Cozy Mountain Cabin Getaway

Kick back on the deck of this mountain cabin and sip your morning coffee while taking in the majestic views of Slate Mountain. Or, watch for falling stars and search for constellations free of light and smog polution. The unobstructed views of the night sky are tremendous! You may plan your rock climbing trek or fishing expedition up the Tule River while sitting at the dining table. The comfortable couches are perfect to curl up with a novel in front of a fire as snow falls around this peaceful cabin before you head out for a cross-country ski or sledding outing with the kids.
You will love the five-minute walk to the Camp Nelson general store for an ice cream, a Nelson Burger from Mo's Diner or the whole family can travel a half mile to the Pierpoint General Store and Restaurant for a meal that tastes like it was cooked at home.
This perfectly located cabin is ideal for peaceful time away from cell phones, computers and the hustle and bustle of everyday life or merely a foray into the High Sierras to see the giant redwoods in the National Forest and the Trail of 100 Giants
You can easily visit Sequoia and Kings Canyon on a day trip. However, once you are here you will appreciate the lack of tourists, tourist buses, and the solitude that comes with our quiet hamlet located in the Sequoia National Monument south of Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

First I'd like to say the description is completely accurate, this is a sparkling clean, well cared for cabin. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare a full Christmas Dinner. The breakfast bar space doubles as a spacious island. We had the unusual experience of getting snowed in. It was odd for us and I wondered if there would be enough to occupy us. We were able to walk to 'town' and and Mo's Restaurant, more than enough to keep my kids busy. They were able to use the sled to slide down a big hill behind Nelson's Meadow. All three had a lot of fun and met and shared cocoa with some new friends. I can recommend this cabin without reservation. Thank you very much Lisa! All in all this was a lovely place to spend Christmas Week and we would love to be able to go again next year.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+.

This trip was a surprise trip for our wives, they thought we would be camping for a week at a nearby campground. After a couple of days camping, we told our wives we needed to go into Porterville to get supplies. As we returned to Camp Nelson, we pulled into the cabin driveway, the ladies were shocked and relieved. Each evening around 5:00 we would walk a short distance into town and see deer all around us-wiyhin feet from us. Can't wait to go back, Thank you Lisa!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

I have been to the High Sierras many times, but this was one of the most memorable trips. The cabin was as cozy as touted, but we came for the hiking - and it was unforgetable! I have visited the Freeman Trail, as well as, the Trail of Hundred Giants (101 now, says our Newfie). But we had never seen the view from Dome Rock or Needles Lookout. We also saw the breath-taking Nobe Young Falls, and the fifth largest tree in the world, the Stagg. It would have been a dream if not for an unfortunate meeting with some wasps (to which I discovered I am allergic). We'll be back, and next time with an epi-pen!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+.

The area of Camp Nelson is a small, cozy community in a valley surrounded by the rugged High Sierra's and is very beautiful. Lots of pines, cedars and oak trees. There is not a lot to do there but go on local hikes as most sightseeing places of Sequoia are around a 3 - 4 hour drive. The exterior of the cabin itself was not what we expected in terms of the photos we saw online. The driveway is very rutted and difficult to maneuver unless you have a high profile vehicle. The decking and exterior wood of the cabin is in bad need of repair and paint, as is the foundation of the cabin which was evident by the warped floors inside the house. Although there is beauty all around, it is difficult to see if you are sitting on the front deck because the view is obscured by trees in the yard and many low hanging wires. The interior of the cabin is decorated in warm country style furniture and nick-nacks with a stone fireplace. The online photos of the inside of the cabin were more accurate than the outside and we enjoyed the coziness of the living room and dining room. The bathroom with the claw foot tub has had some water damage with part of the wall removed showing black mold which was a concern to us. The linoleum under the tub was also badly stained with possible mold underneath. We felt the rental fees were overpriced for what you get. Although we would not return, if you don't mind some of our concerns, this may be for you. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves meeting some of the locals and walking the neighborhood streets. There is a meadow nearby which is fenced and is mowed and watered daily. Dozens of deer hang out in the mornings and evenings making walks well worthwhile.Recommended for: Sightseeing.
Owner response: As a Certified EPA Renovator, there is NOT black mold growing in the bathroom. The discoloration of the vinyl in the bathroom is due to the vinyl glue having gotten wet from a leak we immediately remediated. We would never subject any guest to a hazardous situation. The deck is four years old and as it is south facing, the elements are quite harsh on the wood, especially this past dry winter and hot summer. It is scheduled to be treated this fall. While our cozy cabin is not a house, its age provides a charm that our guests have enjoyed and complimented for many years.

We went Easter weekend, with our 2 daughters (10 and 14) and dog. Great yard for dog to run around, and the scene from the deck looking out to the mountains in the distance is great. Excellent service too: The BBQ was out of gas, but they delivered a new one within 20 minutes. It was also fun to drive down the mountain and spend a day hanging out on the river. We stayed 3 nights and neither kid even asked to turn on the TV or complained about not having cell/internet service the entire time. Highly recommend this cabin.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners.
Owner response: Mathew, My kids are also 10 and 14. I find it amazing that they are able to put down their electroincs and never complain. It is good to hear you had the same experience. Come again soon! Lisa

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1990
About the owner: Our family started in the rental business in 1974 in Bakersfield, California. It is our passion and pride to offer quality properties to our community and the communities we become a part of. We have expanded to the Central Coast and Sequoias. As owners that are hands on, we are proud of each unique property we offer to others to enjoy for a few days or make their home. As the second generation I am proud to carry on my dad's vision and dreams for our properties.
Why the Owner Chose Camp Nelson:
My dad had always dreamed of having a place in the mountains to fish and be amongst the trees. He wanted something to pass on to his family so he purchased this cabin in 1990. He loves that we are able to share it with others since he can't spend the time there he would like. He relishes in the great feedback from people that appreciate our property and enjoys getting to meet guests when he is around.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Our cabin is not a house, a mansion or a hotel, but a quaint and cozy preserved cabin that has been well loved and maintained. The best part? Cell Phones do not work in the mountains and we do not have internet service. This is truly a time away from all the hectic electronics of today's world. I can relax and not feel tied to work.
