Crofton cottage description
Escape to your own magical seaside cottage on beautiful Vancouver Island. “Gabled Cottage” is a newly built 3100 sq ft beach front home in historic Crofton. Built on “The Point”, a former rum runner’s haven, Gabled Cottage overlooks the Salish Sea, Salt Spring and Thetis Islands and the majestic snow –capped mountains across the Straights of Georgia on the mainland.
Inspired by their love of anything English, the owners modeled the cottage after an English Country home. Open the front door of the cottage and walk into the reception hall and let your gaze take you past the Great Room, past the terrace and out to the Salish Sea.
Graced with old world furnishings, the elegant marbled three sided gas fireplace holds court in the Great Room. The Great Room is just the place to curl up in front of the fireplace and catch up on your reading.
The stainless steel 6 burner commercial gas range with convection oven plays centre stage in the kitchen The black granite counter tops, encrusted with red garnets, offers a counterpoint to the white hand cut marble subway tiles completing the European look. The kitchen is complete with dishwasher, microwave, pots and pans and is well stocked with homemade jams and jellies, flour, sugar, coffee and tea. If you wish we can have fresh local milk and local free range eggs waiting for you.
Each of the three guest rooms radiates romantic country elegance and offers serene vistas of either the beautiful gardens or vast ocean views. The master bedroom suite has French doors leading out to the covered terrace. The view from the windows overlooks the beautiful sea views. The bedroom has a four poster queen size bed. The en-suite boasts a two person corner soaker tub, over sized shower and his and her sinks.
The two other bedrooms are in a separate and very private wing and share a common bathroom complete with a deep soaker tub and shower.
The huge loft upstairs is ideal for a separate media room or an extra bed room. It has two twin size beds and a game table. The loft also has as a two piece bathroom and closet.
Walk through the gardens and you will end up at Fantasy Cottage where you can relax on the front porch. If it's raining go inside and turn on the electric fireplace. You can hear the rain on the roof. The loft inside, complete with a ladder is a great place to entertain the grand kids. Continue your walk into the rose garden. Depending on the time of year, you can pick yourself a bouquet of herbs for your dinner. Keep walking and you'll discover the secret pathway to the private beach. If the tide is out treat yourself to a long walk on the beach. You can turn right and go all the way to Camp Qwanoes or go the other way to the village.
When you get back to the gardens open the gate and go into the Foxglove Community Gardens and Culinary School. Plan your getaway at the right time and you'll receive a discount on the cooking classes. There's French, Mexican, Italian, Korean and even bread making classes. Check out the Weekend Culinary Getaway package also offered at Gabled Cottage listed futher on in amenities. Chef Zac will take you on a culinary tour of wineries, cheese makers and farm markets then enjoy the hands on cooking classes when you return.
Mornings - early risers can enjoy their first cup of coffee or tea from the covered slate terrace as they take in the breath taking sunrise. The sights and sounds of the world awakening are not to be missed. The pale sky fills with colours as the sun slowly rises over Salt Spring creating beautiful reflections on the water. The gulls come alive and start calling each other. Birds fill the air with their calls as they dart about looking for breakfast. If you’re quiet perhaps a sea otter will scamper past on his way to the pond for a morning bath. The ducks that have been sleeping near the shore fly overhead to land in the pond. Perhaps a doe with her fawn will saunter by on their way to get their breakfast in the rose garden next door. Your day has started in this peaceful paradise.
End your day in the same place with a glass of your favourite wine and watch the sun set over Mount Brenton. Again, the sky is filled with crimsons, pinks and purples. The snow covered peaks on the mainland are tinged with pinks and look like a strawberry snow cone. The water reflects the sky and is marbled with colours. All of a sudden the air becomes still, the birds are quiet and the gulls are sitting on the dock before you. It’s that magic time when the world is saying good night and the peaceful twilight turns into night.
Things To Do and Places To Go.
A must do is the Chemainus Dinner Theater. They feature Broadway plays and musicals and the food is not to be missed.
Duncan, the “City of Totems” is 10 minutes away in the other direction along back country roads. Visit downtown and take in “Galloways Rare Books and Wine Bar”, then off to do some antiquing and shopping for shoes at “Cardino’s”. Stop by “Pot’s and Paraphernalia” for all the kitchen, bed and bathrooms goodies. Then it “Just Jakes Restaurant and Brew Pub” for a much needed lunch or dinner. There is the Coast Salish Native museum which is a very interesting stop. If you like, take in the casino for an exciting time.
Victoria, a short 45 minute drive south is the capital of British Columbia and is also the home of the world famous Empress Hotel and the Parliament Building. Butchart Gardens is also a must.
Back home travel north 3 hours and you are at Mount Washington, voted the best skiing in BC by those in the know.
Hop on the ferry that travels back and forth by your front door. It's at the Crofton dock just down around the corner. It's just a short 20 minute ferry ride and you’re on Salt Spring Island, home of the rich and famous. Ganges has the Saturday Market and Mouat’s Department Store and restaurants for every ones taste.
This island is a great place to discover your own private Paradise!

