A vacation that changed our lives
A vacation that changed our lives
My husband and I recently stayed at Debbie and Michael's lovely home in Loreto Bay for three weeks, and found the entire experience to be absolutely enchanting. In fact, we are making some life changes that will allow us to return to the area in the future for months at a time. It is beautifully furnished as described, comfortable, clean, well-designed. We felt very safe with the 24-hour security. It is free of noise pollution--no blowers, mowers, loud music, loud cars... Debbie was always available via email for questions, and anything that needed attending to (light bulbs, etc.) was handled by Dahir, the property manager, promptly. For us, it was the perfect setting to enjoy the amenities of a resort community, such as the lovely salt water swimming pool and beautiful beach, but also to get out and around Baja and Loreto. There is a community room that offers Spanish lessons twice-a-week, a great coffee shop, El Corazon, and extraordinary grounds for strolling. It was a home base from which to explore Mexico. And we had some great adventures! We took two whale watching tours, one to Magdalena Bay and the other to San Ignacio. We were visited by a "friendly" grey whale who allowed us to touch her, opened her cavernous mouth, gently rocked our boat, and sprayed us with her blow spout! We visited ancient cave painting/petroglyph sites, through tours and some on our own. San Xavier mission is a nice trip on a recently paved road; the small traditional community is charming. A panga ride to Isle Coronado brought us up close to sea lions and dolphins, and included a stop on a sandy beach surrounding turquoise water! And hiking Tabor Canyon was challenging and fascinating. The food was so good that I'm ashamed to say I gained weight. Orlando's Restaurant in Loreto is a favorite of northerners for good reason--every meal was delicious. A couple blocks past Orlando's is Almejas Concho--they serve the best fish tacos and clam gratin (cheesy "chocolate" clams). We loved the churros at the Sunday farmer's market, and were able to stock up on all kinds of produce for home cooking. Del Borracho's is good for clam chowder on Fridays. A car is necessary for exploring; we got a good deal at Alamo's in town. Be aware that you must buy Mexican insurance. We saved on some tours by participating in a time-share presentation; worth our time! And finally, it IS Mexico, so take precautions with water, food and driving. Have FUN!
