Hilo cottage description

Read our reviews! 'The Lotus' is a Jewel in amongst the green... Our guests love this unique vacation rental set in a quarter acre lush tropical garden right in the heart of Downtown Hilo. Our 'Lotus' vacation villa is tucked away behind an art gallery and a book store. Wake to the sound of birds and enjoy the seclusion of our private walled compound. Once you step outside our red bamboo gate and onto the street, you will love the convenience of being able to walk to shops, movies, restaurants, galleries and more. The Farmer's Market is one block away and each day there fresh tropical fruits and vegetables are for sale.

If your taste is for old homes and places with a sense of history then you will love our little rental. This accommodation is best described as '..An exotic Vacation Rental for the budget traveler.' There is no TV or microwave and no air-conditioning so we have appeal for those wanting to enjoy a simple tropical home with just the basics. Our guests tell us this makes a romantic couples retreat and a place for a great family vacatiion.

The Lotus is a refurbished traditional Hawaii-style 'Cane house’ built in the heyday of the Sugar Plantations. We painted it some bright colors and gave it a few upgrades to make your stay comfortable. The home features bamboo floors, an open plan kitchen and living area as well as charming features of an old home. The shower is downstairs which was the style for these homes. Our close proximity to the bay means that the home is cooled by sea breezes. Ceiling fans in the living area and bedroom will ensure your comfort. In the master bedroom, the mattress is a pillow-top queen sized bed to ensure a great night's sleep. The other bedroom offers a queen sized bed and in the third bedroom there is a single bed. A fold out futon bed suitable for a child can be made available. Our couch also folds out to a full sized bed. Up to 8 people can be accommodated in 'The Lotus.'

At one time this property was like many of the Sugar Cane 'camps' on this island with 6 houses houses on the property. We presently have two refurbished houses for guest accommodation. There another two houses in the rear of the property not currently in use. The 'Sugar Shack' next door is another refurbished cane house where we offer bed and breakfast accommodation. Our two vacation homes on the property can accommodate parties of up to 14 guests and so ours makes an ideal venue for a wedding, tour group, seminar or other small group event.

As your hosts, we have tried to think of your needs. Our goal is for our guests to relax and enjoy their visit to our island. Upon check in our guests find fresh flowers and fruit in our rental. Beach towels are provided.

This vacation spend less time in the car! Come and stay with us for a relaxed pace of life and an exotic tropical experience with plenty of beauty and good hospitality.

We loved being in the middle of Hilo, just a stone throw away from the farmer's market. Although right in downtown the garden around the cottage is really quiet and a fine retreat. The idea of the "downstairs" bathroom is charming. Megan and Jasper were just perfect hosts. We'd love to come back.

This place has three great things going for it. The house itself is lovely and in the middle of a beautiful garden. It is in a prime location to enjoy the things that make hilo unique. And Jasper and Megan are terrific hosts.

Megan and Jasper's hospitality surpasses any other hotel/ B&B/ serviced apartments we have stayed in. They seem to really care for their guests and go out of their way to make their stay more comfortable. The unit is very clean and beds and pillows were very comfortable. However, it needs some home improvement such as: netting in the windows and all doors to keep flying bugs out. All rooms need ceiling fans. The open shower area downstairs need more privacy in general and a door between the yard and the shower area. The third bedroom was very stuffy and seemed 'separated' from the rest of the rooms and access to it is through the front deck. Young kids would have hard time sleeping there. Despite it's negative points In general, it was an okay- value accommodation (considering this is HIlo). If you don't mind the drive, just stay in Kona where there are better value accommodations. Perks: outstanding hospitality, lovely setting (Balinese style), excellent location (close to restaurants and the farmer's market), fresh fruits and Avocados from the trees. Kitty was the travel highlight for my 5-yrs old. I loved falling asleep listening to the chirping frogs but others may find it noisy- so it could go either way.

My partner and I along with my 2 teenage daughters stayed at the Lotus Garden for 2 nights in March. It was absolutely lovely. It is just as the pictures show - very clean and bright and peaceful. Although it is located right in the City it was amazing how quiet it was at night. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

I visited Hilo with my wife and 2 friends (all mid-20's) and we had a great time. The Lotus is right in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of so many great restaurants, shops and attractions. Only gripe to be had was the mosquito's but they were taken care of instantly with some citronella candles on the porch. Megan and Jasper were very nice and accommodating during our stay. You would think it would be a bit noisy being located where it is, but surprisingly it was very calm and quiet - big plus. We were able to grab some groceries and store them in the refrigerator and also cook them. All in all, we had a great time and would definitely recommend this property to any friends visiting Hilo!

We thoroughly enjoyed our three day stay at The Lotus! The location was perfect for us -- we did not have a car and found walking everywhere very easy and interesting! Enjoyed museums, terrific restaurants (Magic Pan, Paul's Cafe, Pesto), shopping and people!!! Everyone, everywhere was welcoming and helpful. Heard many stories from the locals. The couple who own The Lotus are delightful, friendly and helpful. The accommodation is adequate and clean, very good beds and such a sweet (tropical feeling) setting. The whole place is still 'in process' but nothing interfered with our enjoyment. We are two older women friends, traveling by ourselves in Hilo. We would definitely recommend the Lotus if you are interested in a local experience. The photos and descriptions by VRBO are very accurate.

