Port of the Islands condo description
Live in the most remote development in all of southern Florida. Only a small number of condo units in this residential community are available for seasonal rental. Surrounded by 2.4 million aces of wilderness protected by five separate state and federal lands, Port of the Islands is truly a unique location in all of southern Florida. Kayak into endless miles of mangrove and freshwater swamps, take your (or a rental) boat out to a deserted barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico where you will be alone on miles of sandy beaches. Bicycle into the Fakahatchee Strand of the Big Cypress Swamp each morning and see rare birds, reptiles, deer and panther tracks. Breakfast on the front porch overlooking the marina in the morning sun and dine on the lanai overlooking a pond and a national wildlife preserve where flocks of ibis and herons pass nightly across dramatic sunsets. Nature abounds in every direction. Even the marina is a manatee preserve where boats are restricted to idle speed, ensuring peace and quiet with fishermen who enjoy some of the best fishing in all of Florida. It’s almost like camping out, but with the luxury and convenience of modern accommodations.
The condo is located on a narrow strip of land between the Port of the Islands Marina and the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Preserve. It is a second (top) floor unit with cathedral ceilings, great views, and a constant breeze during the warm winter nights. Master bedroom has king-size bed and private bath with shower and separare watet closet. Guest bedroom has queen-size bed and separate batlh with shower and tub. Amenities include heated pool, satellite TV, wifi Internet, gas grill, garage (shared with owner) and use of canoe or kayak. Dock and boat rentals are available directly across the street at the marina. Ecotours, manatee tours, and fishing guides are also avaliable at the marina.
Tigertail Beach on Marco Island, famous for sunsets and birdwatching is just 20 minutes away. "Links of Naples" golf course is just 10 minutes away and features night golf and driving range. Historic Everglades City which has excelent seafood, a museum, boat and kayak rentals, and tours from the Everglades National Park Office is 15 minutes away
The unit is owned by a semi-retired biology professor who has another unit in this community. He has traveled the world and found Port of the Islands to be the best place to spend the winter months.

About the owner: I am a semi-retired biology professor who travels between Connecticut and Port of the Islands on a regular basis. I went to U Fla for my Ph.D. in the mid70's and did research in the Everglades. I have been returning to south Florida regularly ever since.
Why the Owner Chose Port of the Islands:
This is the best location in all of south Florida. It is as close to nature as you can get without camping out. Florida has done an outstanding job of preserving and connecting large natural areas and this area is the largest wilderness remaining in the eastern US. Port of the Islands is an undiscovered paradise for people who enjoy nature and the out of doors. It is a remnant of an older, failed development which is now undergoing restoration back to wilderness. This small community is all that is left and it is completely surrounded by protected areas on all sides. It is truly unique.
