ABOUT CAYMAN BRAC:

From brilliant reefs in pristine waters to exotic birds nesting on jagged cliffs, Cayman Brac is home to a wealth of stunning natural wonders. The island’s unique geological features and abundant animal life make it an ideal destination for a variety of outdoor activities including scuba diving, snorkeling, rock climbing, hiking, bicycling, caving, and bird-watching.

DIVING Cayman Brac offers some of the most remarkable diving in the Caribbean. With over 50 major sites, divers at all levels are spoiled for choice. The reefs offer radiant coral, sea fans, and sponges in bright shades of red, orange, yellow, green, and purple. At varying sites, divers often encounter turtles, rays, sharptail eels, angelfish, puffer fish, parrot fish and countless other aquatic species. Divers can also explore the upper decks of a 330-foot freighter that was deliberately sunk and made safe for diving. The ship’s features include a missile launcher, deck cannons, living quarters and more.

HIKING With diverse terrain, unique flora and fauna, and gorgeous views, Cayman Brac’s hiking trails are ideal for an adventurous traveler. All of the trails are easily accessible, with signage visible from the roadside. The two-mile nature trail through Saltwater Pond Reserve covers 38 species of trees and a variety of birds including the near-threatened Brac parrot and vitelline warbler. Or for a challenge, hikers can follow rocky trails up the bluff to reach stunning views.

CLIMBING Cayman Brac boasts some of the world’s most exotic climbing. The island derives its name from the beautiful bluff on the eastern end of the island (Brac means bluff in Gaelic). The limestone cliffs reach up to 43 meters (140 feet), offering unparalleled views. There are over 70 bolted routs on the island, from beginner to advanced, and the number continues to grow.

CAVING The abundant caves on Cayman Brac are home to amazing formations and unique flora and fauna. A number of the caves have historical significance, as they have been used as shelter during the rare severe hurricanes that have come to the island. Popular caves include Peter’s Cave, which offers a spectacular view of the south side of the island and the ocean beyond; the Bat’s Cave, which houses a number of bats as well as owls; and the Great Cave, which offers beautiful formations and large open rooms.

BIRDS A number of striking exotic birds have been observed on Cayman Brac, including the white-tailed tropic bird, the Brac parrot, tricolored herons, the magnificent frigate bird, and spoonbills. Some have formed permanent colonies; others stop by for breeding or on their way to warmer climates. Brown booby colonies can be observed on the lighthouse footpath all year round, but springtime is best for sightings of their fluffy white chicks.

WOW! What a perfect house to stay at if you like diving and or snorkeling. Fantastic dive spot right in front of the house, easy dive to the wall or just stay within the inshore reef and enjoy the beauty in 30 to 50 foot of water. Gear up on the back porch and walk down the private dock to the sea. Enjoy the turquoise blue waters or the amazing stars from the upper deck or the hammocks. Inside you will find everything to be comfy in a very clean well-decorated house with an open floor plan. Jane and Glenn are great, they can advise you on things to do places to eat etc. We chartered a snorkel trip on their boat to Little Cayman; we had a great day of fun and sun. An added bonus is the two-person kayak. It is a great way to get a little exercise and view the island from a different perspective, or stop at a secluded beach area, also a great way to watch the sunset. This was our 5th trip to the Brac. We had the pleasure of staying at Hammock Moon for a month and I think that the location of this home is ideal. We can’t wait to spend our next Brac vacation at Hammock Moon.

My husband and I spent a week at Hammock Moon and could not have been more satisfied with every detail. Jane and Glen are the consummate hosts -- they greeted us the airport and were available if needed for tips, recommendations and hospitality. In one short week, we felt like we were visiting old friends. One recommendation I took to heart was having a massage from a resident massage therapist right there on the patio of Hammock Moon. The therapist Jane recommended was amazing!! The home is exactly what you would want on a sleepy island like Brac. Light colors, clean, airy, modern without being stark, a loaded kitchen, and a mix of perfect spaces for each time of the day. We arrived at night and were immediately taken with the upper deck. We ate dinner each night on the deck (except Friday night at the Brac Reef Resort, which we highly recommend if you want an evening "out"), starting with cocktails and often ending with a movie al fresco from the home's DVD collection played on our laptop followed by a healthy dose of stargazing. Our first daylight impression of Hammock Moon was the stunning view out the living room windows right into the ocean. It is breathtaking -- no picture will do it justice. Early mornings were spent in the fabulous great room taking in the view and planning our day. We spent the first half of our days either diving right off the deck in front of the house, on a boat dive with Brac Reef Resort, on our own at the awsome shore dives available on the island, or hiking and exploring the many trails and caves. A week will not even scratch the surface on dive opportunities and Glen is full of tips on how to maximize your dive experience! The second half of most days we spent back at Hammock Moon, laying on the beach with our adopted island pets (a few local dogs and one special cat will hang out with you if you like), or lazing in the hammock. I cannot say enough about how perfect our week here was or how much we admire the unobtrusive yet attentive touch of our hosts. The Moon is one of those rare special places that will touch your heart and make you feel like you have a second home in a place where life is simple, the air is clean, and the ocean is calling you back. We will definitely be back to the Moon soon to answer that call.