We recently spent four nights at this property in Old Hilo Town and were very satisfied! The location is convenient, and we enjoyed the markets and near-by museums without taking the car! Descriptions on the website were accurate. The cottage was immaculate, beautifully decorated and stocked with adequate kitchen equipment. We did not need an oven or microwave. The owners, Megan and Jasper, were gracious and welcoming, made suggestions and were able to answer our questions! I enjoyed working with Megan during the "booking" process, too. We are active seniors, in our 60's and 70's, and would definitely stay here again! The stairs might be problematic for some--not an issue for us. A privacy shade on the entry door would be nice. A very interesting and fun experience! We look forward to a return visit at some point.

Owner response: We are glad when our guests write positive reviews and let us know they enjoyed their stay. We are grateful for the suggestion from this guests also and we will be installing a curtain on the front door to make the front entrance more private. Thank you very much.

Owners Meg and Jasper remind me of my Grandparents who worked the cottage industry - constantly working, never resting, always there when you needed them, never anything but a smile on their face. Their work ethic is amazing. The place was a bit more rustic than we are used to (no microwave, no oven, no TV, no couch to "sprawl", shower outside) but we made do. Being a mere few feet from the Farmer's Market meant fresh veggies all the time (not to mention some new jewellery acquisitions!) and with Pineapples restaurant again a few feet from us it meant the spousal unit had access to restaurant food and all the sports he needed. The central location was great for getting out to the Volcano, helicopter rides, zip lines, and all travelling in/around the area. We also very much appreciated that it was only a five minute walk to the nearest gym (which happened to be BJ Penn's gym - aka 2x UFC World Champion). The bed was wonderful (though wildlife loud! and man can this place RAIN!) but asides from that you could not ask for a more helpful pair than Meg and Jasper who seemed to really only want the best for us and for us to have whatever it was that we needed. Megan offered to bake my yams for me when I mentioned my surprise at not having an oven and was accomodating in every way. Also a very eco-friendly place that supported both recyling and composting. Megan was the one who suggested we use Kalapana Cultural Tours for our lava sightseeing and of all the tours we did , this was by far the best. Our gratitude to both Megan and Jasper for their kindness, helpfulness, and hospitality.

Owner response: These guests were wonderful to host and we loved to help them to feel welcome. We were glad for them they could find plenty to like about the East side of Hawaii Island and our town of Hilo. The weather in the months of December, January and February can be unpredicatable. Shane and Lisa arrived in time for a patch of especially wet weather but we're so glad they adapted and found ways to enjoy their stay with us.

                                  Owner info

                                  Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: Hawaii island has changed in many ways since ‘the last harvest’ in 1996 as it is remembered by locals here and Jasper arrived on the island in time to see those ‘old days’ of Hawaii. In 2009 Jasper campaigned for mayor on a platform of sustainable agriculture for the island and continues to support small agriculture in Hawaii. A retired contractor, Jasper has been working on the Hilo Garden Villas, a property that hosts traveler accommodation and two vacation rentals as well as a Center for massage and for Natural Farming Education. Megan is originally from Australia and lives some of the time in Hilo and some of the time in Melbourne, Australia. Megan and Jasper both love the colors of the tropics and have spent time restoring several old homes on the property so that visitors can enjoy an experience of an older Hawaii and the relaxed pace of life on Hawaii island.

                                  Why the Owner Chose Hilo:
Hilo is on the east side which is the ‘wet & wild side’ of our island and offers a lot of natural beauty and rugged coastlines to explore. There is plenty to see and do no matter what the weather. Whenever visitors come to stay with us it is easy point them in the direction of botanical gardens, our live volcano 'Kilauea', the famous Red Road of Puna with warm geothermal ponds and black sand beaches and the attractions of Hilo itself. Our tropical rainy climate means we enjoy an abundance of fresh produce and exotic fruits and flowers all year round and these can be found at the Farmer's Market, just a block away. This is a photographer's dream! Jasper bought this property in 2001 and was inspired by the sense of history here and the fact that this property is walled on all sides creating a sense of privacy and serenity. There are two vacation rental homes on the property. Both of these are painted bright colors and have been refurbished. They sit behind 4 stores. Among them, there is a thriving art gallery, a second hand bookstore and a Hawaiian clothing & design store. You will enjoy browsing here and meeting these neighbors. The property itself is in the geographic heart of Hilo Bay and at one time there were 5 homes on this small half-acre block and many families lived in close proximity as was the tradition for the ‘camps’ associated with the Sugar Plantation days and we have enjoyed restoring them one by one. There are many talented musicians and artists who make Hawaii 'home' and so there is much local art and entertainment to enjoy around Hilo and the vicinity. Our favourite place to swim is the nearby ‘Four Mile’ (officially known as Carlsmith Park) this is a beautiful lagoon with palm trees and a lush green lawn for picnics and sunbathing.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The old Hawaiian name for this property is translated to mean 'When You Fall Down Pick Yourself Up.' Our lush garden setting features stone buddha statues, bamboo and fruit trees and it is the perfect place to rest and recover. Guests can place an order for fresh coconut water to be delivered or they can make relaxation a priority as they spend time in our hot tub or taking advantage of our reasonable rates, schedule a massage on site. Experience the charm of our town of Hilo which has a slow pace becoming more and more rare in the world. Enjoy the peace of a vacation where less time is spent driving in a car.
