Eva's Cottage - Beachfront Retreat Perfect for Two
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes

Hand-built and rustic, Eva's Cottage is also comfortable and cozy, with many luxurious touches like the down comforter and pillows on the queen-size bed, the wireless internet and travertine/river rock shower. This one-bedroom, one-bath, cottage is perfect for a couple or a solo visitor (in a pinch, it could sleep up to 3 people).
The greatroom is dominated by a massive, wood-burning stone fireplace, and antique casement windows overlook the wraparound porch. The den is a quiet, serene spot that can inspire writing, and the kitchen is completely furnished to accommodate serious cooks, as well as those seeking a vacation from cooking.
Amenities at Eva's Cottage include toiletries and a welcome package of wine, flowers and fixings for your first breakfast. A good supermarket, drugstore, and other services are about 14 miles away in the town of Washougal.TV/DVD in greatroom and bedroom (at this time there is no TV reception; the trees are so large they block line of sight to satellites), games.
Eva's Cottage sits just a few steps from our private beach, nestled in a forest of towering old-growth Douglas fir and cedar. It is an idyllic location with many eagles, heron, hawks, and deer, a large 15' deep swimming hole and year-round waterfall. The land surrounding the Cottage and across the river is private and protected. The temperate climate is never too hot or too cold, and the few neighbors are friendly, but unobtrusive.
This 28.5 acre retreat includes a large and rare stand of old-growth Douglas fir, Western cedar, hemlock and maple; some of which are estimated to be more than 300 years old. Eva's descendants steward the land and maintain the forest with an eye to future generations' enjoyment.
The location provides easy, year-round access to hiking, boating, fishing, skiing and more. The Washougal is one of only two completely unpolluted rivers in the region. It offers fine fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking as it flows into the mighty Columbia River just a few miles to the south. All manner of outdoor activities are close by, yet the setting itself is secluded and free from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

Eva's cottage was the perfect spot for my husband and I to get away and unplug. We had recently said goodbye to our dog and we were looking for somewhere to have space to heal. Eva's allowed us to rest, restore, connect to each other, ourselves and nature. This is quiet a special spot and we will definitely be back. The constantly audible river and falls were so good for the soul. We were captivate by the view of the emerald river. It is even more beautiful than the pictures.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had a great girls weekend at Eva's Cottage. It was far more than expected. They have utilized the space well. The area is beautiful and very close to Cape Horn and Bridge of the Gods. It was fun learning about the history of the cottage. Was raining most of the time but nice to curl up in front of the fire read or watch a movie as we did many nights. The scones were a big hit! I would highly recommend this property.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The five nights I stayed at the quaint one-bedroom cottage were most suiting. I particularly appreciated the overall essence of the lush, large trees, and calming river that radiate amidst this wondrous, rustic abode. Very peaceful, indeed.. The cottage, itself, embodies a quality and charm that blends its historic origins with caring contemporary touches.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We enjoyed a 4 day birthday weekend at this lovely cottage. It was exactly as described. We felt welcome right away with fresh flowers, wine and breakfast fixings there to greet us. We enjoyed hiking the nearby trails w/ our dogs and relaxing evenings by the big stone fireplace playing backgammon, a game we used to play before kids. Now, with an empty nest the cottage afforded us the opportunity to just be a twosome again. We are looking forward to our next visit. Thanks to Rose and the owners for making this slice of paradise available.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our stay at Eva's cottage was nothing short of fabulous. The location is remote but close enough to shopping etc to be convenient. The cottage itself is simply breathtaking for a dwelling with the history that it has. It felt like HOME after a long day of taking in the many sights that are available throughout the area. Rose (the property manager), is a very sweet gal whom we met upon our arrival. We showed up a bit early and she was preparing the property for our stay. She was placing beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers both inside the cottage and on the covered porch outside. It definitely added a big WELCOME right from the start. A bottle of local wine and 2 glasses were also placed on the table with the flowers to further offer a big welcome. A very classy gesture for an extremely reasonable rental. The wildlife in the area of the cottage are very at ease with the presence of people although not to a point of being annoying. I would advise you not to feed the deer so as to afford others the opportunity to view them in a natural state. They are wonderful creatures to watch doing the things that they would normally do deep in the forest such as grazing on what nature gives them. We will definitely be back for a return visit and would recommend this rental to anyone searching for a home away from home while in the area. There is so much to see and do that we merely scratched the surface of getting to know the area during our nine day trip. Being from Wisconsin, we would love to visit during the winter months when a peaceful serenity sets in deep in the forest. It is a feeling I grew up with, and that time of year is by far the most beautiful and soothing to the soul. I can definitely see this as a place to experience the feeling I am referring to. Give it a try and it will bring you closer to a feeling of being one with the earth. I know that my review has become a bit long winded and that is because both my wife and myself fell in love with the place from the moment we arrived. You will too, so don't miss out on this one. This rental is a small slice of heaven in a sometimes hectic world. It is the kind of place I would love to settle in to in my retirement years. Laid back and cozy. Give EVA'S COTTAGE a try. You too will leave feeling refreshed and long to return before even walking out the door. THANKS ROSE, and please thank the owners for offering us the opportunity to share this slice of heaven. They must be as special as YouRecommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Hate to give it a good review because it won't be MY special getaway place, but OK, I will...regretfully! :) The peacefulness of the place was just what I needed. It was simply perfect. Quiet. Tranquil. Rose gave it such personal touches in preparation for my stay. The bed was very comfortable. The cabin was historic, yet they had updated it so beautifully so it felt new. The river about 60 steps from the porch where I spent my mornings was so clear and magnetic. Spent every breakfast down there sitting on the beach. Perfect for one (or 2) who just needs a quiet getaway in the beautiful mountains of Washington.Owner response: Thank you so much! It's great to hear that Eva's legacy continues to help guests unwind and enjoy their surroundings. Please come back again!

