Have a Wonderful Vacation – Stay Somewhere Else!
Have a Wonderful Vacation – Stay Somewhere Else!
There are many reasons to avoid this weird property and inhospitable owners, but here are our TOP 10.5 in descending order: (#10) You won’t feel like you’re on vacation – too quiet, near nothing, nothing to watch. (this isn’t the fault of anyone, it just is what it is.) (#9) The owner and his wife live on the property, literally like an in-law arrangement in back of the house; was in the description, but just felt odd having them right there. (#8) Off-street parking is advertised in description – yeah, there’s off-street parking: for the owner! For the renter, it’s on the street. No big deal, just false advertising. (#7) Onsite laundry is promised, too. The catch: it’s located in a FILTHY little outdoor closet located in the owner’s portion of the property, so you have to call him and schedule to use the machines because of the pitbull in their yard. (#6) The pitbull barks and doesn’t like strangers; you don’t want to go near the owner’s gate. (#5) We went out and bought about $200 in groceries for the week, but didn’t know till later the ‘fridge was broken and we had to throw out meat and put dairy in the freezer. Owner knew we had lost food and didn’t offer to reimburse, even as a gesture. He ended up replacing w/ a new appliance during our stay, which meant he and delivery people were in our place while we were out. (#4) When we asked if the owner would be supplying toilet paper (since it was apparent the supply of 1 spare roll wouldn’t be sufficient for a week) he lectured us about excessive TP usage. OMG. Could not believe we were having this conversation! (#3) Mattress in the “master bedroom” was old and terrible – forced you to roll to the center of the bed all night. (yeah, that’s fine for a while, but eventually you might want to sleep!) (#2) Owner had nice patio furniture on his gated side of the property but there’s absolutely NOTHING in the way of outdoor seating for the rental guests. When I asked if there was because we like to have coffee and read the paper outside in the morning, he flatly said No – even though his wife was gone for half the week and we never saw them use the stuff once. Anyone with an ounce of hospitality would have immediately shared a few outdoor chairs. (#2.5) No radio or ipod dock. Just a great big CD player and lots of empty CD cases. (AND THE #1 REASON TO STAY AWAY) Painting of Hell over the mantle – we're not kidding! Now that we think about it, it's rather appropriate.

Owner response: Well I have to say this review doesn't surprise me! From the moment I met this guest and I am referring to the author of the review, I knew we were in trouble. This is the first time we've heard a complaint of how quiet it is at our house? Thank you for this back handed compliment! Yes we do live in the back of this property and I do believe this is pointed out in the VRBO site and I always make it clear to the guest prior to booking. As for the Parking the there is no off street parking, but the street parking is plentiful and just a few steps from the front door. We do have laundry available but yes it is in a small closet in the back and yes we have a dog. I prefer to put her away before guests use the laundry so there are no issues. Yes my dog barks especially if someone stands at a window and teases it as was the case here. I am sorry about the refrigerator but it was an unexpected event! We had no idea! The guest prior did not mention anything about the refrigerator. I did ask about the food they may have lost but I was told not to worry. That it was nothing. I also spent a day of my time shopping for a brand new refrigerator to replace the old one and offered them the opportunity to store their freezer goods in the freezer in the garage, again they declined. As for the delivery of the refrigerator I double check to see if there was good time to have it delivered and again there was no resistance. Also we were there with the delivery people all the time they were in the house. You can't win for losing?? Now the toilet paper, when I showed these guests into the house and gave them the tour I was asked about how much toilet paper we supplied. My answer was two rolls. This Seemed like an ample enough amount for 3 people for a week? So when I asked how many rolls they needed to make sure there was enough, I was told 1 per day or 7 rolls? Of course The reviewer neglects to point out we had to have a plumber come out to unplug the sewer line because of toilet paper? There is a CD Player & a Radio & ample CDs available. As for the Painting from hell all the art in the house was done by my wife. We’ve received complements about the art from some but nothing as rude as this review. If she had taken the time to check the VRBO site she’d have seen a picture of this painting. Personally speaking I wish VRBO would allow VRBO owners the opportunity to review the guest we have because I would not recommend this person to any other VRBO owner

This is a quiet oasis that was amazingly close to Downtown and Balboa Park. It is a neat little bungalow and the owner was very helpful. We arrived later than planned and he adapted to our change without a complaint. I would recommend it to anyone looking to stay in San Diego but away from the crowds.

Reasonable Price for what the property offers.

This small 2 bedroom home is located on a quiet street, not far from Balboa Park. With a GPS, it was very easy to find shopping plazas and expressways. San Diego is a lovely tourist destination. We wish we could have extended our vacation time beyond the 11 days. The house was clean and furnished nicely. All appliances except the coffee maker worked fine. We purchased a new one and left it at the home for future visitors. The property had 3 problems for us: The property states that no pets are allowed, so we assumed there would be no pets to contend with. No where is there mentioned that we share the property with the owners, and that they have a rescue dog: a pit bull, who they admit can be aggressive. That was very jarring for us. The owners were very considerate about not having the dog run loose in the gated yard, but still we found ourselves nervous every time we crossed the yard for fear of what we might meet. The available laundry facilities required going to a building shared with the owners, which would have involved scheduling a time with them, and negotiating the dog's presence. That was not a convenient arrangement for us, so we never used the washer/dryer, even though we would have liked to do so. Finally, the property lists "off-street" parking, but we were instructed to park on the road. We never had a problem finding a parking place near the house, but my question is, why state that it as a parking option, if it isn't? By no means do I want to discourage others from renting this very nice home. We just felt that there is a lack of clarity between what is promoted and what is actual.

Owner response: Thank you Laura & Steve for the review! This house is new to the San Diego Vacation Rental market so any and all suggestion on how to make things better are welcome! First I want to thank you for buying the coffee maker that was very generous of you both. I am sorry about the confusion on the parking and I have made the changes on our site. There is ample parking on the street in front of the house. In fact we have been putting orange cones out to reserve the spot for our gusts and the gate to the front door is just steps away. As for our lovely dog Anza, the reason we don't accept guest with pets is because we already have her on the property. We live in the back and thought it would be too much to have more animals on the property. I am sorry you were uncomfortable with her around I should have brought her over to introduce her to you both and then you would have seen how nice a pet she really is. Thank you again for your review and I hope you both think of our house for you next trip to San Diego

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: We are empty nestors and this house is way to big for the two of us! I have lived in San Diego most of my life and have lived in just about every area there is. Jeannette arrived here about 10 years ago. She is an artist and she tutors Spanish (she speaks 4 languages)
Why the Owner Chose North Park:
We bought this house because my son was accepted to a private school in the neighborhood. It also had a room that Jeannette could use as her studio and class room
The Unique Benefits at this House:
For those of you that don't know North Park it is close to downtown San Diego but quite and residential. We love to walk our dog to all the parks, there are a few. We are very close to 30 Th Ave where you can find an assortment of fine restaurants and bars. The freeway is very close so getting to other parts of San Diego is a breeze
