Our newly renovated, converted one-room schoolhouse, built in 1883, is located in a private rural setting on a semi-wooded one acre lot, complete with a meandering stream and plenty of property for relaxing or entertaining guests. The 1200 square foot house has many of its original historic features, including hardwood floors with marks still visible where the school desks were bolted down, slate chalkboards, schoolhouse lights, and all ten of the original seven foot tall windows.

The floor plan is open, with a fully equipped stainless steel & granite kitchen that opens into a large dining and living area with 14 foot ceilings. The dining table seats six, and there are 3 bar stools for additional seating at the kitchen counter. There is a full bath on the first floor with a tiled walk-in shower. The living area has two couches, one with a full size pullout bed for children or guests. The loft bedroom has a double bed, a half bath and walk-in closet. There is a laundry room on the basement level.

The schoolhouse is located just 5.5 miles from downtown Westfield, NY and 16 miles from the world renowned Chautauqua Institution which offers concerts, theater performances and world famous speakers. You will be staying in the heart of Lake Erie Wine Country, with 23 estate and commercial wineries located in the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, and extending roughly 40 miles from Silver Creek, New York to North East, Pennsylvania. We are 6 miles from the Barcelona Harbor and the public beach on Lake Erie, and just 1.5 hours from the Buffalo Airport and Niagara Falls. There are several golf courses nearby as well as ski resorts, nature trails, numerous restaurants, shops, malls, museums, and a casino - most within a 30 mile radius. Enjoy some of the best fishing in the world with the Steelhead fishery found in Chautauqua Creek, or charter a boat for some Lake Erie fishing. There is so much to do, it is impossible to list it all here!

The schoolhouse is beautifully restored to a perfect blend of antiquity and contemporary comfort and convenience. The kitchen area is beautiful and very well equipped. Although the photos are great, the schoolhouse looks even better in person. The owners' loving attention to detail cannot be overlooked, from personal toiletries and luxurious linens to patio furniture and easily accessible firewood. Lovely natural landscaping and a warm, inviting firepit enhance the outdoor experience. The owner was very accessible and responsive to any questions, but not at all intrusive. The property is very well maintained. Many restaurants, wineries and the Chautauqua Institute are within easy driving distance although lounging around the greatroom and firepit were our favorite activities.

We stayed for 5 nights with our 8 month old, and we found this to be a great "jumping off" location. As the other reviews mention, it's in an out-of-the-way location which is great if you are looking for some R&R. From here, we visited Presque Isle park in Erie, the outlets in Grove City, the nearby beaches, and spent a quiet day at the schoolhouse. The schoolhouse itself is exceptionally clean and very well stocked (including a waffle maker which we enjoyed). Lots of nice details in this property like quality cookware, top of the line towels, and an especially nice firepit next to the small creek. Add this to the ambiance of staying in a renovated schoolhouse and it makes for a memorable trip. I would caution parents with small children that this property is very close to the train tracks (and a road crossing), so the trains are tooting their horns very frequently including at night. If it was just my wife and I, I don't think it would have mattered; however, with our young son it was an issue some nights as he would wake up from time to time. In summary, I would recommend this property to couples or families with older children but would caution parents with small children that the trains may be an issue. Thanks Wendy and Joe for a lovely week at the schoolhouse!

We wanted a nice 'home away from home' to come to the Westfield area for my brothers wedding. We found the Schoolhouse on VRBO. We also needed to stay from Thurs to Thurs and the owners were able to accomodate our request. Boy were we surprised at how beautiful and comfortable the place is. They have really made a gem out of the Schoolehouse with their attention to preserving some of the old details. The decorating also had a very modern feel, the bathrooms are beautiful and very functional and the kitchen was top of the line. We will come back to stay again!

School House Number 4 is a fabulous place in a romantic setting close to Lake Erie, Chautauqua, plays, symphonies, wineries, art galleries, golf, beaches, boating, great dining and evening entertainment. This is a real gem that we are hesitant to recommend for fear that too many others will load up their calendar. Clearly a labor of love by the owners, this building has been painstakingly restored with attention to quality detail. We highly recommend this for a great getaway or longer. A week for us was not enough. Enjoy!

There are not many places to stay on a rental basis in this area. My husband and I were so excited to fall into this one...It is affordable, close to everything and one of the cleanest places we have ever stayed. It has the great charm of an old schoolhouse but all the modern appliances and updates. All of our needs were taken care of, and then some. Definitely will be back and suggest others check it out, you will not be disappointed!

I recently had the privilege of spending a few days at the "charming schoolhouse". The attention to details and mixture of modern conveniences and historic touches are indeed impressive. The property "feels" far away yet is close to many area attractions. I hope to return again soon and will highly recommend this property to everyone I know.

My husband and I spent the weekend at the schoolhouse to celebrate our anniversary. It was the perfect choice. The house is absolutely gorgeous. The house blends the character and charm of days gone past while bringing all of the first rate amenities that a person desires. The house provides a quiet setting while being just minutes to all of the wineries, restaurants, etc. The owners were very helpful with their suggestions. I have already recommended the schoolhouse to my friends and family. You will not be disappointed!

I have already recommended the schoolhouse to friends and relatives who enjoy visiting the area. The atmosphere of this beautifully restored schoolhouse is so quiet and peaceful. It feels very private yet is minutes from the wineries, shops, horseback riding, restaurants and Chautauqua Institute. The property was very easy to find. The owners are great and very helpful and familiar with the area. They recommended all of the great local places!

I have stayed twice and would highly recommend the schoolhouse for a relaxing getaway, wine trail weekend, or for people who are spending time at the Chautauqua Institution. The schoolhouse is beautifully restored and maintains its original charm, but it has been completely updated to include all modern amenities. The property is very clean and well-maintained and the owners are great. A wonderful experience!

              Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: My husband and I purchased this property in 2005 with a vision of restoring it into something that we could enjoy ourselves, and share with others.

              Why the Owner Chose Westfield:
We both grew up in the area and we love where we live! Knowing how much our friends from out of town love the area too, we felt we couldn't go wrong investing in our own back yard.
