Riverfront Cabin in the Beartooth Mountains, Cody Wy, Cooke City Mt

The Trapper Cabin at Beartooth Lodge is a 500 sq. ft. 1 bedroom cabin with river frontage on the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River. There is a queen size bed in the bedroom and a double hide-a-bed sofa in the living room. These are better accommodations then Louis and Clark had when they came through here.
If you need more sleeping room ask about the Bear cave cabin next to the Trapper Cabin for an extra $60.00 a night, sleeps 2.
Our cabins are the perfect place for wildlife watching in the Beartooth Mountains, sightseeing in Yellowstone National Park, and trips to Cody, Wyoming and Red Lodge, Montana on some of America’s most spectacular roads. We have vast herds of elk and bison, big horn sheep, coyotes, deer, mountain goats, grizzly bears, black bears and many birds including ravens and bald eagles. Since the reintroduction of the wolf in 1995, this valley has also provided almost daily sightings of wolves.
For an adventure outside of Yellowstone National Park, a two-hour drive will take you to Red Lodge, Montana over the Beartooth Highway, one of America’s most beautiful roadways. Red Lodge is an old gold mining town, which has grown into a picturesque ski resort with numerous shops and restaurants. Heading to the east on the Chief Joseph Highway 296 and over historic Dead Indian Pass provides a wide vista of the Rocky Mountains. Chief Joseph Highway will take you to Cody, Wyoming, where there is a nightly gunfight and rodeo during the summer season.
Our cabins are located on 6 1/2 acres of secluded, wooded land, bordering National Forest land on two sides. You can end your day with smores while sitting around the fire pit in front of the cabin. For a short outing, you can follow the private trail down river and enjoy the wildlife.
If you find that this cabin is already booked on the dates you wanted you can try calling us to see if one of our other cabins are available. 1-307-587-7100 ask for Mallie

I had the good fortune to rent the Trapper cabin for 4 months of winter 2013. The owners, Zig and Mallie, were friendly and helpful, ready to help out in any way they could to make my experience all that it was and made me feel welcome. It turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time in the mountains, out in wilderness, and experience genuine solitude; it was just what I was looking for! Cooke City, one of the west’s premier snowmobile destinations, is just 17 miles or so from Crandall. It is only accessible by snowmobile in the winter but it’s a great place to get some pizza and visit town when needed; Cody is only an hour away. The cabin itself was perfect … just as you image it would be, a log cabin built by hand, next to a river up in the Rockies where wildlife was abundant. Moose, deer, wolf, were all part of my experience. It couldn’t have been more picturesque. The Clark’s fork of the Yellowstone River flows right in front of the cabin and has a wonderful walking path that follows the river for about a 1/3 mile or so, makes for a great walk. We look forward to our return trip this summer. Thanks again Zig and Mallie!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed in the Bear Cave Cabin for 16 days and enjoyed every minute of our time here. We couldn’t get over how peaceful and quiet it was at the property. Also, the mornings were usually fairly calm but then mid-afternoon a light to moderate breeze would kick in, making it very comfortable to sit on the river bank even when it was 80-90 degrees outside.Mornings and evenings we had campfires. The location is stunningly gorgeous, views of the mountains abound. We spent the vast majority of our time on the river, Stephen was amazed how quickly he caught fish. Also, the owners Zig and Mallie were very helpful in the reservation process and also in providing input on things to do. They also took us on a couple 4 wheeling excursions. The cabin is very clean and well supplied. It was easy to do some hiking right from the cabin, we especially loved going to the creek and the State lands. Cody is about 35 miles away, but the drive is very easy (not like switchback mountain driving) and would take us about 40 minutes. Cody has a Wal-Mart for a big stock up. Yellowstone is less than 1 hour from the property. You must take the drive to Red Lodge if you want an absolutely spectacular drive and don’t mind switchbacks and heights. We did see a lot of buffalo, elk and deer, plus 3 black kittens and their mama regularly made appearances (could have been the tasty meals we gave them!). There were very few bugs to speak of. Zig was very accommodating with information and let Stephen work with him on the sawmill and starting the building process of their new workshop/garage and caretakers structure. Mallie was right there working alongside Zig! Their property is breathtakingly beautiful and Zig and Mallie make you feel like part of the family. The pictures on the internet are true to life but being there is even greater. Zig and Mallie have given great thought and attention to detail to provide everything you would need to have a relaxed and enjoyable vacation. They even have a Cowboy Hot tub by the river! Zig's Indian inspired handicrafts were truly beautiful works of art. Thank you to the both of them for all they did! We would happily return again!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Yvonne and Stephen, Our kittens miss you so much. We miss you too. We are so glad when we hear that our guest love our place just as much as we do. We are looking forward to coming to Az. this winter to see you guys. Zig misses Stephen helping him on the saw mill (but not as much as I do) Still working on the shop!!! You were great renters and left our cabin spotless !! Thank You. Zig & Mallie

