Roseburg house description
Soak up the peace and power of the North Umpqua River in all its year-round moods from the comfort of the living room, with no humans in sight and an old-growth forest backdrop. This large custom house is perched on a high wooded riverbank over a pool and rapids with old-growth forest lining the opposite side. Salmon, steelhead, and trout are in the river year-round, and the house front features the rich bright colors of a fresh salmon fillet. Eagles and osprey fly by at eye-level, otters and geese frolic in the river below.
Excellent for a stay-cation right on the river, but also a good home-base for day-trips -- centrally located between Crater Lake National Park and many Pacific Ocean beach parks (1.5 hours to each). Wine country, antique shops, waterfall hikes, Steamboat Inn, and Diamond Lake are within an hours drive. And the 33-mile North Umpqua Wild & Scenic River section begins within 2 miles, and also is the beginning of the 33 miles of world-famous fly fishing water.
See photos for the lay of the land and modern amenities of this spacious, comfortable house and beautiful reach of river.

The pictures of the house can not describe the feeling you get while staying there. The view and sound of the river are unbelievable. Not to mention great steelhead fishing right below the house. I caught seven steelhead between 4 and 12lbs during my stay there. I would recomend statying at the house to anyone, it s truely one of the most unique homes I have ever stayed in.

Annual Falll Steelhead Retreat
We arrived at the Riverhouse in early October 2013 on the heels of an epic early rainstorm. The river was up about 2 feet from summer levels, but still green and dropping. The view from the house was a spectacular backdrop as we made our plans for steehead fishing. Rolling spring chinook, river otters, bald eagles, and the real-time view of river levels kept us glued to the windows. On the river the fishing was great as always, but the catching was challenging. We struck out in the fly water - perhaps many fish were headed up to Steamboat Creek, or the drop in water temperatures put them off. Downstream of the Swiftwater area, we were able to catch three steelhead after more effort than usual. Two hatchery fish and one chrome wild hen released to join her cohorts upstream. Three nights in the Riverhouse went by quickly - restful nights of sleep with the river soundtrack, epic meals in the spacious kitchen and off of the new gas barbie. We were sad to leave and hope to return again in the fall for yet another repeat fishing experience.

Excellent River Location

I got together with several high school buddies to fly fish the North Umpqua River, and this house easily accomodated 4 of us. The house was clean and had all the linens and supplies we needed to cook up our meals. We had a GREAT time and I highly recommend this rental to anyone considering a fishing get-away in this beautiful part of the country!

Owner response: This is the best flyfishing house on the North Umpqua. You can watch the daily cycles of fish movement and feeding right out the living room windows. Rod rests and wader hooks are strategically placed to keep your gear safe and dry during breaks between fishing.
Great vacation home..did a family vacation July 2013 was one of our best vacations..the house was amazing and the river soooo close..if you want to relax and enjoy family rent this house.

Owner response: Glad you enjoyed our place. We offer plenty of space for family meals, games, puzzles, watching wildlife from the couches, and hanging outside on the deck and patios. There's a place for everyone!
Simply the Best.

My stay was incredible. The accommodations were top notch. Very clean and comfortable. I have lived in some of the nicer places along the river and must say that this is one of the best. I loved the sound of the river and the view. All of this, plus the fact that I was within a mile of some of the best salmon fishing on the river and world class steelheading out the back door. It was nice to be able to sit on the deck, eating that day's catch while watching the next day's catch migrate upstream. Also, the owner was very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to family and friends. I plan to be back very soon.

Best location on North Umpqua
Best location on North Umpqua
I Stayed at the River retreat house for three days during January. As an avid fly fisherman I could not have chosen a better place to stay. The fishing right out in front of the House was spectacular, it features a tailout that could be on the front page of any fishing publication. Below the tailout the river fans out into a very wadeable run (Richs Run) that dumps into a nice trough where steelhead hold regularly, you are able to continue walking downstream past the deep pool for about a half mile where more Steelhead water awaits. I have only talked about the water out the front door, from this primary location I was able to sample water on the North in the flywater which is only a mile upstream, boatable water where there is a put-in a mile downstream, and the main Umpqua which was only a thirty minute drive. The Amenities far exceeded my expectations, the house was cleaned spotlessly and I did my best to leave it that way. The living room window overlooked the water where you would spend your days fishing, appliances were all fairly new and in fine working order, a three bedroom with four total beds for all my fish bum buddies to stay in, washer and dryer for our extended day, bamboo flooring and tile in kitchen, plenty of parking for my boat and trailer and two other vehicles, the house is all freshly remodeled, outside has a beautiful exterior paint, and two bathrooms both with showers. I have stayed elsewhere on the North, but will now only return to The North Umpqua River Retreat. Thanks to Rich for being a great host, Clay Holloway, Ty Holloway, Lou Verdugo

Owner response: This is the only North Umpqua lodging I know about where you can spot wild steelhead from the living room window, then go catch them -- or at least try! By far the best steelhead flyfishing house on the river, in my humble opinion. Glad you enjoyed it!
A room with a view!

My brother (who lives in Roseburg) rented this house for us on our annual fishing trip---it was AMAZING! We could sit on the deck and sight steelhead in the pool below the house...and then walk down our own private path to get within casting range...it was also refreshing to take a dip in the big pool just upstream of the path. Rich sets up a canopy that provides shade on hot days...wonderful to just hang out at the house and hear/watch the river flow by...overall, a wonderful place to be. Hope to visit again!

Owner response: Indeed this may be the only vacation house on the river where you can spot fishable steelhead right from the living room!
The pictures and description of this rental don't express how truely amazing it really is. We came out for a family wedding and this house more than met our needs. The house was larger than we expected, is extremely well cared for and is beautiful inside and out. The owners were wonderful and very accomodating. I'm already trying to figure out when I can come back and stay again. I can't put into words how much I recommend this property.

Best place to stay on the North Umpqua!
Best place to stay on the North Umpqua!
This last weekend my friends and I stayed at the River House just upstream of Glide Oregon on the North Umpqua. This was our second time staying in this picturesque location. Upon arrival, after we got off of the river, we were greeted with a beautiful evening and a very comfortable bed (foam mattress). The parking area at the cabin is ample which is key if you’re towing a drift boat like us. The next morning we drove up the road (1/2 mile) to little deli for some great breakfast burritos and headed to the Colliding Rivers boat launch (only 2-3 miles away from the cabin). The River House is a great jump off point for any float on the North Umpqua, its central location really maximizes your fishing to driving time. After we caught 4 beautiful wild winter steelhead we called it a float and headed back to the cabin. Our day wasn’t done though as the River House has a beautiful steelhead drift located just upstream from the cabin. We didn’t get one that particular evening but a prettier drift you won’t find, complete with old growth and ancient basalt highlighting the other side of the river (which you can see from the house). We even saw a river otter hunting mussels. I highly recommend staying at the River House whether your goal is catching a 20 pound wild winter steelhead or relaxation.

Owner response: Thanks Garth, you're right that a lot of vacation rentals don't have room for boats like we do, or are so close to several ramps. We're looking forward to the tradition of your float-fishing visits! Rich and Karen