We stayed at Hammock Moon for our Christmas holiday. We were greeted by Glenn at the airport and he escorted us to the house to make sure we found it easily. We really appreciated it. The home is absolutely perfect for a small family, couple or a few friends who just want to relax. The open concept kitchen, living room make it a great place to visit. We feel this property is a great value for dollars spent. The amenities of laundry, kitchen, movies, snorkeling gear, kayak, hammocks, deck and ocean make it so you don't have to leave very often. However, once you're ready to venture out it only takes minutes to drive from one place to another to visit the gift shops, grocery, restaurants and beaches. SCUBA diving is must if you have the time and pre-book for PADI lessons. The home is nestled in a quiet area where neighbors are friendly and helpful. Be sure to check out NIM Things, the Pioneer Bakery, Popo Jeb's Pizza, Eddy and Barry's jerk chicken. I'll stop there, I think you get the idea. Our family fell in love with the Brac and we will be back.

Owner response: our translation, Merci Beaucoup Dom and Simon! What a magnificent house in the wonderful setting of Cayman Brac. The owners are fantastic and very welcoming. The house breathes happiness and what can one say, the sea is at your back door. Snorkeling in front of the house is divine; Mama Nips, the neighbor's dog, does his rounds and spending the afternoons in the hammocks listening to the sea will stay engraved in our memories for a long time. You must try: the jerk chicken in the village, the rum cake and a little visit to Big Daddy [for drinks] is a must. Paradise! Thank you with all our hearts to Jane and Glenn! You soon find yourself immersed in the peacefulness that is the Brac. You can go for days if you chose without encountering another soul. However, when you do venture out every single person you meet along the highway greets you with a friendly wave, like they have known you your entire life. Your hosts; Jane and Glenn made us feel like long lost friends sharing the must do experiences on the Brac which include a short drive to the Pioneer Bakery for any number of tasty treats; cinnamon buns, banana bread, coconut bread, meat pies and bullas which you simply have to try. Or directing you to that perfect swimming hole, or local artists for a bit of shopping out at Nims and things out near Long Beach. Any stay on the Brac should include a trip out to the lighthouse and a walk along the trail that runs back along the north side of the island overlooking Long Beach. This allows you to get an up close and personal encounter with the booby birds that are inhabitants of the cliffs along the bluff. The snorkeling in the waters in front of Hammock Moon provide glimpses of all types of marine life which included; turtles, rays, barracudas and squid to highlight just a few. If you’re a diver the dive opportunities are endless and Glenn can key you in on those shore dives you don’t want to miss! Hammock Moon is truly a place that allows you to totally relax and forget about the daily stress that life sometimes brings. As we mentioned early on, the experience we had on the Brac and specifically at Hammock Moon escape capturing in words. To truly understand the beauty of the home, the friendliness of the island and especially your hosts Jane and Glenn you simply have to experience it all firsthand! Hammock Moon is a destination that we are sure to enjoy again. Everett & Jane (Upstate New York)

Spent two weeks at Hammock Moon and had an amazing time. The owners are terrific, sharing local information - good to know when the barge arrives and where the grocery and bakery are located! We were met at the airport by the owner and given a short tour on our way to the house. The home is just as pictured, with lots of space and is very well maintained. We spent most of our time on the back deck enjoying the view - it's beautiful. A rental car is a must, you'll definitely want to explore the island. We didn't really do any diving but did some snorkeling in the "watering hole" which was a great place to swim and enjoy the water - open to the sea if you wish to venture out (another owner recommendation). The home has everything you'll need for a vacation stay and having a washer/dryer is a great bonus. The beds are extremely comfortable. The owners had a nice selection of DVDs which we took advantage of the last few days of our visit. Things around the island which I would HIGHLY recommend include visiting the Lighthouse, the Friday night barbeque at Brac Reef resort, Pioneer Bakery (each day a different freshly baked treat - don't leave without trying the bullas - another of the owner's recommendations), and the Star Island restaurant. Cayman Brac was a wonderful place to vacation and the owners of Hammock Moon did an amazing job of making us feel at home. We will definitely make plans to return!

My husband and I stayed here with another couple over Thanksgiving and had a lovely time. The scenery was beautiful, we could snorkel right off of the dock, and the house was charming and inviting. There was a fully stocked kitchen that we used to cook a full Thanksgiving dinner, and comfy beds to nap on afterwards, when we were too full to move. We also really enjoyed being able to have a drink on the upper deck and enjoy the view. The owners are very friendly, and know the island well-- they helped us find everything we needed and were very hospitable. We are hoping to go back someday!
