Property description

Charming, spacious, Victorian flat with high-speed Internet and cable TV. Sleeps 5.

Great location! 2 blocks from Haight St., Whole Foods, Golden Gate Park and 3 blocks from public transportation that takes you into the heart of downtown San Francisco. Bike rentals around the corner, 2 push scooters available in house.

Victorian flat has 2.5 bedrooms and 1 bath. There are many original features: moldings, tall ceilings, windows, and pocket doors. Gas-insert fireplaces are located in the entry and the dining rm, The chef’s kitchen (eat in) has SS appliances, Bertazzoni gas range, fridge w/ icemaker and is next to a laundry room with washer/dryer. There is a 46” HDTV, XFINITY Cable, and DVD player, as well as old maps, art and a collection of 1000 selected books. Bogie, the resident Shih Tzu, will greet you.

Great neighborhood! Wake up with espresso at Reverie Café. Later eat lunch a Zazie’s, a French bistro. Go shopping on Haight St. In Golden Gate Park visit California Academy of Sciences, the DeYoung Museum, and the Conservatory of Flowers – all within walking distance. Also, near GGP’s entrance is a children’s playground with carousel, tennis courts, bocce ball and boating at Stow Lake. Cole Fitness, a neighborhood gym, is nearby.

The Muni Line will take you to Civic Center where you may visit City Hall, the Asian Art Museum or the SF Public Library. Other convenient lines will take you to every part of the city. Taxis abound on Haight Street. Enjoy the artistic delights of the SF Symphony Orchestra, SF Opera, and SF Ballet. Experience the San Francisco theater world with the highly acclaimed American Conservatory Theater and smaller theatre companies. Or enjoy an evening of music or dance at the historic Herbst Theatre where the United Nations Charter was signed.

In the neighborhood stroll down Haight Street and visit unique shops, browse Booksmith, the best of independent bookstores and an important local venue for readings, clown theater, book swaps and community-focused events. Amoeba Music is unusually large, occupying 24,000 sq. ft with typically 100,000 CDs, Vinyl LPs, and DVDs in every category - new or used or trade. Video Nook and Pharmaca are nearby.

If you feel like staying in for the evening, you may find cooking ingredients at Whole Foods and a variety of prepared foods from soups and salads to hot entrees and yummy desserts. If you feel like pizza, order at Escape From New York on Haight Street. Mexican takeout is on the corner. On the other corner is ChaChaCha, a favorite restaurant. Begin the evening with a glass of wine by the fireplace.

Now, regarding parking. If you've driven to San Francisco, you may want to put your mind at ease by using the parking lot one block away at Kezar Stadium some or all of the time so as to avoid the parking ticket. The lot has reasonable rates and a 24 hour attendant. Last time I heard the rate was $18/day.

Keywords: This mid-level flat is spacious (1341 sq. ft.) with tall windows, hardwood floors and new chef's kitchen. Though only two blocks from Haight Street, it is on a quiet street near Golden Gate Park with easy access to UCSF and USF. Owner info

Year Purchased: 1977

About the owner: My introduction to San Francisco was in the sixties when I worked on a surgery ward at UCSF. My free time was spent hanging out in North Beach and favorite places: City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio’s Café, Enricos’ and Café Trieste. After sojourns on the Monterey Peninsula, Washington, D.C. Vietnam and North Carolina, I returned to San Francisco to work as a professor in the UCSF School of Nursing. Haight Ashbury was the neighborhood where I wanted to live. I fell in love with 740 Shrader Street, a house built in 1897 by a well-known artist of the day, Nellie Burrell Scott who was married to Wisner Gillette Scott , an engineer with investment in the mining industry. He was also a very civic-minded gentleman who gave the opening address to the West Coast Defense League meeting in Seattle in 1916. 740 Shrader has been a work in progress all these years, and I take great pride in the high quality of maintenance and improvements. Music has been a passion throughout my life, and opera is my favorite musical form. I especially enjoy chamber and classical, music as well as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Joni Mitchell. Collecting books is another passion; my library includes an extensive collection of books about military history, war and peace. This particular interest derives from an 18 month period in 1967-68 when I worked for the Agency of International Development as a nurse adviser in South Vietnam. Other interests include politics and art. My travels have taken me to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Central America, and Mexico. I was a board member of Haight Ashbury Improvement Association for a number of years. What a sweetheart! Bogey is a friendly Shih Tzu and resident of 740 Shrader. When he was three months old I went to Phoenix to pick him on the advice of a friend. On July 14th, 2011, his friends came over to celebrate his sixth birthday.

Why the Owner Chose Haight Ashbury:
I love living in a metropolitan city with access to the arts: music, theater, dance and museums.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
My abode is on the top floor of 740 Shrader Street; the lower two floors, known as A Flat and B Flat, are vacation rentals. The house was designed by the artist Nellie Burrell Scott in 1897. The top flat where I live was her art studio and place where she could hold informal art receptions. B Flat was their living quarters, and A Flat was, perhaps, servant's quarters and later, a rental. I have a considerable collection of their letters and memorabilia that will eventually be a part of the California Historical Society collections. Most everything I want or need is found within two to four blocks.: an espresso place, pharmacy, excellent cafes and restaurants, hardware store, pet store, gym and neighborhood bar. The best independent bookstore is only a few blocks away as is a Whole Foods store. And Golden Gate Park! I've spent endless hours jogging, cycling walking and rollerskating there. I can drive or take public transportation direct to the Civic Center, Union Square and the Embarcadero for shopping or performances. 740 Shrader's location is central and most places in the city are accessible in 20 minutes. My neighbors are just great! In warm weather we sit out on the stoop next door and enjoy a glass of wine or beer. If you should be visiting on such a warm weather day, you are welcome to join us.
