Review for our stay at the Ft Loudon Cottage
Review for our stay at the Ft Loudon Cottage
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Gatehouse. Everything was as it was described. We had everything we needed and the property was very clean and well maintained. I would recommend this property to any of my friends and family. We enjoyed having our first evening meal at the Milky Way which is famous for their delicious food. It was a very relaxing time and would love to come again sometime.

A week in Fort Louden
A week in Fort Louden
We found this to be the perfect place to stay for the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. It is far enough away to avoid the crowds and traffic but close enough to be at the battlefield in less than an hour. There in mid-summer, we missed the sking but did check out the lake and beautiful beach. The house was perfect for the four of us in every way. We sat on the porch and enjoyed the end of each day before cooking dinner in the kitchen or on the propane grill in the yard. After dinner we enjoyed the fire ring in the back yard before returning to the kitchen to play cards. The beds were comfortable and good for a family but one more double would be better for couples. It was a pleasure to meet the Martins who came by to see us and be sure that we had everything we needed. All in all, a great place and we will surely stay there when we are in the area again

We came to Gettysburg, PA for the 150th anniversary since my husband was part of the battle recreations. This quiet little site was the perfect choice. Although it was a little bit of a drive to the battlefields, it was a beautiful drive through the Pennsylvania countryside, straight down highway 30. After long crowded days in the National Park and Gettysburg, it was so nice to return to our quiet gatehouse to unwind and relax. Nestled in the trees, the cottage was very comfortable and private. The cottage was absolutely spotless and cutely decorated. The Matins leave plenty of information available regarding local attractions and restaurants. The gatehouse is not a large place but we had plenty of room. The master bedroom is upstairs and was very roomy. There was a nice little bathroom upstairs which was very convenient. Just realize if you are bringing a full house of guests, somebody will be staying in the bedroom adjacent to your room, cutting down on the privacy. The other beds are downstairs, a futon and a fold out couch. We spent our morning sitting on the front porch drinking coffee and our evenings reading and talking. There is no tv or cable available. They provide wifi but the signal was not strong enough to be able to use our laptop. It forced us to unplug which was a nice side effect. Having laundry facilities on premises was an added bonus. There are stores a couple of miles away and plenty of places to get something to eat or shop in nearby Chambersburg. The Martins provide plenty of towels and linens and try to leave things you might need. They were very gracious hosts and worked with us as we were driving twenty hours to Pennsylvania and not sure of our arrival time. Even though they were not on site while we were there, they quickly responded to any questions we had via texts and phone calls. I would highly recommend the gatehouse for a country getaway.

Owner response: Thank you for the thorough and kind review. Your insights will help potential guests know a little more about our cottage.
The owner contacted us prior to our vacation to let us know they would not be there on site when we arrived. We didn't think much of this. We read the documents sent to us via email. There was a nice list including directions and area attractions as well as local grocery stores and such. This was very helpful. We arrived at the home and we were not greeted. This was not a huge deal though we weren't really sure what we were supposed to do. We weren't told to check in anywhere. We turned the door knob and the door was unlocked. We went in and found little "Check In" and "Check Out" cards on the table. On the 3rd day there we were greeted by the owners. They were very sweet and did ask if we needed anything. At this point they also provided us with Internet access. This home was very well maintained, warm and comfortable. There were lots of little extra's and the owners were very thoughtful. The decor was very inviting and relaxing. The lack of cable television was a big plus! It was nice to peel the kids away from the normal daily routine. There was a portable television with family DVD's in the closet, though the games were a very big hit with our entire family. It was great to have several different entertainment options right at the house. There was a nice fire pit in the back yard with all of the necessary items to enjoy a fire. There was plenty of firewood and supplies to start the fire with. There were also two barbeque grills available for use. Every little detail was worked out effortlessly. There was a fully equipped laundry room complete with supplies. The only downside to this home was the kitchen. It was really tiny. The table only seated four individuals so this didn't work well for our family of six. There were also only four chairs. I think it would be a nice addition to have a few more chairs available. It would have been nice to have dinner all together. Due to the tight space, meals were quite chaotic. It was rather difficult moving around the kitchen while cooking and cleaning as the space is so tiny. I would really say that this house accomodates four people comfortably and is quite a tight squeeze for a family of six. Overall, we did enjoy our stay and we thought the owners were extremely thoughtful.