Zig and Mallie have a heart so pure. A couple broke down while my wife and I were there and they took them in for the night. The next day Zig and Mallie fed them breakfast; Zig hooked up his trailer to the truck and drove them & their vehicle to Billings, over hours away. Zig and Mallie are sincere and their placed is like no other. We had a great time up and down the river just outside our cabin. We hope to return. Thank you Zig and MallieRecommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Thank Mallie and Zig for all the fantastic memoires, we really loved it. Driving to and from Wyoming to Maryland was very trying. Our son Ryan was coaxed into going on this trip. That feeling vanished when arriving at Zig & Mallie's, We knew immediately upon arrival that we hit the jackpot on picking the right place. You are the perfect distance from Yellowstone. We actually stayed in Yellowstone the night before we arrived at Zig and Mallie's place. There is no comparison. The topography in their location is even more beautiful than Yellowstone. As a professional gardener, I have never seen such natural beauty with regard to the wild flowers. We had planned to drive to Yellowstone the whole week. We wound up going there only two days. The rest of the days were spent in the Beartooth area. Stunning place! We usually travel in a motor home, but this time we traveled in a full-sized passenger van because of the distance and mountains. Staying at cabins where the hosts interacts with you on a personal level was very important to the experience in this fantastically beautiful wilderness area. The trip was everything and more that we could have hoped for. Zig & Mallie have an open invitation to visit us in our home in Pasadena, Maryland. They work very hard to make their guests experience affordable and memorable. The cabins are works of art. You will not be disappointed.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the nice review Bonnie, hope to see you again and we will take you up on your offer when we are in Maryland. These people were the greatest guests, ever meet someone for the first time and it was like you knew them forever? That is these guys. You guys are family now and we hope to see you again. Thanks for the ideas for our rock garden! Zig

Image: you're lying in your bed in the morning and you're looking outside through the windows and what you see is a snow-covered mountain top, beautiful meadows and untouched forest. All you hear is birds and the streaming of the Clark's Fork River. You're really away from city life. Stay away if you like shopping malls, come immediately if you want to experience a touch of wilderness! We stayed the whole month of May in the cabin. We slept heavenly in the comfortable twin bed in the cabin Zig & Mallie build themselves with logs from their property. On cold days the electric heating makes the cabin nicely warm. The cabin is basic but everything you need is there. We enjoyed cooking our meals outside. We had lots of space around the cabin, so we put one pick-nick table in the sunny meadow at the river and one under the shady trees. Zig and Mallie are great hosts, very helpful and respect your privacy. They are always in for a good story and can tell you lot interesting stuff about daily life in this remote area. And don't forget to climb Mount Mallie when your there.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the great review, we are so glad you chose us to stay with for 30 days. You both were very good tenants and we hope you come back with the boys! Please tell all your friends in the Netherlands about us!

About the owner: Richard(Zig) & Mallie Zickefoose Hi,We are an outdoor loving couple and we are living the life we enjoy. We are both retired and love making new friends from all over the world.
Why the Owner Chose Cody:
We found this area 14 years ago and decided there was no other place in the world more beautiful than here, we made this area our home. There are so many things to do in our area that we have found out that it has kept us young ! If you want to get away from the hussel and bussel of city living there is nothing better than sitting next to the river reading a book or maybe taking in some fishing. You will not be bothered by a lot of people. We bought this property because of its seclusion!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We enjoy it here because of the great fishing and hunting. Yellowstone National Park is close by so we can go there any time we like. We also love to take our four wheelers into the backcountry in the summer and in the winter there is fantastic snowmobiling from our doorstep. If you like to hike there is no better place, if you like to view wildlife it gets no better than here. Our families come and stay and it is a great vacation spot that young children will remember for a long time! We also have the beautiful Bear Tooth Mountains out our back door.
