Cute, Comfortable, Cottage Style House on 450 Acres
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Open and accessible all year round. Every season is as beautiful as the next. The houses, barns, corrals and outbuildings are in a cluster at the center of the 450 acre Ranch. The Lake is an easy quarter mile walk from the house. The house has homesteader history too. We believe the kitchen of the Cobblestone House was the original homestead, and the other rooms were added as the family grew.
The Cobblestone is charming, comfortable and ready for a family of 4 or a romantic couples get-away. The house is one level. Each bedroom has a comfy queen sized bed, a dresser and closet space. The house has one full bathroom situated between the two bedrooms. There is also a separate office with desk and chair. Bedding, towels, and pillows are provided. Horses are allowed with prior approval. Pets negotiable.
Please Note: There is a Log Home 50 yards away also available for rental, sleeps 12.
About the Cobblestone House:
The Cobblestone offers a bit of history and a lot of relaxation. Walk anywhere you like on the 450 acre Ranch or just relax, relax, relax. On the Ranch there is a private trout lake, about eleven acres in size, several beaver ponds and three year-round live creeks. The lakes and ponds offer trout fishing to guests and is within easy walking distance for all. If river fishing is what you are after the Stillwater River is only 10 minutes drive, Rosebud Creek the same distance and the Yellowstone River is only 20 minutes drive away. Because of the abundance of water and tree cover this section of land draws wildlife of all kinds. Wildlife is often spotted walking through the Ranch, and photographic opportunities are abound!
Views, Fishing and Wildlife:
At the Ranch there are outdoor activities like walking, sightseeing, photography, swimming or fishing at the private lake. There is a dock with a picnic table if you want to pack a cooler and spend a good long time soaking up the sun and scenery. The Ranch is a short distance to spectacular hiking trails, mountain biking, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, white water rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, the famous Beartooth Highway, Absarokee Days, historic Red Lodge and its annual rodeo and mountain man rendezvous, quaint towns with great gift shops in Absarokee and Fishtail, ATV rentals, wagon tours & sleigh rides, Stillwater Art & Wine Festival, or a day trip into Yellowstone National Park. The route to Yellowstone from the Ranch is breathtakingly beautiful, going over the Beartooth Highway to the Top of the World, then through the historic mining town of Cooke City. The Winter route to Yellowstone is through Lewistown, Montana.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon while hiking in the Beartooths. We both loved the house! So quiet, rustic and comfortable. Everything we needed was provided for us, the washer and dryer was such a bonus on our long trip. We will definitely stay here if we vacation in that area again!Did you find this review helpful? What a peaceful, beautiful, and cozy getaway. The cobblestone house is charming and comfortable; a special feeling to be in the original homestead from the 1800's. The property is serene and breathtaking. It was a wonderful mental break to be able to walk for so long and just enjoy the expanse. We also really enjoyed the property "tour" from Lee and Roxanne and seeing the alternative forms of growing/cultivation they are practicing. It was the perfect place-not an "in-town" B&B, yet close enough to Red Lodge or beautiful hiking spots along the river. Of the three places my husband and I stayed at on our Montana vacation, this was our favorite and would stay here again if visiting the area. Thanks so much to Lee and Roxanne for making our stay truly memorable.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I wish I could have stayed longer . . . The place lends itself to sit back and enjoy the surroundings (quaint barnyard, friendly cats and cute goats) and the scenery. The owners have taken care of every detail and some details are very endearing and make one feel at home immediately. I will return.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This vacation far exceeded my expectations. Roxanne and Lee are wonderful hosts with tours and meeting any needs or accommodations a guest my have. Fishing in the lake was rewarding with incredible trout. Fresh eggs, baby goat and garden vegetables for your picking daily were just some of the fun. The cottage house is most accommodating with a nice balance of modern conveniences and a sense of homesteading a hundred years ago. I'm returning in a few months for run in winter.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were looking for a private, cozy out of the way place to get away from the "day to day". We stayed in the coblestone house. It exceded our expectations! The kitchen was fully stocked with bowls, bakeware, glasses, tea pot, microwave, and even the basic essentials for condiments! (Baking powder, soda, spices etc.) Coffee and tea is also provided. We literally just had to bring our bags and some groceries. There is also a BOSE radio in the kitchen that got a lot of use. The pellet stove in the cozy living room was very relaxing and inviting. The beds were extremely comfortable and clean. The views were breathtaking and there is a lot of history on the property. We walked up to the fishing lake and toured the big red barn. We saw lots of deer and various other wildlife. We look forward to our next stay! Everything was absolutely perfect and Roxanne is a gracious hostess. My friend & I stayed in the Cobblestone in May 2011 and loved every thing about it. We were looking for some quiet time away from our busy every day lives & this was perfect! The owners of the property thought of everything & then some. The kitchen was well stocked with most anything you would need to cook, bake or serve with, even down to the paper towels and foil. The bedding and other furniture were all very comfortable. From the minute we entered the ranch property I felt at peace and at home. There were games, books, DVD movies, pictures & history of the ranch and this original homestead. Roxanne is a great manager & hostess, we couldn't have asked for anything more. The mountain views are breathtaking and we enjoyed seeing the wildlife and so many beautiful birds. I highly recommend the Cobblestone house, you will love it. If you need a larger place, there is a beautiful log home on the property to rent as well.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway.

