You will be enchanted by the Clearfield Cottage, which is nestled in the Smokies with a spectacular view of Mount Mitchell and surrounding mountains but only ½ hour from Asheville’s world-class restaurants, entertainment, and the famous Biltmore Estate. This two story, romantic cottage is entirely new, fresh, green built, green furnished and eco-friendly. The unique interiors feature original artwork and mosaics by owner and internationally renowned artist, Rachel Clearfield. The downstairs kitchen, dining and living area has a stunning mosaic floor, named 'Stepping Stones in a Flower Garden' made of Brazilian polished granite. Upstairs is the amazingly intricate, mosaic bathroom shower, called 'Magnolia Trees,” made of European marble and colorful stones. The kitchen has all granite countertops. The upstairs bedroom has a beautifully finished 100-year-old maple floor and a sumptuously comfortable queen size futon bed with luxurious linens.
Outside the cottage there is a peaceful shade garden with a rose covered gazebo in which you can swing, listen to the creek and watch the birds and butterflies. Guests are welcome to enjoy the sunny heirloom vegetable, herb and flower garden when seasonal fresh salad, vegetables and flowers are available to grace your table. Of course, all of the land and gardens are organic courtesy of the leaves, grass clippings and contributions from our beautiful white Arabian horse. You also have your own private outdoor sitting area, perfect for enjoying your morning coffee, sipping a glass of evening Chardonnay and stargazing the sequined night sky without light pollution.
This cottage is a perfect getaway for a romantic weekend, soulful retreat, girl’s time together or just a quiet, peaceful place to let go of the challenges of one’s life and return to the simple joys of existence and beauty. The owners, who live on the property, are recording artist, cellist and conductor, Ron Clearfield, and his wife, fine artist Rachel Clearfield. There is an abundance of creative energy on this property for anyone who needs a place to find that seed of inspiration for their next book, album or painting. Without a doubt, this is a paradise for painters, photographers and nature lovers or just anyone who is looking for a beautiful, fulfilling time in the mountains.

My husband and I came for a weekend getaway/babymoon and didn't want to leave. The cottage and surroundings are so charming, which creates the perfect atmosphere to relax . The owners are very friendly and welcoming, they even told us to take home a book from the cottage "library" for our little girl at home and one for the baby on the way. We can't wait to visit again!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for your review. You and Eric were such a sweet couple and we're so glad you had a special getaway stay in the cottage. Hope the little one enjoyed the book! Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

My husband and I LOVED this vacation. There is endless beauty and love at Clearfield Cottage and the surrounding vistas. And Asheville is just 'down the block'- what a wonderful town! This vacation was just what we needed. We came home transformed after only three days! We will be back, maybe even this fall.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Dear Jane, It was so wonderful having you and your husband stay in the cottage. You both were such wonderful people and we're really glad you enjoyed your stay! Warm best wishes, Ron and Rachel

I stayed at Clearfield Cottage for six nights and it was perfect for my needs. I was working on a creative project, so I brought my computer and set it up on the dining room table and my ideal life began. Waking early, making delicious coffee from Asheville Coffee Roasters (purchased before I arrived), sitting on the window seat with my coffee and watching the sun rise over the mountains from the huge picture window. Then working on my project for three or four hours, including creative daydreaming enhanced by the view of the weather (which ranged from crystal blue skies to pouring rain and a massive rainbow right outside the window). Fixing lunch in the well appointed kitchen, then either working more in the afternoon, or going on hikes, reading beside the creek or curled up on the sofa. At night I kept the window open and fell asleep to the music of the rushing creek right outside the window. I am very picky about where I stay and am used to staying in four to five star hotels. Clearfield Cottage certainly rivaled a fine hotel, with its plush towels, luxurious sheets, and incredibly beautiful and restful decor. Ron and Rachel were wonderful. Not intrusive at all, but always friendly and available. Their sweet, happy animals were amazing, and were part of the overall five star experience for me. Unfortunately I stayed in the winter, when the organic garden was sparse, but Rachel gave me delicious onions and sunchokes that I used to supplement my own food. I HIGHLY recommend Clearfield Cottage to anyone who wants a peaceful, inspiring, relaxing, beautiful spiritual and/or creative retreat.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
Owner response: Dear Elizabeth, We were honored to have such a refined musician and writer submit this stellar review. You really captured the essence of your stay and what the cottage and the magic in and around it can offer. Our goal has always been to present a special getaway for guests way beyond the norm of traditional holiday retreats and making available the possibility of an experience that could be savored and treasured for a lifetime. Thanks again for sharing! Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights and we wanted to stay forever! It's thoroughly the best vacation we've ever had! Rachel and Ron are such nice, creative, welcoming people! It is so beautiful! It's on the side of a mountain you can hike and see stunning views of the Smoky mountains all around you. Theres a garden, a pony, a horse, a spring right beside the cottage, and a precious dog named Sparky. I seriously for once have nothing bad to say about where we stayed. We can't wait to go back !Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Aimee, It was so nice to have you and your husband stay in the cottage. Thank you for such a great review. You both were such wonderful guests and took full advantage of the beauty and fun in and around the cottage. Our drive up the mountain and your hike to very top was an adventurous experience for all. Thanks again! Ron and Rachel

