Asheville cottage description

You will be enchanted by the Clearfield Cottage which was just featured out of hundreds of properties in the area on ABC TV's reality show, 'Sweet Retreats.' Click on the video and watch the beautiful footage from the Sweet Retreats episode about the Clearfield Cottage. A word about reality shows; it's ironic, but reality shows aren't all reality. When they filmed the cottage the host explained to us that each episode has a plot, an outcome, and the dialogue between the guests set up the outcome of their decision of which property they would ultimately choose. In the complete show they chose a loft in town but both the guests and the host said that in reality, they would have selected the cottage. So the dialogue about the drive was part of the plot thickening. Actually it's only a 1/2 hr drive to town and except for the strip malls in the last 15 minutes near Asheville it’s a really pretty countryside drive. The cottage is nestled in the Smokies with a spectacular view of Mount Mitchell and surrounding mountains but only ½ hour from Asheville’s world-class restaurants, entertainment, and the famous Biltmore Estate. This two story, romantic cottage is entirely new, fresh, green built, green furnished and eco-friendly. The unique interiors feature original artwork and mosaics by owner and internationally renowned artist, Rachel Clearfield. The downstairs kitchen, dining and living area has a stunning mosaic floor, named 'Stepping Stones in a Flower Garden' made of Brazilian polished granite. Upstairs is the amazingly intricate, mosaic bathroom shower, called 'Magnolia Trees,” made of European marble and colorful stones. The kitchen has all granite countertops. The upstairs bedroom has a beautifully finished 100-year-old maple floor and a sumptuously comfortable queen size futon bed with luxurious linens.

Outside the cottage there is a peaceful shade garden with a rose covered gazebo in which you can swing, listen to the creek and watch the birds and butterflies. Guests are welcome to enjoy and roam through the beautiful flower gardens. You also have a lovely outdoor sitting area right by your back door, perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or sipping a glass of evening Chardonnay and stargazing the sequined night sky without light pollution. There's also a wonderful barbecue, camp fire and chiminea area right by your own private creek.

This cottage is a perfect getaway for a romantic weekend, soulful retreat, girl’s time together or just a quiet, peaceful place to let go of the challenges of one’s life and return to the simple joys of existence and beauty. The owners, who live on the property, are recording artist, cellist and conductor, Ron Clearfield, and his wife, fine artist Rachel Clearfield. There is an abundance of creative energy on this property for anyone who needs a place to find that seed of inspiration for their next book, album or painting. Without a doubt, this is a paradise for painters, photographers and nature lovers or just anyone who is looking for a beautiful, fulfilling time in the mountains.

I know it's not "ours" technically but it felt like home. We loved waking up to beautiful, peaceful sunrises in this cozy place. We needed to escape city living for a while and this was the perfect place. We hiked, we cooked, we slept (very well I might add). I wish we could have stayed longer. Rachel and Ron were wonderful hosts (Sparky, our hooved friends and kitty cat were great companions). We are looking forward to our next visit.

Owner response: Thanks Aisha for your kind review! We're so glad the cottage offered a wonderful respite for you and your husband. We get quite a lot of people from the big city of Chicago and we're honored that the cottage is your home away from home! Best wishes, Ron and Rachel

Having lived most of our lives near mountains, we are currently living in flat southern Alabama. Our first glimpse of the foothills of the Appalachians on our drive up brought an unanticipated sigh of relief. My husband and I, along with our 3 young daughters rested here for 3 nights between work and a rather long Christmas road-trip. Ron and Rachel were very helpful via email even before we arrived. I won't detail all the ways that they went above and beyond the call of hospitality (for fear they feel pressured to repeat it all on every occasion!); suffice it to say, they welcomed us with open hearts and took an interest in our girls. The girls, who all squeezed onto the sleeper couch at night, played outside all day, despite the rain, swinging in the hammock, climbing trees, picking herbs from the garden and grooming/riding/leading the pony, Princess. The photos give a good idea of the uniqueness of the cottage, but cannot show the wonderful details. The attention to detail and creativity is refreshing and astounding. The cottage was clean and well-maintained. We would recommend it whole-heartedly to anyone seeking a patch of peace and some solace in the mountains.

Owner response: Hi Ruth, It was so wonderful to have you, your husband and those three sweet daughters of yours stay in the cottage. It was really fun watching them groom and play with little princess our Shetland pony. We're just so glad you found the cottage to feel like your home. You and your family will always be part of the family here. Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

We had a wonderful stay at Clearfied Cottage. Our hosts were respectful of our privacy and a pleasure to talk to. The accomodations are comfortable cozy and warm. The view wonderful and the sun streaming in the large windows during morning tea warmed the heart and soul.

