV room all of which overlook the sea. Bedrooms on this level include the master bedroom with sea views. A further double bedroom with sea view and a second double bedroom with garden views share a private terrace. All have separate entrances to the gardens, air conditioning and en suite shower rooms.
Pool level
The lower level of the house has a very private double bedroom with ensuite bathroom and air conditioning at poolside. The bedroom is entered by a gazebo with dining table overlooking the pool and sea. This level also has a barbeque installation with minibar, sink and cupboards to make daytime poolside dining easy.
The property is maintained to the highest level of cleanliness and organisation with maid service twice per week, overseen by an English speaking couple. It enjoys full wi fi coverage and internet access for professionals who need to stay in touch.
Its stone terraces on multiple levels means that young children will need close supervision. The natural hillsides in which the house is positioned become dry in the summer so smoking presents a danger to the environment. Non smokers only.

We had a very relaxing week at Filakari. Your home is very comfortable and absolutely lovely. There were six of us and the size was just right. We had plenty of space to come together, and just the right amount of separation between spaces if we wanted to have time to relax alone with a book. We also had a perfect balance of time at beaches, tavernas, exploring the island and time at the house. We prepared most dinners at home which made for wonderfully relaxing evenings. Your kitchen was well equipped and cooking with the local ingredients was such a pleasure. You considered everything we would need. Your notes about the house and garden, recommendations for tavernas and beaches were all wonderful introductions to Andros. Having J&P meet us and escort us to the house was extremely helpful. They were wonderful and having local knowledge was a huge part of our enjoyment of Andros. Thank you for thinking about such details. One of the reasons I selected your home for our vacation was its architectural appeal. The photographs on the web site were very good and gave me a good idea of the house. I must say it was even better than I anticipated. I am an architect, as is our friend who traveled with us, and we thoroughly enjoyed the materials and the details of the architecture and the landscape design. They are beautifully integrated into the natural setting of the mountainside and borrow nicely from the traditional Andros architecture. Our time at your home and on Andros was perfect and I hope to return someday, perhaps in spring.Owner response: Our guest's comments were very particularly appreciated because they recognize the care which we put into the architectural design of the house. We worked with a local architect to achieve a house which was thoroughly liveable but achieved the aesthetic of Andros specific design at the same time. Authentic Andros architecture falls into two broad categories - neoclassical white buildings with red ceramic roofs, found in the south of the island, and low stone rectangular buldings of the central and north of the island. Stone house building fell out of favour due to its complexity and expense but we were fortunate to find a team of mastercraftsmen who built our house using the old stone from farm buildings which were on the site and stone from the surrounding fields. This allows the building to nestle almost undetected on the side of the hill.

This was our first experience on Andros. We stayed two weeks with our 3 children (17-22) and their friends. In the mornings we would have breakfast together outside overlooking the Aegean sea. Some retreated to the pool to read or swim, while others used the rented jeeps/quads to explore the island. Everyone was back at the house for drinks before dinner on the terrace with stunning sunsets or dinner in one of the many tavernas on the island. The house feels like home - comfortable and with attention to detail. A charming English/Greek couple assisted us with any queries we had (help with car rental, location of beaches and restaurants, etc). We recommend this house to anyone who wants to unwind and relax. Compared to many other Greek islands, Andros is relatively green and is easy to reach by ferry from Raffina (under 2 hours). The family has made it clear that it wants to come back to Filikari next year.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: Our home is designed as a relaxing get away for those with high stress and busy lives. Drinks on the terrace while the sun sets over the Aegean is one way to truly distance yourselves from the other world. Another is to swim at a different beach every day or visit local tavernas which maintain their authentic Greek cuisine, making the island a foodie paradise. At the same time, we devoted great effort to ensure that the house is true to a Greek island architectural context while being clean, contemporary and hassle free. It is the first time that we have rented our house and are delighted that our guests have appreciated our efforts.

Why the Owner Chose Aprovato:
We lead demanding professional lives in a large international city. Andros is a unique environment in which to unwind - wonderful weather, swimming at a multitude of beaches and eating authentic Greek cuisine. It is off the tourist trail and uncrowded even in August. We had visited the island for over twenty years before finding the right house to buy to satisfy our wish for a private location, fantastic sunset views and ability to watch the ferry boats come and go from the island. For a change of pace, we take the ferry to Mykonos (one and a half hours) or Athens (two hours).
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
One of the most amazing views in the world surrounded by hillsides which have not changed for hundreds of years. Authentic Greece at its best.
