MENEHUNE [meh-neh-HOO-neh]-- Hawaii’s legendary mystical and shy forest dwellers are small in size at about two feet high, although some are only six inches high. They live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. According to legend they are very industrious master builders that use their great strength to accomplish mighty feats of engineering and construction overnight.
In that spirit, we welcome you to 'MENEHUNE MANSIONS'... which to the UNMYSTICAL HUMAN, would appear to be A VERY SWEET FOREST COTTAGE.
Minutes to Hawaii Volcano National Park and tucked away in the beautiful forest of desirable Volcano Village.... you will come home to a tropical, clean, fresh, warm and cozy hideaway... for a menehune mystical price!

Just a sweet little place. Well manicured grounds, very responsive/invested owners. Very clean. Bed very comfortable. Well appointed interior. Excellent value for prices especially in Hawaii. We loved the Menehune theme! ALOHA from a couple of halau members of Kapio'o Ke Anuenue.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway.

Aloha Lesie, I have submitted our review and it was apparently accepted. We enjoyed our stay and wish you luck with your future rentals. The reviews all sound accurate and in total, comprehensive. After having stayed in a half a dozen locations in Hawaii I can tell you this is not always the case. Sometimes you MUST read between the lines. What goes unsaid and assumed can be critical. I have learned not to set my expectations too high, sight unseen, and have a positive attitude. However, the Menehune was excellent! Mahalo, RichardDid you find this review helpful? This was one of our favorite places. It is so very clean, quiet and comfortable I would have liked to spend more time there. Five days just was not enough! The owner was great to correspond with answering promptly. Volcano National Park is a very short drive away and Hilo is not far. The owner has provided info for everything you may need, this was so helpful. The carport was a real bonus. Plan on several days to check out the surrounding area hiking, sites or the orchid farm. Have a great stay, we sure did. If you are looking for a quiet get away, this is it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Menehune Mansion. It was spotlessly clean, well appointed, quiet, comfortable, and situated in a nice, tropical location. We were able to drive to the Volcano National Park easily and quickly from the cottage, and the drive to and from Hilo was pleasant as well. The owners were very nice and helpful to work with. We would highly recommend the cottage to others.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I can not say enough great stuff about this place. It was amazingly clean, in fact no where else we stayed was as spotless as this place upon arrival. I am extremely ocd about taking bathes in tubs I haven''t cleaned, but I forgot my tub cleaner so I was resign to not having a relaxing bath on the trip. I found tub cleaner under the sink, but the place was SO clean I felt no need to reclean it. This NEVER happens. I walked around barefoot with no qualms what-so-ever. Very good location for Volcanos National Park, literally 2 minutes away. Close to all Volcano dining. The guest book is spot on with her suggestions concerning area resturants. They have thought of everything that should reasonably be supplied: coffee, teas, creamer, sugar, butter. They even have umbrella, as it rains frequently in that area (not for long, so don't let that turn you off of visiting this part of the island. Usually only a few minutes while we were there.) I seriously cannot think of anything bad to say about this place. After we had left to go to Kona, we contacted Leslie to inquire if I had left my glases there. She had to contact the housekeeper to ask her and still got back to me in les than a half hour. I have every intention of going back to the Big Island in a couple years and I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. I would say if you found anything wrong with this place, your problem is you, not this cottage or it's owners. After looking at the bottom and who I would recommend this property for, I feel if you aren't disabled to the point where you couldn't see the local attractions and aren't traveling alone this place would totally be ok for you. I hope that makes sense. I guess I would say even if you are wheelchair bound, if you have someone to carry your bags in and possibly help you in and out of the tub you should be ok. If you have any questions, contact Leslie, she is awesome about emailing back promptly!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
