Watch the sun and the moon rise over the Delaware Bay from this quiet, comfortable beachfront retreat. This easy-going cottage offers a laid-back place to celebrate life, especially for those who travel with their dogs.
Cook your favorite meals in our full kitchen, already supplied with spices and condiments, or go out to a decadent meal in one of the area's gourmet restaurants. The beach resort offers numerous activities from golf and watersports to theater and tax-free shopping, all within a few minutes' drive, but this is the place you want to call home at the end of the day.
Enjoy the romance of a candlelit evening in front of the cast-iron stove in winter, a bonfire on your private beach in summer if the wind is right, or just a simple moment of solitude wandering along the water's edge in any season. Retreat to your bedroom (one queen, one double bed) and fall asleep with the sound of the waves lapping the shore.
There's one full bath and, in summer, an outdoor shower to comfortably rinse off the salt and sand. You can also hook up a quick-connect hose to rinse off your pup with warm water.
Only two hours from Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia, yet a world away from the stress and hassles. Escape the hustle of your work week with a long weekend, and enjoy your third night off-season for free. Call for more details.
Take time to rest, to play. Make time for yourself, and for those you love. Come to the Cottage on the Bay, where we provide all the basics for your comfort.
My golden retriever highly recommends it, but bring your own dog.

We had a wonderful Girls getaway to celebrate my 50th! It was a lovely clean cottage and we enjoyed everything from the daily beach walks, cozy wood stove watch movies, to touring Milton and doing the tour at Dogfish Brewery. It was very comfortable with nice bedrooms and all the comforts of home. Even being off season it was wonderful to be on the beach and catch some rays in the front garden area. We loved the feeling of getting away and loved all the birds we saw in the bay and the Wildlife Refuge. We welcomed the spirit of the cottage and all the reminders how to value the precious moments of life. I would highly recommend this location to family and friends and we are hoping to make this an Annual Retreat. Thanks for sharing this wonderful cottage.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: So glad you could celebrate your 50th with us! And yes, it is a wonderful space, even -- or especially -- in the off-season. Hope to see you again next year!

We wanted to express our thanks for letting us stay in your cottage last weekend. We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed our time in Delaware. The “kids” [two Great Pyrenees] had a great time too. So many new smells on the beach, and much fun romping in the yard. It didn’t take long for them to adapt to a new routine in a new house. We have rented many homes on the Outer Banks and in Florida and your cottage was the best equipped that we have stayed at. Very comfortable. We are looking forward to seeing you again in May. Thanks againDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Everything was as I expected as more! It was great to have all the spices etc. in the kitchen. We cooked most of our meals here. The bed was comfortable, and everything was clean... The boys took right to the beach, even going in the water on their own. Hope we left everything in good shape.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Spent a long off-season weekend here on a "Dames and Dogs" girlfriend getaway with two 2-legged and four 4-legged pals. It is so rare to find a place where they a) allow dogs, and b) don't charge extra fees for them, thank you! The cottage was clean and very well-stocked, everything we could need for a relaxing weekend of beach walks and cooking in, including plenty of towels, spices, teas, dressings, tin foil and more! The neighbors were very friendly, and we were invited to more than one beach bonfire. The dogs loved swimming and running along the beach, and meeting all the other off-leash dogs. The only downside was the nasty sand burrs in the dunes that kept getting stuck in and irritating their paws. :( Overall a good place for a dog-friendly vacation, and even non dog-owners would enjoy it, too!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: I'm glad you had a wonderful visit with your friends, but I'm so sorry your dogs encountered a sand burr plant on the dunes! I remove them from my property and the neighbors' whenever I see them, but unfortunately they can be a natural part of the flora and fauna in fall. I'm happy to report that the pathway to walk over the dune to the beach is always burr-free, and you can always walk freely along the beach itself. It's just the dunes you sometimes need to watch out for during the few weeks when the plants first bloom.

We had the most wonderful, relaxing vacation at the Cottage on The Bay than we have had in a long time. I particularly love setting in the Adirondack chairs in the morning have my coffee. Feeling the gentle breeze and listening to the waves lapping the shore made me appreciate the tranquility of this very special place. Our dogs (Tunie an Aidan) enjoyed the beach and chasing your little bunny in the front yard. They are still playing with the toy you left for them. Kevin and John both enjoyed the cottage the beach and the beautiful wild life refuge. There was very little to complain about the vacation except not having more time to spend. Mary Ann you are the best. You were very accommodating to Kevin and I and the pups and John. We absolutely loved it! We will plan for next year and be in touch. Licks and kisses for Tunie and Aidan!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: I am so glad you all had such a wonderful visit at the Cottage. Look forward to seeing you next summer! Give our regards to Tunie and Aiden