Owner response: Thank you so much for your suggestions and review. Though we can't address the kitchen size, we've made extra chairs available (located in the laundry room) and suited the kitchen with an expandable table. This should serve our guests with families of 6 better. Thank you for choosing The Gatehouse at Loudon Forge.
Our family of 5 stayed at the Gatehouse in June and had a wonderful experience. The owners were very thoughtful and wonderful hosts. The cabin was clean and very well maintained. The place looks just like it's pictured on the site: warm and inviting. It is in such a wonderful relaxing setting. If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing place - this it. After having spent several days in D.C. sightseeing it was a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the city for us. We loved Cowen's Gap State Park. If you're looking for more to see and do; it was only a little over an hour for us to drive to Gettysburg, spend the day and then come back. A two thumbs up!

The cabin was well taken care of and maintained. It was nice to have washing facilities on site. My only complaint was that the kitchen was not well equipped. The cabin slept 6, but there were no frying pans or pots that could accommodate meals for that number yet there were 2 crockpots, something we never use. Everything had to be done in small batches. We came stocked with cookbooks and expected to do a lot of cooking with local produce and were not able to due to the kitchen facilities. That aspect was very disappointing. Other than that, the owners were very nice and the place was clean and comfortable.

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to review the cottage. We regret that the kitchen was not equipped well enough for you and appreciate the list of necessary items that you provided. We will continue to add to kitchen supplies to make it useful to our "Chef" guests. We want everyroom in The Gatehouse to be hassle-free and a blessing! Again, thank you for choosing us.

Our sincere thanks to James & Kelli. We had a wonderful stay. Although we rented the house to avoid hurricane in New York and we were not in a vacation spirit, yet there are so many activities around the area that we completely forgot about the hurricane and had a wonderful weekend. The owners are very welcoming and house is a "Perfect Cottage" with lots of history. Nestled in the woods with huge game room, the kids had a lot of fun and we had a wonderful stay.

Simply Charming & Fantastic!
Simply Charming & Fantastic!
Just got back from our week's stay at the Gatehouse and we already miss it! We drove up to a lit up house late Saturday night with soft and relaxing piano music playing from inside. Loved that "we will leave the light on for you" feeling we got after a long drive from FL. We walked in to a sparkly clean house and a basket of treats and felt instantly at home! What a delightful time and beautiful yet kid friendly house. We were sad to leave. It was perfect for our family (me, hubby plus three boys). Loved NOT having TV! But a bonus that we did have WiFi to plan our many day trips! We had fun traveling to Amish country, & Gettysburg, sight seeing to see two covered bridges in Franklin County, exploring fun local diners, running around at Cowan SP (although swimming was closed the day we went the park and the drive was lovely) we loved chocolate world at Hershey- we just did the free tour and decorated cupcakes and it was a blast and still affordable. We also enjoyed seeing Chambersburg, DC and so much more! All we needed was more time! Although we didn't get to see the Martin's til our last day (we were daytrippin' a lot) they made our stay great! Having laundry was wonderful with three boys! The kids also loved the creek and running barefoot in the grass! We loved just driving up the mountain and getting ice cream cones at the Twist and Shake and then coming back to the rental and playing Red Light Green Light on the lawn. It was a wonderful place and we fell in love with the area! There is so much to do in the area! It was also great to be able to save money and cook from the kitchen and have family suppers and breakfasts! However the Milky Way diner was a blast from the past and yummy. We also took advantage of the farmers markets roadside to eat lots of fresh and delicious produce all week long! Take time to go to the creamery in Chambersburg for some truly good ice cream and milk! Trickling Springs Creamery. Hubby and I truly enjoyed the cool evenings and being able to kick back, light some porch candles and sit outside and chat after the kids went to bed, too! We really enjoyed a nice family campfire our last night with the yummy s'mores kit provided! We loved the history of the area. Highly recommend doing the auto tour at Gettysburg, so good! We hope to return sooner rather than later! Thank you Martin Family for everything and for the wonderful, relaxing, charming stay! We will always remember PA and how wonderful it was to us.
