First I'd like to say the description is completely accurate, this is a sparkling clean, well cared for cabin. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare a full Christmas Dinner. The breakfast bar space doubles as a spacious island. We had the unusual experience of getting snowed in. It was odd for us and I wondered if there would be enough to occupy us. We were able to walk to 'town' and and Mo's Restaurant, more than enough to keep my kids busy. They were able to use the sled to slide down a big hill behind Nelson's Meadow. All three had a lot of fun and met and shared cocoa with some new friends. I can recommend this cabin without reservation. Thank you very much Lisa! All in all this was a lovely place to spend Christmas Week and we would love to be able to go again next year.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, sightseeing.

I have been to the High Sierras many times, but this was one of the most memorable trips. The cabin was as cozy as touted, but we came for the hiking - and it was unforgetable! I have visited the Freeman Trail, as well as, the Trail of Hundred Giants (101 now, says our Newfie). But we had never seen the view from Dome Rock or Needles Lookout. We also saw the breath-taking Nobe Young Falls, and the fifth largest tree in the world, the Stagg. It would have been a dream if not for an unfortunate meeting with some wasps (to which I discovered I am allergic). We'll be back, and next time with an epi-pen!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This trip was a surprise trip for our wives, they thought we would be camping for a week at a nearby campground. After a couple of days camping, we told our wives we needed to go into Porterville to get supplies. As we returned to Camp Nelson, we pulled into the cabin driveway, the ladies were shocked and relieved. Each evening around 5:00 we would walk a short distance into town and see deer all around us-wiyhin feet from us. Can't wait to go back, Thank you Lisa!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Cabin in the Sequoia's

The area of Camp Nelson is a small, cozy community in a valley surrounded by the rugged High Sierra's and is very beautiful. Lots of pines, cedars and oak trees. There is not a lot to do there but go on local hikes as most sightseeing places of Sequoia are around a 3 - 4 hour drive. The exterior of the cabin itself was not what we expected in terms of the photos we saw online. The driveway is very rutted and difficult to maneuver unless you have a high profile vehicle. The decking and exterior wood of the cabin is in bad need of repair and paint, as is the foundation of the cabin which was evident by the warped floors inside the house. Although there is beauty all around, it is difficult to see if you are sitting on the front deck because the view is obscured by trees in the yard and many low hanging wires. The interior of the cabin is decorated in warm country style furniture and nick-nacks with a stone fireplace. The online photos of the inside of the cabin were more accurate than the outside and we enjoyed the coziness of the living room and dining room. The bathroom with the claw foot tub has had some water damage with part of the wall removed showing black mold which was a concern to us. The linoleum under the tub was also badly stained with possible mold underneath. We felt the rental fees were overpriced for what you get. Although we would not return, if you don't mind some of our concerns, this may be for you. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves meeting some of the locals and walking the neighborhood streets. There is a meadow nearby which is fenced and is mowed and watered daily. Dozens of deer hang out in the mornings and evenings making walks well worthwhile.Recommended for: Sightseeing
Owner response: As a Certified EPA Renovator, there is NOT black mold growing in the bathroom. The discoloration of the vinyl in the bathroom is due to the vinyl glue having gotten wet from a leak we immediately remediated. We would never subject any guest to a hazardous situation. The deck is four years old and as it is south facing, the elements are quite harsh on the wood, especially this past dry winter and hot summer. It is scheduled to be treated this fall. While our cozy cabin is not a house, its age provides a charm that our guests have enjoyed and complimented for many years.

We found the cabin clean and the beds comfortable, two things that our important for us. The exterior needs attention, but that is irrelevant. The only complaint is the Direct TV needed to be fixed, and this cabin is for a small family, which was fine for us because we only took our two small grandsons.Recommended for: Families with young children
Owner response: Mary Jane, I apologize about the Direct Tv. That has been an ongoing issue for us and is so diffiult to resolve being up in the mountains. Thank you for your patience and we have had DirectTv out to remedy the problem.

My family and I spent three nights in this comfortable and beautiful cabin. The location is very convenient and we didn't have much trouble finding the cabin. Travelling with an one-year old, the last thing we wanted was to get lost. The cabin was clean and cozy, and it's well equipped. We like hiking, so the washer and dryer came in handy. With four adults and one toddler, we also loved the fact that there were two restrooms. All in all it's a very good experience for us. It's just so nice and relaxing to hike a bit during the day, then have afternoon tea on the deck, and finally sit around a wood stove at the end of the day. So, thank you very much, Lisa!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our stay @ Lisa's cabin in Camp Nelson could not have been better. We were absolutely delighted with the accomodations and all that it offered. The sights and sounds of being in the mountains added to the overall experience, and having a cozy comfortable home to come back to after taxing hiking adventures was a wonderful blessing. Our two teenagers loved having thier seperate comfortable beds and loved the fact that multiple adventures were waiting in the mouintains right outside the door. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Joe and Sharon, I really enjoyed speaking with both of you as we ironed out the details of your stay. It felt like you were my cousins coming for a visit! You are always welcome out here and send me some more of those wonderfully written emails:) Lisa

