Come to “Zelma’s Place” and discover a bit of historical Rockport. New last year to the vacationer’s rental market, it was purchased by Zelma and L.M. Draper of Corpus Christi, Texas, in the late 50s and retains the peaceful and classic charm of that time. Completely upgraded, this immaculately maintained home provides comfort and relaxation for our guests.
Grocery shopping, medical and banking services, as well as good restaurants, are within a half mile of 'Zelma's Place'...a GREAT location for Winter Texans!
The kitchen/dining area incorporates a massive oak bar, removed and preserved during renovation of the historic Nueces Hotel in Corpus in the late 1950s. Many family and friends have talked of good times and made lasting memories sitting around the bar. Antique metal furniture from the 1920s furnishes the master bedroom. Another bedroom named “Willie’s Room” consists of antique western dresser and oak twin beds adorned with bandana spreads and pillows. The bright and cheery third bedroom has all new furnishings. All the bedrooms have new bedspreads, linens and pillows. Bedrooms have new mattresses and are covered with memory foam for extra comfort. The living room provides plenty of seating area for enjoying television or watching one of the DVDs provided for our guests. High speed internet allows you to check email and surf the Web. Also provided are cards, dominoes, poker chips, games and puzzles found in the back bedroom.
Zelma, a former Homemaking teacher, loved to cook and fed her friends and family seafood caught off the old Copano Bridge or in Aransas Bay. Therefore, the kitchen is fully equipped with whatever you would need to fix a snack or a gourmet meal. Or, you may want to grill your steak or seafood on the patio using the original brick wood-burning pit or the charcoal grill and dine on the picnic table under the huge River Ash tree in the back yard. In the evening, enjoy the sea breeze on the front porch and watch the pelicans, roseate spoonbills, herons, and many other native sea birds return to nearby Connie Hagar Sanctuary.
'Zelma’s Place” is ideally located for accessing local amenities and only a block from the water’s edge of Little Bay and steps away from a popular waterfront restaurant. There is hardly a need for a car as it's close enough to walk or bike to the unique downtown shops, marina, Rockport beach, banks and great eating spots.
Perfect lodging for pleasure fisherman and participants in tournaments.
Visitors to other Rockport and Fulton events held during the year are welcome to come and stay as our guest. Come and enjoy the fun!
Keywords: Beach House; Convenient to shops, bay and marina...A classic cottage and a haven for the 'laid back and relaxed'. Invited to be on Rockport's Historical Tour of Homes.
Combines the old with the new in furnishings and decor.
The sound of the ocean waves, the setting sun across the ocean, and a drink in hand, this was the life for us!
The beach house was roomy, with more than enough space for two of us (it could have easily accommodated 6 more bears). The Bear and his new wife stayed at Zelma's place for their honeymoon. This house is amazing, perfect to relax and unwind. We were truly fortunate because the new bride always felt that she needed to do something, but Zelma's place beckoned her to sleep in and take it easy. After the second day we were soothed into a state of honeymoon bliss.
The bedrooms were roomy, with comfortable, inviting beds. We loved the living room and the outdoor hammock and porch. The kitchen had lots of plates, cups, accessories and even a blender which made daiquiris a breeze. After our days on the beach, we came back to our great entertaining house, where we had fun sitting outside on the beautiful porch, playing one of the many games. We enjoyed watching television on a big flat screen with loads of channels.
Zelma's place is walking distance from tons of wonderful Rockport shopping and a skip from the beach. We went to the beach every day where the bear taught his new wife to fly a kite! We saw dolphins jumping, pelicans soaring, and fisherman casting their lines into the ocean. We passed the hours at many of the close restaurants and local bars. The lady bear loved running along the clean, sandy beach and wading in the shallow waters. This was the perfect getaway.
Thank you for allowing us to stay at your amazing house, we will definitely stay again!

Year Purchased: 1958
About the owner: My parents bought the little “beach house” in 1958 in order that my mother could visit her siblings and stay close to her Rockport roots. Born in 1905, she and her five sisters grew up in Sparks Colony, a nearby settlement, where her father was a teacher and lay minister. Zelma left the Texas coast in the 1920s to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. For many years, while earning her degree during summers from Texas State Teachers’ College in San Marcos, Texas, she taught in many one and two-room schools in South Texas. Prior to WW II, she met and married a Navy doctor and settled in Corpus Christi, Texas. Both my parents loved the water and were avid fishermen. Nothing brought them more pleasure than to share the “Rockport experience” with others. For many years, friends and family have supported the acclaimed July 4th Art Festival and gathered that evening on the front porch to watch the spectacular firework display. Now five generations have been a part of that experience and carried on the tradition. Some have loved it enough to spend their honeymoon at 'Zelma's Place'.
My husband, Frank (Buz), and I live in East Texas where I have retired from public school work as a speech pathologist and counselor. My family spent many summers with my mother in Corpus and her place in Rockport. My father passed away many years ago and my mother lived to be 103 years of age. Three years later, we know she would be pleased with 'Zelma's Place'. Always with a smile on her face and with a loving heart, she would welcome new friends to her special spot by the bay.
Why the Owner Chose Rockport: We have kept our second home because of all the fun activities to do in the Rockport/Fulton area. Many of those include: visiting the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge; the Fulton Mansion; the Big Tree (1000+ year old tree) at Goose Island State Park; Rockport Center for the Arts; and the Birding and Nature Trails, plus the Whooping Crane Boat Cruise from November to March.
Annual Festivals and events abound in the area. Some of which are: the Gospel Music Festival in January; Fulton's Oysterfest and Whooping Crane Strut Run & Walk in March; the Herb Festival and the Nautical Flea Market in April; the Rockport Festival of Wines in May; Salty Dog Fishing Tournament in June; Rockport Art Festival and Fireworks Display and Rockport Offshore Challenge Fishing Tournament in July; Hummer/Bird Celebration in September; and the Rockport Seafair in October.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Rockport is a 'state of mind' and those who have experienced it's charm will be drawn back again and again.
