'Back to Earth Sanctuary' Cottage Bordering Green Mountains
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Relax in one of the first homes in the east to be insulated with sheep's wool! Back to Earth Sanctuary's vacation cottage is nestled on the edge of Vermont's Green Mountains. The cottage is a real home - a 1930's building that we began to renovate in 2010. It has two stories. Upstairs, you'll find two bedrooms and a new bathroom with a shower. Downstairs, there is a full kitchen (with a large sliding glass door and wonderful view of the mountains), living room, dining room with a soapstone wood stove, and bathroom with high efficiency clothes washer and an old fashioned bathtub.
Back to Earth Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary with horses, chickens, and sometimes sheep. The sanctuary offers workshops in natural and leading edge horse care and training. It is an active property - with horse training happening almost every day as well as workshops happening multiple times per month. The owners live on the farm section of the property which is behind the vacation cottage.
The vacation cottage is situated next to the road (a rural dirt road) with old maple trees out front and a nice backyard. It has its own section of the property, and is separated from the rest of the farm by hedgerows, trees, and fences.
If you'd like to explore the local area, you'll find plenty of hiking and cross country skiing opportunities in the nearby Green Mountain National Forest. The village of Brandon is just seven miles away and host to an amazing French restaurant and bakery. Middlebury is 20 miles away and has great shopping, restaurants, bakeries, and a vibrant natural/specialty food coop.
The local food movement is thriving here in Vermont! Once you arrive at the cottage, you'll find a list of restaurants, grocery stores, and farmers' markets who all source from local farms. Vermont is also on the cutting edge of developing green energy alternatives at a statewide level.
We welcome well-behaved dogs. This cottage is a great match for anyone wanting a rural adventure with minimal services in Vermont!
The cottage is available for rental between May 25th, 2013 and September 15th, 2013.

Convenient to Green Mountain hiking trails, Lake Dunsmore and the fun towns of Middlebury and Brandon, Wild Apple Farm Cottage was a cozy homebase for a lovely late summer family vacation/long wedding weekend. The sheep's wool beds are extremely comfortable and having the horses, chickens and sheep greet us each morning couldn't have been more picturesque. The owner was very helpful and answered my long list of questions promptly and fully. The cottage, though rustic, does have high-speed internet with wi-fi, an ipod speaker hook-up and plenty of organic/natural toiletries and products, just in case you forget your bug spray or sunblock. There is a TV but no reception although I think there is a DVD player - I'm not sure because we spent our days out enjoying VT and our evenings having long family dinners with plenty of wine. Rustic does mean, however, that the kitchen does not have a dishwasher so be prepared to hand-wash all your dishes during your stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

My partner and I just returned from a two-week stay at Wild Apple Farm Cottage. We had a wonderful time. The cottage itself is very comfortable, with a beautiful view of the Green Mountains out back; it's extremely tranquil and quiet, yet close to Middlebury, Lake Dunmore, and excellent hiking, including some very lovely and very underused trails close by (in the Dunmore/Moosalamoo area as well as near the Brandon Gap, a five-minute drive from the cottage). The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating. If you're looking for a restorative Vermont retreat, this is it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We stayed at this wonderful cottage for 5 quiet and enjoyable days. The place was just perfect for us (a couple + one big dog), beautifully and warmly decorated. The big yard was a plus for our dog. It is located on a very quiet street, and there are some great fun hikes just a couple of minutes away. Great place to do some serious road biking too.Did you find this review helpful? This is our second time in this lovely, relaxed farm cottage. I'm sitting here right now, gazing out at the hills, across the meadow, a lovely slope to the right. Even though the grass is green in this strange winter, it snowed while driving in last night. Ahhh, Vermont. The accommodations are perfect -- comfortable bed (have only tried one), two bathrooms (always welcome; one with shower, one with old fashioned tub), great well-equipped kitchen, flawless wifi... and a very responsive property manager (a switch on the water heater simply needed to be flipped from "vacation" to "they're here" mode). The house heats up instantly with the Rinnai propane heater; the wood stove draws perfectly and more than takes off any remaining chill. The house is full of light -- and life -- with a terrific collection of books for the readers among you. I'd say "book it" but please don't too often as we want to come back :).Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed for a long weekend, and had a wonderful, relaxing time. We found everything we needed, and our dog enjoyed tearing around the paddocks. The house is very comfortable and cozy, and in such a beautiful spot, with views of mountains from every window. Everything was clean and well-maintained, and very easy to use. We look forward to returning, perhaps to see the apple trees in fruit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We stayed for five nights over the first week in January 2012. The house really was perfect and had every item we could possibly need far exceeding our expectations. The renovations on the house and property are to be admired and the owners have done a great job creating a comfortable environment. The kitchen was a pleasure to prepare meals in, the washrooms are fully renovated and the beds are comfortable. There was plenty of wood available and the stove was fun to operate and capable of heating the entire house throughout the day. The immediate area is farmland so it is a very private location with lots of open areas and fantastic views of the green mountains. The corals were perfect for playing with the dog and there is a nice walk to the back of the property that we did each morning. There are other dog friendly hikes in the area and the town of Brandon is not too far away. We really enjoyed our time at the farm and definitely hope to stay again someday.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to your next visit! -Kinna and Gene

About the owner: Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone are involved with natural building as well as the natural care and training of animals (they have 4 horses and 2 border collies).
Why the Owner Chose Brandon:
Back to Earth Sanctuary is a full time residence for us. We love the area and feel inspired by the mountains that are just behind our sanctuary. We are also excited by all the work Vermont is doing to support the local food movement and green energy alternatives.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Back to Earth Sanctuary is on the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest. There are hiking trails to explore, lakes to swim in, and cross country skiing in the winter. You can also enjoy seasonal foods -- such as blueberries to pick in early August, apples (from the 16 mature apple trees on the property) to sample in the fall, and maple syrup to taste in early spring!