My husband and I spent four nights at this cozy cabin in Camp Nelson and were very pleased to be there! The cabin is comfortably and tastefully furnished and well-maintained, and is spacious and well arranged for 2 couples or a family with children. It has a very authentic cabin feel while, at the same time having all the necessities, including a washer-dryer. Outdoor spaces were great, too - a big deck with comfy chairs that was a great spot for bird-watching and relaxing, and a picnic table out back in close proximity to the kitchen. Owner Lisa was a pleasure to work, providing us with great hiking info and promptly refunding our security deposit after our check-out. We enjoyed hikes on some secluded nearby trails, including one that led to a huge grove of Giant Sequoias, and exploring this unique area during our stay, Despite the remote location of Camp Nelson, we were pleased to find free wi-fi service (and friendly servers) at nearby Pierpoint Restaurant - where there's also a post office. Within walking distance of the cabin in the little community of Camp Nelson there's a small grocery store, as well as a restaurant/bar and even a gas station. But best to bring most of what you'll need for your stay, as it's a long and curvy drive to a town with a supermarket!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was nice to meet you and your husband. I am glad you were able to visit our neck of the woods and had such a nice time. All our best, Lisa and Evan

Family of four were more than happy with our stay at this cabin. Lisa the property manager was prompt in her responses and the cabin was in good, clean condition for our visit. Great hiking on some secluded trails to see teh Giant Seqouias. Friend from Tahoe said we had to do it once. No regrets (or whining) from anyone in our group.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Tim, I am glad you enjoyed your stay. There are definetly some great trails to explore. I sure wish I could add your knife to my collection, I will mail it out tomorrow;) Come back and visit! Lisa

We went Easter weekend, with our 2 daughters (10 and 14) and dog. Great yard for dog to run around, and the scene from the deck looking out to the mountains in the distance is great. Excellent service too: The BBQ was out of gas, but they delivered a new one within 20 minutes. It was also fun to drive down the mountain and spend a day hanging out on the river. We stayed 3 nights and neither kid even asked to turn on the TV or complained about not having cell/internet service the entire time. Highly recommend this cabin.Recommended for: Families with young children, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Mathew, My kids are also 10 and 14. I find it amazing that they are able to put down their electroincs and never complain. It is good to hear you had the same experience. Come again soon! Lisa

My wife and I are avid hikers and had searched high and low for that perfect cabin that offered back door access to some of the High Sierra's trail heads while providing us a comfortable, serene setting to rest and charge ahead on the trails again the next day. Upon arrival, we were both blown away with the raw beauty of the surrounding area and the cleanliness of the cabin. The cabin is the perfect retreat and is handsomely decorated enough for a woman to feel at home and comfortable and great for a guy to feel he is not staying in some quaint country cabin. I've been suckered into that scenario by my wife on a few occassions, thats why I did the reseach this time. There are more than enough comfortable lounge chairs on the deck to sit back and relax while viewing the High Sierras and enjoying a cup of coffee. The living room has a nice comfortable man chair by the wood burning stove and plenty of great books to read. Both bedrooms have queen size pillow top mattresses, very comfortable. The kitchen has all the utenisls you'll need and the fridge is very clean. If you are the type that likes visiting a local waterhole and intermingling with the locals, Moe's Tavern is a short jaunt down the road, bring a flash light at night. The owner is a great guy and the locals are totally friendly. The pizza is really good, has a pool table and darts. The cabin is within walking distance to the Camp Nelson Trail, a great 6 mile (12 round trip) hike that brings you to the base of the Summit Trail. you'll follow the river for the majority of the trail and walk through many old growth Sequoia groves. Absolutely breath taking, Other trails, including Needle Point, are not too far off. we would totally recommend this cabin to others and believe you will not be disappointed.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Joe, Thank you so much for the kind comments. Our family is always pleased to hear that our cabin makes for a great getaway. COme back again soon! Tha McFadden Family

We had an amazing weekend in Camp Nelson and can't wait to return to this cabin. The cabin is beautiful and the surrounding area magical. This was a perfect little weekend getaway from the warm weather and big city. This was our first time in the cabin as well as Camp Nelson. We brought our two little girls 4 and 10. We found the cabin to be so cozy, clean and comfortable with everything we needed! The McFadden's are very generous to share this wonderful retreat. We have rented many cabins over the years and this one was the best! with all the little extra comforts and knickknacks. Our girls really enjoyed the toys, books and clawfoot tub. My husband loved the wood burning stove. I loved the peace and quiet. We went to Balch Park one day, Porterville and Visalia on another day. The general store and the creek are all so cute. We also BBQ'd severla times. Enjoyed Stagg Tree area and Ponderosa. We will definitely be back.Did you find this review helpful? I took my two kids there for three days and I hardly saw them. We went hiking by the river and my 6 year old found a tree stump covered with ladybugs. She had just studied them in Kindergarten so she was truly amazed to see the thousands of them. My son found the Tule river to be fascinating, for the fish and simply the thrill of playing in the pools of water and soaking his tennis shoes to my dismay. In the evenings we were able to BBQ and then relax on the awesome deck looking at the stars. Our family is going back for a week!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My family and I spent a winter weekend at the cabin. The access to the cabin was made easy, by how well the roads were kept clear of snow.We enjoyed the days playing and sleding in the snow. The evenings we spent having hot cocktails on the deck of the cabin watching the light of the setting sun on the peaks of the surrounding mountains. The inside of the cabin was well kept and nicely decorated. We had all the fun of camping with the comforts of home.I would highly recommend a stay here to anyone.Did you find this review helpful?
