Vacation in 1964 Palm Springs as you listen to Frank Sinatra and look over the whole valley while the sun goes down and the city lights appear. You can see the lights flashing on the windmills and the trail of headlights on I-10, over 20 miles away. You sip your martini and now know what a relaxing vacation is all about. You are staying in the Cody House, one of the top architectural vacation properties of the world, according to Time magazine. Robert Redford enjoys the Cody House and calls it “The quintessential Palm Springs home.” Martha Stewart raves about the Cody House: “One of my favorite Palm Springs homes and very inspirational!” Featured in Architectural Digest in 1967, the Cody House also graced the cover of Architectural Digest: France in June of 2010. Architectural tours, sponsored by the Getty and the Smithsonian, call the Cody House one of the best examples of Palm Springs mid-century architecture. “A jewel box!” “A work of art!” and “My favorite of favorites!” can be heard by the tour guides as they point out the home on the hillside. They also call it one of the most comfortable homes of the era.
Views off the Front, Views off the Back.
The Cody House was designed by Architect William Cody as a spec house with no client to blur his vision. The home was then bought by a Chicago inventor who hired Arthur Elrod to design the interior. It took William Cody over a year to design the home. He placed it on the ridge so the bedrooms could view the ever changing sunrise off the back of the house and the front of the house captures the mountain and valley views and Palm Spring’s sunsets. You can see the tram lights go up and down the mountain all evening.
Huge Rooms, Luxury Baths
Each of the three bedrooms has a privacy deck and full bath. There is no fighting over who gets which bedroom. Each is unique and luxurious. Walls of glass bring the outside in and the inside out. Pristine views off each angle of the house!
Modern Kitchen with a View
The Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer, Thermador range, and Viking dishwasher have the chef and kitchen team well equipped. Granite countertops replaced the Formica, but you are sure to be inspired by the lighting, views, and all the fun kitchen tools! The walk-in pantry is stocked with the basics and more. With a large collection of Fiesta Ware, china, and linens, it is fun to figure out a different theme for each meal. Orange, grapefruit, blood orange, lemon, lime and Buddah’s Hand trees are on the property for you to enjoy. Nothing like a freshly squeezed blood orange juice each morning! “This is my favorite house in the world” claims London’s Conde Nast/GQ designer, Grace Gilfeather.
Photo Shoots, Filming, Events and Parties
The Cody House has been the location for many photo shoots when they are trying to capture the 1960s Palm Springs look. Bloomingdale’s, Talbots, Pottery Barn, Tom Ford, GQ Magazine, Self Magazine, Glamour, The London Times, and countless others have all enjoyed and shot at the Cody House. Heineken filmed a commercial and Oprah’s own world-famous landscape designer, Jamie Durie, gave the ultimate nod to the Cody House. Jamie says, “I loved the Cody House so much I bought my home in Los Angeles because it reminds me of the Cody House!” I am now putting in a book-matched marble wall!” Jamie celebrated his 40th birthday with his Australian friends at the Cody House. Sorry, but we don’t allow weddings at the Cody House, just corporate events, birthday parties, and celebrations. Please call for some suggestions for wedding venues!