The interior of the cottage was extremely clean and beautifully restored. The sound of the rushing water and waterfall was delightful. It was very restful. We did not miss the TV but would have appreciated a washer/dryer. We'd go back again!Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

Very nice secluded cottage. Very interesting history of the cottage-Eva King and her sons. We enjoyed the quietness and the sound of the river just outside the door. Very clean. Because there is no TV to watch that was different for us, since my husband likes his sports and news. But that was just fine with me:*) Everything was there in the kitchen to cook. Enjoyed our stay and would recommend any one to come and stay. I would have loved to fish more, as it rained when we were there, but that was okay as well. Hope to come back again, soon, without the kiddo next time :*) We did take the time and drove to Washougal to "Big Al's" to bowl, that was fun as well.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We really enjoyed our 3 day stay. In spite of the clouds & rain (it is a rain forest after all); the warm fireplace & tons of windows made for a great view & a feeling of being outside. I couldn't believe it, but there really is a view of the Washougal River from every room in the house, including the bathroom! You can hear the river thoughout the house as well, very soothing after a hard week's work. The kitchen has a huge bay window with the best view of all. Rose, the manager, was very helpful and responds to questions quickly. The house is stocked with comforts..........hairdryer, warming blanket, throw blankets, games, magazines, good stereo, DVD player, condiments in the fridge, even home-made jam. We brought enough groceries, some CD's & DVD's and would never have had to leave. However, if you want to go out to dinner, you can go into Washougal and have dinner at The Hearth, it's a great restaurant with a very friendly waiter. To top it all off, there is a three ring binder with a story of the origin of the cabin. It's a facinating story about a woman who was very progressive for her time. We hope to come back in the summer and go down to the small beach to swim in the swimming hole. I'm glad they don't allow children because it wouldn't be safe, that river is too close, too attractive & easy for them to fall into.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Being business owners, my husband and I rarely have time away. We were searching for new traditions and something different. We "stumbled upon" Eva's Cottage when Rose so kindly introduced it to us. It was exactly what we were looking for in our Thanksgiving Retreat. Rest, relaxation, reading by the stone fireplace. The sound of the river was soothing and the view from the kitchen was very picturesque. Rose was the ultimate host in making sure all was well with us. Her little extra touches were appreciated. We definately recommend Eva's Cottage to our friends and we hope to go back again very soon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1936
About the owner: In 1936 my grandmother, Eva King, purchased the land from the original landholder, Maggie Hanlon. Eva was an avid fisherwoman and forward thinker; her family has treasured this property ever since.
Why the Owner Chose Cascade Locks:
We never tire of the views through every window: trees, ferns and native plants are everywhere, and, of course, the beautiful river. Wildlife abound and the deer have become tamed over the years. They may even be coaxed to take bread out of your hand.
Right outside the door we have a beautiful waterfall, 15’ deep swimming hole and sandy beach. We have the largest stand of old-growth forest in the entire region, and we are serious about preserving this fabulous resource for future generations.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Built by Eva in 1936, this Craftsman-style cottage has remained in her family for four generations. Eva's grandson and his family have lovingly restored the cottage from the ground up. Original features, such as the fireplace built with stones collected from 4 states, have been retained, with modern conveniences added.
The Washougal River is one of the two remaining pristine (unpolluted) rivers in the region. It offers fine fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking as it flows into the mighty Columbia River just a few miles to the south. All manner of outdoor activities are close by, yet the setting itself is secluded and free from the noise and distractions of everyday life.