- Plan a weekend culinary getaway. Arriving on Friday evening you're greeted by the chef and great cocktails and appetizers followed by a three course dinner in front of the fireplace. Saturday, after breakfast you're off to tour the food and wine producers in the valley and purchasing your ingredients for dinner that night. Then after dinner back to the house for port wine in front of the fire place. Sunday after breakfast, a short cooking class then pack your bags for home. All at a very affordable fee. This is a beautiful house right on the bay. We could watch the ferry to Salt Spring Island as it went back and forth during the day. There was a mother deer and her two fawns in the yard daily. Ms. Nancy was wonderful to work with before and during our stay. The house has all the amenities you need for a relaxing stay. Our group of six had plenty of room. It is well situated for traveling around the area towns. We motored to Salt Spring Island, Chemainus, Duncan, Ladysmith, Parksville, Qualicam Beach and out to Port Albernie during the days we were there. We even saw the goats on the roof at Coombs and visited the village market on Wednesday at Chemainus (don't miss the murals). There is a little store in town that has everything you need. We ate at many area restaurants including Craig Street Brewery(Duncan), Shipyard(Genoa Bay), Riverwalk Café(Duncan), Tree House (Salt Spring Island) and Beach Hut(-Parksville). They were all good. At Salt Spring Island we visited a winery and the farm producing goat cheese. The location of the house on the island offers many opportunities to explore the area attractions. Thanks again Ms. Nancy, it was a pleasure!

My family spent my mom's 60th birthday in this beautiful location and would highly recommend staying in Nancy and Burt's cottage. The pictures do not do enough justice to the beauty of the location and setting of the house. The home itself is very cozy, with all the modern conveniences, comfortable bedrooms, cable TV and internet, a wonderful fireplace that invites you to curl up with a book. I almost wished that the weather wasn't so nice while we were there so we could have a valid excuse to stay home all day! Nancy is a sweetheart who is very accommodating, and Burt was her right hand man who was quick to deliver anything we needed, including a blender for making smoothies. This is the perfect place to spend a family vacation in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.

Our party of 8 women celebrating a 50th birthday could not have been better. Your generosity and hospitality made this an exceptional stay. When we arrived to find the goodies and such a beautifully appointed home that welcomed us with such warmth and ambiance we were over the moon. The setting is sublime overlooking the water, we loved listening to the seals barking off in the distance and watching the eagles soar overhead. We have promised each other to do this again, as often as we can! I cannot recommend this haven enough!!!!

Super clean, spacious, amazing oceanfront view, nicely decorated. The owners were punctual and oriented us to the place. They had left us homemade muffins, wine, and other goodies. All appliances ( plates, cutleries, bbq, etc.) available and ready to be used. The owners were very sweet. We asked for a DVD player, and they provided us one within a couple of hours. We had a fabulous time during our stay at this accomodation and highly reccommed it.

