We're just back from two nights at Stony Bottom Gardens' guest cottage. This was our second stay there and it was a great getaway from the Bay Area. The gardens are gorgeous and Ginger & Walt are friendly hosts. The cottage has everything you need in the kitchen, a comfortable bed, and two patios to take advantage of sitting in either sun or shade. We love Boonville and the Anderson Valley, and Stony Bottom has become a favorite part of our visits.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I have just returned from another wonderful stay at Stoney Bottom Gardens. It has now become a summer tradition for us as we have had the privilege of staying at both the Cottage and the Suite over the last few years. The photographs do not do justice to this amazing, gorgeous, garden setting. The listing description is very accurate and you get, oh so much more! The finest linens, the softest towels, and a king size bed that is as comfortable as home (and perhaps more comfortable) await you. Ginger and Walt are the most thoughtful, kind, and caring vrbo hosts we have met in our travels. We will continue to come back every June to celebrate the summer solstice in this splendid setting.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Need some impetus to work in your garden; Stoney Bottom Gardens will restore your green thumb ambitions. Just returned from a wonderful weekend in the Anderson Valley after enjoying the cottage and gardens of Stoney Bottom for two days. Truly an undiscovered jewel box of landscaped wonderment. Hope to return next spring when the thousands of bulbs will emerge from the lovingly tilled soil. The hosts are welcomimg and delightful.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We have a standing reservation for an annual getaway to this delightful location. It is wonderful to watch the property evolve as Walt adds to his gardens. We always reserve the Cottage where we can spend blissful hours sitting on the deck, sipping a glass of wine and watching the birds and butterflies dance through the garden. Do check out the photos - they don't do justice to this remarkable place. The Cottage is spotless and cozy, comfy. Ginger and Walt are caring, interesting, and delightful hosts. If you can bear to leave this place the Anderson Valley is wonderful to explore with many charming wineries (Husch is one of our favorites) and good places to dine. For those who want to visit the coast, Mendocino, a charming old seacoast town, with a great botanical garden, is only 30-40 minutes away.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

I first stayed at the Stoney Bottom Gardens a few years ago. It is delightful. The cottages are well-appointed and creatively decorated. The extensive gardens and collection of art (some by Ginger!) dotted throughout are worth wandering around (or relaxing in). Ginger and Walt are excellent hosts, they make you feel at home. I have been back a couple more times, recommended it to friends and given a two night stay as a wedding present. It is a truly unique and wonderful place to stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We recently returned to the UK from our 2nd visit to the Anderson Valley. We stayed at Stoney Bottom Gardens both times & can truly say what a wonderful experience it was. The changes we saw in the 6 year gap between visits was remarkable. The cottage & suite are wonderful with homely touches & yet a feeling of extravagance. We travel all over the world & can only say that this accomodation is second to none. The gardens are fabulous & once again compare to professional gardens seen at Kirstenbosch (South Africa), Monet's garden in France & numerous Royal & Stately Home gardens back home in the UK. To add to all of this of course is the welcome received from the owners. Walt & Ginger are amazing hosts, warm & friendly & so knowledgeable of the area as a whole. They make you want to revisit time & again. It definitely won't take us another 6 years to do so.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: Walt is the former Dir. of Strybing Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park, (now San Francisco Botanical Gardens) San Francisco, CA. Ginger is a ceramicist/artist and the primary designer of the rental properties. Both are plant collectors extraordinaire. Purchased in 2000, with no master plan, the garden and the structures have evolved over an 11 year odyssey from scraggly scrub to a lush landscape with beautifully appointed accommodations. Fenced for protection from the deer in 2004, the Valens have planted more than 6,000 bulbs: daffodils/narcissus, iris, and lilies. Wild flower seeds are on the way to becoming established. Rhododendrons, a “yellow” garden, the “star” garden, an extensive vegetable garden, the succulent garden, the redwood grove and a cutting garden delight the eye and senses. The Pavilions, set in a 'primitive' garden of palms, and cycads, nestle up to the massive green lawn lend themselves to lounging and enjoying a glass of wine with friends. A garden sculpture collection and an onsite garden shop are available for your walking pleasure. Tours for non-residents are available by appointment for a small fee.