We arrived near dinner time on a Saturday evening and after speaking to Ron via email, explaining that we would be grilling out-he had our grill already lit. By the way, the "we" consists of me and my 2 daughters, ages 19 and 17 and we arrived in a Mini Cooper-crazy, huh? We had been travelling around 8 hours, from Tallahassee, FL-we were ready for some cooler weather, some relaxing, some adventure and a change of scenery. We were able to achieve all of our goals with the help of Ron and Rachel. We woke up Sunday morning, rested and looking forward to checking out the property. I had brought enough grub for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast but figured we would head in to town for lunch. We weren't interested in leaving-if you saw this place, you would want to stay put too. Rachel showed us around her bountiful garden, still having plenty of flowering plants and enough food to contain us. With Rachel's assistance and education while doing so, we harvested plenty of food for our lunch and to add to other dinners while we were there: hardy squash of some name I can't remember, chard, green onions, beets, fresh herbs, blackberries and our favorite, beans of many colors. My eldest daughter was captured on camera, sitting in the window seat, while the horses grazed nearby, shelling beans of multiple varieties. You can't get that in college. My youngest daughter chose to use the varietal of herbs to make tea concoctions-I'm assuming they were all legal. It's not all about the food though, Asheville is incredible, with restaurants to fit your mood, live music on the street and shopping for funky stuff. We also filled our adventurous side one day, white water rafting and then flying through the trees on the zip-lining tour. I'm hesitant to refer you here because I want it available when we are ready to come back. One thing I would do differently, stay a month vs. a few days.

Owner response: Dear Robbyn, Thank you for your lovely review. It was such a pleasure having you and your two wonderful daughters stay and so appreciate the cottage and land around us. We hope to see you again soon and thanks for sharing with others the magic and beautiful of the Clearfield Cottage. Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

My husband and I spent a weekend at the cottage for our anniversary. We were inspired by the artful creativity expressed in the design and décor of the cottage and gardens and we loved sitting in the window seat watching the horses and bees. It is close enough to Asheville to make a run for dinner, but far enough to have a country feel as well and we really felt like we were "getting away from it all." I would definitely recommend this place and hope to visit again.

You wrote a nice description and we really agree with you that the cottage offers the best of both possibilities; a beautiful and peaceful country setting and yet a short drive to Asheville the so called "Paris of the South" with great restaurants, entertainment and interesting people. Hope to see you again! Ron and Rachel

I came to the Asheville area for hiking, yoga and meditation and Clearfield Cottage was the perfect spot for all of this. I was surrounded by all things that I treasure for 4 days and nights - beautiful gardens, peaceful mountains, animals (horse, pony, dog, cat, and a few other wild critters), gentle running water from mountain stream, and a wonderful, comfortable and creatively furnished cottage. I especially loved reflecting on the symbolism in Rachel's paintings daily (the more you look at them, the more you can see; they reveal themselves over time :>)). Ron and Rachel were gracious hosts and even drove me to the top of the mountain so that I could hike and gave me a tour of their house (more beautiful art work inside). I loved everything about my stay and would definitely like to come back again (perhaps in the fall/winter)!

My husband and I stayed here for four nights and did not want to leave. Such a serene setting for the lovely cabin that is every bit as picturesque as it appears in the photos. Such a calming and healing atmosphere there. We loved being able to keep the windows open at night while feeling the cool mountain breeze and listening to the sound of the creek flowing nearby. Very comfortable bed and pillows as well. As for the decor, it was just so beautiful, from the gorgeous paintings to the unique rock tiled floors and shower. The owners are such a talented and delightful couple. Having the opportunity to see Rachel's artwork and hear a sampling of Ron's music is an experience I will never forget. It was also a treat to meet sparky the dog. Such a friendly and unique dog. We hope to be able to return for another visit sometime in the not so distant future!

My wife and I arrived at this idyllic cottage after a 14 hour ride from CT. As soon as we got inside, we could feel the tranquility of the setting just melt away our stress. We immediately felt like we were home. The brook which runs just outside the cottage does wonders for creating this atmosphere. Even the rain on the tin roof panels created a wonderful sound which helped us sleep soundly! The photos don't do justice to how beautiful the area really is. The place was clean and comfortable. Ron and Rachel were great with pointing us in the right direction for what we needed to find (groceries, etc.) Downtown Asheville is great. There is a lot to see and do. We fell in love with the Mellow Mushroom restaurant. The food was excellent! There is something for every palette there. When we come back to the area, we'll likely stay at the cottage again. My wife and I wholeheartedly recommend this place!

My husband and I came for a weekend getaway/babymoon and didn't want to leave. The cottage and surroundings are so charming, which creates the perfect atmosphere to relax . The owners are very friendly and welcoming, they even told us to take home a book from the cottage "library" for our little girl at home and one for the baby on the way. We can't wait to visit again!

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing.

Owner response: Thanks for your review. You and Eric were such a sweet couple and we're so glad you had a special getaway stay in the cottage. Hope the little one enjoyed the book! Warm regards, Ron and Rachel

About the owner: Owner's Ron and Rachel Clearfield are musicians and artists. We've practiced meditation, sustainable living and the joys of life for many decades. The beauty of nature, art, music and healthy lifestyles are foremost in our beliefs.

                          Why the Owner Chose Asheville:
We actually built this guest cottage just this year (2012.) A labor of love, situated on our beautiful land; a place to share with others who are looking for something unique. We chose nearby Asheville because Asheville rocks! Incredible restaurants, entertainment and always fun things to do and people to see. They don't call it the 'Paris' of the south for nothing!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We've personally stayed many times in the cottage and have always been impressed with how peaceful, esthetically inspiring, quiet and restful our stay was.