Owner response: Thank you for the great review. You were our first house guests and were just amazing even with the plumbing problems. The home was as beautiful when you left it as when you arrived. Even the dishes were done and the beds were made. To top it all off you left us a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates. We sincerely hope lthat you will come back often and we promise, no plumbing problems. Have a great New Year, Nancy and Burt

About the owner: Gabled Cottage was created by two very different people with different passions. Gardening and food are my passions with interior design a close third. I find it difficult to narrow down my interests. I was born in San Francisco when S F was a great and safe place to grow up. As youngsters, we could take the street cars all over the city and our parents wouldn't worry. My interest in gardening came from the many trips to Golden Gate Park where flowers and trees were placed just so to show off their perfection. Julia Child inspired my passion for cooking. I watched her first cooking series on PBS in S F. Her easy relaxed manner when she dropped the chicken on the floor told me she is just like me. My love of interior design was sparked by visiting the de Young Museum. They had room displays and even as a child of 5 or 6, I was fascinated. Later on at the ripe old age of 9, my teacher had us build a stage set out of a shoe box. I built an entrance hall complete with chandelier. I even wallpapered the walls in striped paper I cut out of a magazine. It was a real work of art. Gable Cottage is just an extension of what I am and what I love to do. The interior is designed to reflect my love of warm, comfortable places welcoming you to curl up, read a book or just watch the world go by outside. The kitchen is designed to welcome noted chefs conducting cooking classes or the casual cook preparing a lovely meal for their guests. The gardens, as any gardener will tell you, will never be finished. The gardens are always evolving with ponds, hidden gardens, and walkways. My business partner was born in Sweden and is the builder of Gabled Cottage. It was his idea to create such a remarkable place. The ceilings are all hand crafted and took over 3 months to complete. Wainscoting is throughout the house. Kitchen is completely hand crafted including the marble tile and range hood. He spent over two years completing Gabled Cottage. It's a work of art and it shows in every detail.
Why the Owner Chose Crofton:
VIEWS, VIEWS, VIEWS and MORE VIEWS.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Weekend culinary getaway starts Friday afternoon when guests arrive at Gabled Cottage for martinis and appetizers presented by Chef Zac Zorisky, then followed by his beautiful dinner. Saturday you will tour the farm markets, cheese and wineries shopping for your dinner. After lunch in town you returen to start your hand-on cooking class in the Foxglove Culinary School barn. Sunday awake to the great breakfast, followed by another shorter hands-on cooking class. Classes are limited to 6 guests. The focus is on local, seasonal ingredients and can be prepared at home. Food allergies can be accommodated. Cowichan Valley is noted for its abundance of wineries, cheeses, sausages, and produce. Cowichan Bay is the quintessential sea side village including a great museum dedicated to wooden boats and local sea life. You can plan a deep sea fishing trip too! Great restaurants. Rock Cod Cafe has great fish and chips. All home made and local food. Tillies Cheese Factory and a great bakery and ice cream are all there. Climb Maple Mountain. It's just up the street from the house and a great hike. Go wine tasting at all the local wineries. One even has a great bakery with goodies that are all homemade. Saturday is a great day to hop on the ferry and go to Salt Spring Island. Then drive to Ganges for a great Saturday market during the season. Hop Nob with the rich and famous. Lots of movie stars have summer homes there and if you’re in luck you can see them. Great shopping too! Mouat’s is the name there. You can buy hardware for your boat, or beautiful hand knit sweaters for yourself and everything in-between. Drive around the island and explore the Lavender farms. Salt Spring is famous for its lamb too. Some of the pubs offer great lamb bar-b-ques. Restaurants abound and some have great views of the harbours. One of the favourite past-times is just sitting on your terrace and watching the boat traffic go by. A cold beer or glass of wine in hand is perfect.
