Property description

Experience Morelia, the “Aristocrat of Colonial Cities,” from the privacy of an historic antique home in the Centro Histórico. Just behind the massive wooden entry doors is a place of peace, imagination, comfort and simple luxury. Cuarenta y Ocho is the rebirth of a 17th-century stone house in the heart of this extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house, which has just undergone a complete three-year restoration, guarantees a special guest experience with fresh, modern design ideas.

This privately owned house conceived and professionally decorated by Wisecracker Design is offered as an exclusive vacation rental in Morelia to those seeking privacy, unstructured days and independent adventures in travel. This is not your typical B&B or hotel experience but an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, color and richness of this undiscovered colonial Mexican city. Cuarenta y Ocho, like Morelia itself, is a special small secret.

The restoration of Cuarenta y Ocho, a 17th-century house, was a collaboration between Wisecracker Design and Francisco Bribiesca, an accomplished local architect known for his sensitive renovations of churches and other antique buildings. We wanted to remain respectful of the local architecture and details while bringing the building into the 21st century and making it a place where we could recognize our personal tastes and showcase our ideas as international interior designers. Offering guests a place of comfort and style was paramount. It is in this spirit that the whole house has a chalky monochromatic palette with an occasional shot of saturated color. Large windows, doors, skylights and a center patio fill the house with natural light and fresh air. The lines between indoors and outdoors are blurred thanks to the openness of the architecture. Furnishings include Wisecracker Design custom-upholstered pieces, and iconic modernist reproductions blended with carefully chosen antiques. Textiles, accessories, artwork and lighting were gathered from travels around the globe. Cuarenta y Ocho is a fusion of classic Mexican colonial bones and modern, elegant details.

Cuarenta y Ocho includes plenty of room for entertaining or relaxing in the elegant sala with an antique fireplace, a small comedor that seats six, and a sparkling new kitchen. The compact and efficient cocina has polished concrete counters, typical handmade pasta tile and modern stainless steel appliances. It is equipped with everything you’ll need to prepare meals at home if you wish.

The master suite is tucked into the far corner of the house to create a quiet and secluded ambience. Light filters in through a discreet skylight, and a contemporary gas fireplace sparkles in the space. The room has a comfortable queen-size platform bed centered on a natural stone wall. A second room doubles as an office/studio and comfortable second bedroom with a queen-size sofa bed.

The master bath is luxurious in its scale, design and amenities. The entire ceiling is glass, which floods the space with light during the day and starlight at night. There is a deep, two-person soaking tub and separate shower. Local stone walls and floors add a rustic authenticity to this spa-like space.

The living room, studio, master bedroom and bathroom are all accessed through tall glass and iron doors that lead to a covered pasillo (walkway). The centerpiece of the house is a traditional patio paved with antique cantera stone. A polished black cement infinity-edge water feature is a modern alternative to the baroque-style fountains found in most colonial houses in Morelia. Casual exterior furniture groupings are there for relaxing. A narrow stone staircase leads to the roof terrace. On the upper terrace is a small bodega housing a half bath and laundry area. The roof patio is covered in local terracotta tile and has spectacular nighttime views of the cathedral and the distant hills of Santa Maria and beyond.

The sum of these elements is a soothing, serene, uncluttered and comfortable home that you may find difficult to leave.

Year Purchased: 2005

About: My partner and I purchased this antique house in Morelia because we love the city and it's European flavor. The house was a ruin when purchased but having restored other colonial houses in Mexico we saw the potential. We worked with a local architect to restore the property. As professional designers the project was very interesting.

Why Morelia:
We love the energy in Morelia, the climate, the architecture and history, the European-style sidewalk cafe scene and most of all it's people.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Staying at our house allows our guests the opportunity to live in an elegant 17th century house and to emerse themselves into a local neighborhood in the Historic Center of Morelia.