Our time at the ranch was extremely enjoyable and only wished we could have extend our stay. The time was spent relaxing enjoying the beautiful views of the Beartooth Mountains as a backdrop against the property. We were treated extremely well as guests and amazed at the diverse wildlife within the property boundary. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet hideout to relax from the stresses of everyday life. It is definately on my list to return in the near future. We were given a tour of the property which proved to be extremely intresting and informative regarding the history of the ranch.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: You were a delight to have as guests! Thanks again for choosing our Ranch for your stay.

I stayed at the Cobblestone House at White Deer Ranch in December 2010. I found it interesting that the houses kitchen was an original homestead. I liked that the history was there for me to read and learn about. I went for a walk in the aspen trees, saw lots of animal tracks and cool old ranch implements. I got lots of computer work done on the high speed internet, then took the rest of the time to sit by the fire and visit with my family. Very relaxing, enjoyable and peaceful place. I'd highly recommend it!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Preserving the history of the Ranch is one of the reasons we renovated the Cobblestone House so it could be shared with others like you that want to learn about it. Thanks for you review and thanks for staying at White Deer Ranch!

About the owner: Lee and Roxanne Dunn enjoy sharing the Log House and Cobblestone House with vacationers while living in year-round in another house on the Ranch. Lee and Roxanne grew up in Colorado, and both moved to Montana about 22 years ago. The Ranch is now organic certified for pasture and hay, and will be seeking organic/100% grass fed certification for cattle in the future. Please come and visit us, and we'd be glad to tell you all about this special place.
Why the Owner Chose Absarokee:
Lee and Roxanne were attracted to this area because of a combination of wide open space and mountain views. The section of land that the Ranch is located has a lake and three creeks which are flowing year-round. This makes it special because it draws all sorts of wildlife.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The vacation homes on the Ranch are up to date with all the comforts of home, yet the backdrop is spectacular, with breathtaking views of the Absaroka Beartooth Mountains and wildlife passing near the houses. Guests can enjoy walks in the aspen grove, cottonwoods, grass fields, and creek bottoms. The ranch is a peaceful and a quiet place to stay and one can have as much solitude as you like. But if it is activities that you desire there are plenty of those on the ranch and nearby. The Ranch was homesteaded by the Hudson family and much of the history is still there for visitors to see. Take a look inside the nearly 100 year old barn. We are equipped with corrals and stalls, so bring your horse and ride on the ranch or one of the many trail heads within short driving distance. Another added benefit, is the peace of mind knowing that the Ranch's owners lives on the ranch in a separate house and can assist guests, if needed..