Relaxing, inviting, comfortable, warm....just some of the adjectives that describe Cottage on the Bay. Mary Ann has thought of every amenity from linens, to beach chairs, umbrellas to towels, and a fully stocked kitchen just to name a few. Nothing for us to worry about, but to arrive, unpack and enjoy. The drive through the Primehook Wildlife Refuge was beautiful each time. Close enjoy to enjoy the fireworks on Bethany Beach with close friends and a quick trip to Rehoboth as well. Our 2 Labs loved laying in the sun, walking the beach, swimming in the bay and napping the days away. I agree with the other reviewer - our dogs were not just "allowed" but more than welcome with toys left for their arrival and dog bowls in the kitchen. Thanks Mary Ann for a wonderful week away from it all. We can't wait to come back over and over again. - Bentley and Miles (and their people)Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dearest Bentley and Miles. I so enjoyed meeting you as well as your people. It was a pleasure to have you at the cottage, and I hope you will return soon, and often. Thank you so much for the lovely plaque reminding me of your doggie wisdom. I shall try to live up to it. Bye for now, Mary Ann and Freddy

We just spent the wknd at Cottage on the Bay. It was AMAZING! The location, weather, everything was great! Mary Ann is super nice and we were able to check in a few hrs ahead of time. She left our dogs a nice card and some treats :-) This is definitely a perfect place to just get away from it all with your 4 legged furry children. Once we arrived, we didnt leave until check out! We got to see dolphins shorlty after we arrived and lit up the fire as soon as the sun went down. Highly recommend it for a relaxing weekend to just get away..... Thank you again Mary Ann! Owner response: I'm so glad you found us! This truly is a relaxing place, and it was a delight to have you and your huskies' energy here, as well as your friends and their terrier mix. Thank you for coming, and we hope to see you again soon!

What a beautiful place! We can't recommend it enough! From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed and appreciated how clean and well-stocked the cottage was. Even our dogs were welcomed - not just "allowed on premises" but welcomed with a note, dog bowl & toys. And the fenced-in lawn was perfect for them as well. We had such a great time walking up and down the beach with the dogs, rescuing stranded horseshoe crabs and building cozy beach fires at sunset. And Rehobeth is just 15 minutes down the road. We're so grateful to Mary Ann for sharing this awesome corner of the world with us! We can't wait to come back again!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway.

This lovely cottage is truly "pet friendly"; there are even lids on the trash cans. Our vacation surpassed anything the description led us to expect. The furnishings are comfortable without being intimidating, and the kitchen had everything we needed plus a convenient layout. The cottage is located at the end of a 1.5-mile causeway through the Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge, and each trip in or out offers beautiful scenery. The owner was friendly and helpful without being the least bit bothersome. All in all, a near perfect vacation spot for adults with dogs.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: It truly is a magnificent space, and I'm happy to have been able to share it with you. Thank you for coming!

Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: My partner and I bought this house for her to use as a painting studio back in 1998, escaping from the ongoing flow of guests in our bed and breakfast a few miles away in Milton. But in a few years, this simple cottage became our primary home. She painted, usually acrylics and watercolors, from the porch overlooking the bay, while I worked as a freelance writer from my office. Our four big dogs supervised us, often adding a burst of creativity or inspiration just when we needed it most. We got an enormous amount of pleasure in the simple things of life -- watching the sun come up as we had our morning tea, or taking an after-dinner stroll to watch the sky change colors over the marsh at sunset, throwing sticks in the bay for the dogs to fetch, at times racing them into the water see if we could get it first, or just digging holes and frolicking in the sand. We'd like you to have this opportunity as well, to celebrate the beauty of life here in Prime Hook Beach, and we hope you and your family will cherish your time here as much as we have.
Why the Owner Chose Primehook Beach:
This cottage with a fully-glassed in porch overlooking the Delaware Bay makes you feel as if you are outdoors year-round. The open floor plan affords a view of the water from the back door, through the kitchen and living room, to the front porch.
Our guests describe the feeling of tranquility that begins the moment they leave the highway and wind their way through the 5 miles of fields and forest and marshes of the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
Prime Hook Beach is a lovely community, close enough to upscale restaurants and tax-free shopping at the outlets, but far enough away to feel like you are in another era.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Having a private, sandy beach right at your door allows you to set up your stuff for the day, and be able to easily pop in and out of the house for a cold drink, lunch, your favorite paperback, another dog toy.
When the wind is right, you can have a bonfire or just lay back and watch as the stars come out. We've taken sleeping bags out to spend the night watching the mid-August sky for shooting stars, and we've enjoyed watching (from the shelter of the porch) the occasional summer thunderstorm sweep across the bay, the rain dancing on our tin roof.
