Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: We are an entrepreneur and educator who both attended college in Boston, with a love of the arts. Hence, we gravitated to the historic Silvermine area of New Canaan when we purchased our home, private but steps away from the Silvermine Art Center and the landmark Sivermine Market, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served in a country market setting. We love our easy access to Long Island Sound, the village of New Canaan (Elm St. on map)filled with shopping boutiques and highly rated restaurants, as well as direct trains to New York City from the center of town.
Why the Owner Chose New Canaan:
This is our primary home, and we have lived and raised our family here for the past 25 years. We were drawn to historic Silvermine for its rich history in the arts and its prime location. The Silvermine River runs nearby, home to the legendary Raggedy Ann by Johnny Gruelle and an assortment of painters and writers. There are beautiful walks and biking around the river that draws people from all areas. It is a 3 mile drive to the village of New Canaan, and its access to the Philip Johnson Glass House as well as the Harvard Five Moderns. Most attractive is our easy access to NYC by train that sits in the center of the village, or a 45 minute ride away by auto. It is a great family home, secluded, updated, and charming, and a welcoming home for family gatherings. . It is the perfect place to experience the New England countryside and yet have direct access to the city and all its culture.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We have the best of both worlds, a beautiful country life yet easy access to New York City museums, theater, and events. New Canaan, founded in 1731, is famous for its village center, Waveny Park (250 acres)which boasts hiking trails, summer concerts, and one of the most iconic fireworks in our area on the 4th of July. There is a beautiful historic district known as God's Acre where the town congregates every Christmas Eve to join together in Christmas carolling and cheer. The season is welcomed in every December with its now famous Holiday Stroll, a weekend of festivities, family fun, and entertainment. Nearby is the New Canaan Historical Society which houses important gallery events, a museum, and library. The town became popular in the mid-1800's as a bucolic escape from the city for wealthy New Yorkers, and magnificent summer 'cottages' were erected that are now year round homes. Walking distance from town is the child friendly Nature Center that is an education center and sanctuary situated on 40 acres with woodland trails, meadows, and ponds. New Canaan is also famous for its local theater company at the Power House Theater in Waveny Park which hosts performances year round.