Nestled underneath some of the highest peaks in the Smokey Mountains lies a little town outside of Asheville, NC called Leicester. Up a long gravel drive, live the artistic Ron and Rachel Clearfield. Ron plays the cello for weddings at the Vanderbilt’s famous Biltmore Estate, founded the Blue Ridge Orchestra in 1999, and serves as Conductor for the Appalachian Festival Orchestra and Asheville Youth Orchestra. Rachel is an artist educated in England at the Newcastle College of Art and the Manchester College of Art, and has shown her work at many art galleries since her move to America in 1976. Out of a kind-hearted will to share their transcendental view of life, the Clearfields created a seemingly magical cottage aside their horse pasture. The most amazing benefit of staying in the Clearfield Cottage is the distinct view of the Smokey Mountains. As John Berger says in Ideology, “Seeing comes before words.” Though he is referring to the growing skills of an infant, his simple sentence also describes the importance of experiencing the relieving effects of seeing colorful mountains and landscapes. For those that cannot see the amazing views firsthand, Rachel has original and digital copies of oil paintings that portray the beautiful surroundings of her home. Art critic Sylvia Penn says, The diversity of details, the patterns, the intricate rhythms, presented in a visionary style, add up to haunting landscapes of inner experiences, not soon forgotten.” Penn also believes that the inner experiences of seeing the stunning mountain vistas are a powerful healing tool. The art of music is another amazing experience that the Clearfields want to share. Ron’s skilled reputation and professional demeanor result directly from his broad spectrum of work. He says that making a living as an artist is not easy. It may not always be a lucrative business, but the constant therapy of playing and listening to instrumental music is priceless. As Maxine Greene wrote in Releasing the Imagination, “To tap into imagination is to become able to break with what is supposedly fixed and finished, objectively and independently real.” When Ron plays the Cello or conducts an orchestra, everything real around him disappears. In addition, the number of hearts and minds that Ron has touched may be infinite. His contribution to the Asheville Youth Orchestra has certainly helped children attain their dreams of becoming musicians. In addition, the Mozart Effect helps members of his OrcheRecommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hi Thomas, what a wonderful review! It reads like a great short story. Good history and background about Rachel and I, the area, and property. Honestly and sincerely, if we ever need a gifted tour guide, you'll be the first we call! Seriously, we appreciate your time to inform future guests of the depth of the Clearfield Cottage experience. Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

My husband and I felt honored to be able to stay at this cottage for the weekend. I stepped out the back door into the beautiful morning sun to say hello to the pony grazing across the creek and felt like I was in the European countryside. It's so quiet and in a very peaceful way. The pictures on this website are beautiful and accurate, yet my expectations were still exceeded. You just can't anticipate properly the spirit of this place. The bed was firm, the bedding was soft and clean and comfortable. Our favorite meals were the ones we cooked in the beautiful kitchen. The view is a classic smokey mountain view. We enjoyed a tour of Ron and Rachel's home, which is kind of a live-in art gallery. Rachel shared some persimmons she harvested with us. Both of them were very laid back and easy to work with, professional and unobtrusive but flexible and friendly. It was a perfect weekend.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hi Kathryn, We were honored to have such appreciative people like you and your husband stay in the cottage. Your detailed description, and we say this with humility, was truly accurate and obviously comes from a very esthetically sensitive person. For you to say that your stay was perfect fills us with much gratitude to be able to share this special place with others. Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

My boyfriend and I spent this past week staying at Clearfield, a retreat from our hectic city life. Right off the bat, Ron and Rachael were incredibly gracious, bringing us over sandwiches and chips after we naively thought we would find a grocery store on the way to the cottage from the mountains at night (we did not!). The cottage itself is magical. I was skeptical that it would match the beauty in the photos, but it truly does. The surroundings are so tranquil and beautiful, the whole thing just seemed to come out of a Disney movie. The veggies Rachael shared from her garden were delicious and made the experience that much more sweet. We spent the week half and half between hanging out in Asheville, visiting breweries and shopping, and exploring the mountains, via the Blue Ridge Parkway and also on a hike with Ron, Rachael, their horse, pony and dog. They showed us a completely secluded part of the mountain that nobody would ever even know about had they not been there to guide us. I could go on and on about how great this trip was. It was a spiritual experience and healing, and it was difficult to leave! Rachael's wonderful art and Ron's beautiful music make this place a great trip for anyone looking to tap into their creative side in a serene setting. We can't wait to come back and would recommend Clearfield to anyone!.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hi Heather, your review was very touching. Thank you. Yes, it was really fun for us to bring you over some food when we discovered that you were hungry and tired and we didn't want you to have to go out and drive some more just to stock up the fridge. A reminder to our readers, remember to bring food!! I know you didn't mention it but I thought I'd also say that we even brought you and your boyfriend over a nice bottle of champagne! We could tell you were both well over 21 and we don't always do that but we thought it would be an extra special gesture for such a nice couple. Yes, Asheville is a incredible place. They don't call it the Paris of the south for nothing and also the micro-brewery capitol of USA! The brewery tour is one of my personal favorites but it's not easy to get through all of them sampling their goods! The winery tour of the celebrated Biltmore Estate is also very special. All just a 1/2 hour away! Our excursion up the mountain was definitely fun. We took you both to an unusually beautiful but easily accessible area of the mountain above us that has been completely protected from any commercial development or environmental pollution. There are still places like this on Earth! Above all, we really appreciate your appreciation of the beauty and healing qualities of Rachel's artwork which adorns the cottage and my music which sonically compliments the whole experience. Thanks for your comments!
