Explore Tidepools Below Our Glamorous La Jolla Oceanfront

We adore our chic, 4400sq.ft. contemporary beach house right on the ocean with the waves breaking just a few feet away. And the four king bed bedrooms plus one queen Duxiana bedroom which accommodate ten, plus the Roche Bobois sleeper sofa accommodates an additional two people. All bedrooms are so pretty, so comfortable and so private that you will think you are at a five star resort. Some folk tell us they just could not leave the house, it was so lovely. This home sits right out on the bluffs, just feet from the tide pools below. (tide pools when the tide is out, of course) If you choose to stay home and spend the day on one of the four outdoor patios (most with patio sets and umbrellas), you feel as if you are right out on the ocean in a ship. It's nice that you can stroll into the kitchen so easily to make yourself a St. Germain pear martini or a good glass of Earl Grey iced tea without summoning a waiter.
This house has a small park beside it, which gives your eyes a natural panorama to glance over--instead of another house impacting and impeding your views. You get a full 180 degrees of ocean from most of the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. You can be preparing a paella in the kitchen facing the ocean, watching your boss fall off her windsurfer or admiring your grandson surfing for the first time. You might even get to know individual pelicans from the flock swooping past in military formation twice a day. One used to be able to harvest lobsters right below in the rocks -- but now, even if you were to get the appropriate license, you have to go elsewhere to catch your lobsters -- all of this shore is now a protected environment. Perhaps this is good for what we call 'our' beach - the surfing break which is just outside used to be called the 'Monkey break' because we used to have giant sculptures of neanderthal men on the house - but they've moved up to our house in Nevada.
The rooms are large enough for small children to share their parents' rooms but we can't provide beds for them. Honestly, the house is so large with so many features it takes us many, many hours just to look after the beds and bed linens that we already provide. .
Most of the bedrooms have a flat screen television, WiFi and ample storage. Each of the 6.5 bathrooms is equipped with a good-size shower but only the master bath has the fabulous egg-shaped bathtub and its own television. Next year we are putting in a sauna and a Japanese soaking tub.
The house has two fireplaces and many different areas of comfortable seating. The joy of this house is that it mixes elegant living with carefree enjoyment. People tell us the furnishings are spectacular, but you must put one of the throws underneath a dog,: it's part of the pleasure of a beach house furnished by someone else to ooh and aah over the shells and the artwork and the dishes and the goblets (not to mention the white walnut desk crafted with stainless steel by artist Jason Wood.
The kitchen - with stainless steel, white Caesarstone counters, and Bulthaup German cabinetry -- has a Gagganau 36' interior rotisserie oven, six Sub-Zero refrigeration units including wine storage, freezer drawer, and a special 'chocolate drawer'. The kitchen is equipped with handmade dishes plus other dishes, some formal china and silver, every possible food preparation gadget, an interior grill, and steel lined drawers with pegs for preserving the dishes.
Two cars fit in the driveway. You can get down to the beach just outside the house to kayak or windsurf (the pathway is beside the house leading out of the public park -- please note that you CANNOT access the beach by trampling on the fragile cliff vegetation and we only take a deposit from you to make sure that no child or teenager is allowed to tread on the plants on the cliff, it takes about ten years to grow back).

This house has to be one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. There are so many things to do and see within the area but the house is so nice that you will just want to sit on your porch and watch the ocean and the sunsets every night. The house itself is spectacular and the location can simply not be beaten -- right on the ocean where you can watch the sea lions, surfers, and birds -- or take the provided kayaks or surfboard out yourself. We had an incredible experience and would highly recommend this place for anyone who is in need of a wonderful vacation and stay.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My in laws, my mom and dad, my brothers and my sister, and my husband and I spent a week at this jaw-droppingly beautiful house. None of us wanted to ever leave. Everything was true in the VRBO ad but more so, more fantastic and awesome. We DID go tide pooling in front of the house and I did watch my ridiculous brother falling off his surfboard while I was cooking. None of us had ever seen anything of this quality before but we didn't waste a moment of the delight. I can only say, don't miss this een if you have to borrow the cash.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1994
About the owner: We lived far away. We saw this house and both of us said, 'This is the perfect goal for us.' It took a couple of years after that and then we bought the house and, really and truly, lived happily ever after. We do have our main home still far far away but we spend enough time in this beloved oceanfront to keep our happiness intact. We like to share this utterly joyous house with others.
Why the Owner Chose Bird Rock:
We're closer to the waves, we think, in this area of La Jolla; it's just below the bluffs. It feels so personal. Where else can you drop your kayak into the surf and paddle away for half an hour and then come back for hot chocolate? (Note: this is not a namby-pamby beach; you have to scramble down to it on the surfers' path.)
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We can have half a dozen rambunctious grandchildren racing around while we have a business meeting in the front room. The house is just so adaptable. And...where else can you have dinner on the patio staring into the waves and let the sunset make you young again? We have dinner parties outside while we barbecue roast lamb and we can share the sunsets with all of those we love. We love our neighbors of so many years and you will find ten or fifteen of them on a Friday night gathering under the torrey pine outside our house for an hour to hang out together.
