Krakow (Cracow) apartment description
Cosy style with modern accents. The apartment features 6 areas/rooms and features exposed pine beams. There is a tub to relax in, with wood shutters adjustable to let the sunlight play on the bubbles. The kitchen is equipped to enjoy fresh produce from the market. The eating area, kitchen, and bathroom are tiled, and areas you are likely to linger have radiant heat. The eating area lies at the heart of the apartment.
The living room is more intimate, has antique wood flooring covered by a rug, seasonal oil paintings, a writing/art desk, large antique (storage) cupboard, antique table and sofa which
unfolds into a double bed. It has a space heater for the cooler weather and a chair and ottoman for reading. The bedroom and sitting room have argon insulated street windows to reduce street noise. Krakow is a vibrant city, and it can be noisy at any
hour. Use earplugs for extra quiet.
The apartment is sized and divided into rooms to work for 2 people who like their own space. It is bigger (51m square) than the 5 star hotels suites, and has a sun balcony (30 square
It will fit 4, but you will have less space to enjoy.
I hold a large refundable deposit because of the art. Original Polish art, acquired from the Space Gallery one street north.
Much of Polands art has been stolen over the centuries as the country has been ransacked by invading armies. That is why we are covetous of the art. The apartment contains antique, modern art and sculpture. Feel free to use the art supplies in the writing desk.
It's designed to have a bath. A handy shelf under the window is for books, newspapers, shampoo etc. Sit in the bath for a shower. Enjoy the heated floor when its cold outside, and the cool tile on your feet when its hot. There is a heated towel rack. The building behind ours has views into the bathroom, that is why there are shutters.
If you wish, you can borrow a cell phone, and Mat will help you install your own sim chip or you can buy one 50m from the street door. Useful for getting the most reasonable cabs to the door, and some restaurant reservations. Best to go to the ticket offices of the Symphony or Opera.
Walk in closet. Concept is containment. Suitcases and stuff in one place, you can unpack and organise without being surrounded by clutter. The mirror is designed for makeup application. Maybe treat yourself to free make up lessons at the Mac store. There are scales to weigh your luggage as you leave.
The the rest of the apartment is space you can enjoy.
Heating and cooling
The apartment is heated by space heaters timed to come on when electricity is economical. Under tile radiant heating will keep your feet as warm as the rest of you, so you can walk around bear foot and get a real feel of the place.
There is no ac, but the buildings walls are 4 feet thick. Building restrictions don't allow us to perforate the ancient walls. Fresh air and evaporative cooling need moving air. The windows on either side of the apartment allow you to regulate the airflow, as they open to 6 positions. Mat or Victor will show you how to operate
The building is a listed Polish building. It was built in the fourteenth century (ie around 1390s). The cellar, walls of the entry hall, and walls of our apartment are all from this time.
From the fifteenth century (1400s) are the vault over the cellar and the north window in the cellar. The house belonged to the shoemakers guild from 1584 to 1850. Plumbing and toilets arrived in 1907, about 500 years after it was built!
Is functional and aesthetic. Please cut on a cutting board to preserve the butcher block counter tops. Dry clothes on a rack in the kitchen or on the deck. Iron in the closet.
Noise in the apartment
Above are quiet neighbours. Below is a quiet wine bar. You may hear food preparation noise through the bedroom wall in the morning. Road noise from passing vehicles and weekend yougsters. Krakow is a city famed for its night life.
The apartment has an Israeli security door, second in impenetrabilty to doors on banks, a full alarm system, and security glass on the deck side of the house. There is a panic button on a remote that allerts a security team. If the alarm is activated a private security firm arrive in under 2 minutes. There is a safe for your cherished possessions, that will hold a laptop.
The alarm. You need to know how to use it. It protects you and the apartment contents. As you open the door it bleeps to remind you to set or disarm it. The exterior of the building is not upgraded. There is no doorman. The street door is kept un-locked for fire-escape.
You can't smoke in the apartment or common areas of the building. Public buildings have designated smoking areas.
A post holiday right is showng off a tan when you go home. The sun deck is for the sun restricted, and gets good southerly exposure.
Tv and iPad2
I am assuming you are not coming to Krakow for the tv. We have one, and can hook it up for you. But the channel selection is poor, and limited by someone elsechoosing what to air.
An iPad2 is available with a separate deposit.

- Krakow is a rare city. It was built around a central square. The apartment is one block from this square. We have enjoyed staying here twice a year since 2004. In summer it is full of tourists. In Winter you can still sight see, as you are in the middle of Krakow. We have compiled a book of our favorite finds akin to the Michelin guide exclusively for your use. This way you can get the best of our finds and build on this adventure with finds of your own. The Government keeps the Old Town well patrolled with Police and Security personnel. The Royal Mile walk, St Mary's Cathedral, 2 central art galleries and multiple churches add to the cultural experience....moreless

Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Husband and wife, Ian and Ewa. She is American born in Poland, he is British. Both live and work in the North Californian wine country. We travel once or twice a year to Krakow, to enjoy a cultured but inexpensive lifestyle. We also have a ski condo in Squaw Valley, CA vrbo listing #391594.
Why the Owner Chose Krakow (Cracow):
You are right in the middle of the middle of Krakow. Krakow is the most energizing place I have visited. It offers pleasures unavailable in many big cities. For example, the farmer's market has foods hard to get such as wild forrest mushrooms and strawberries, fresh churned butter and unpasteurized fresh milk. All the local produce is of the highest standard, as Poland is still largely a country where strip farming is practiced. Wages here are low, which means culture is cheap $30 for quality opera or symphony tickets.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
FRESH PRODUCE. Go to the farmers market every morning early. We'll tell you where to get the best bread, vegetables, heirloom tomatoes etc. Best Polish cake shop is a block from the apartment. ENERGY I noticed how little sleep I need, so I can enjoy more of Krakow's culture. There is a "Chokra stone" in the Old Castle. Go lean against a specific wall in Wavel, and see what happens... CULTURE You are a block away from the main square, where cultural events happen most of the year. There is music, symphony, opera, jazz, a world famous violinist Nigel Kennedy lives here. The National Polish art gallery (see Boznanska), one of the oldest Universities (Jagellonian) in Europe, 20 plus churches and St Mary's cathedral (in Old Town), Wavel castle and its dragon. Events are continuos through the year. Visit the central Tourist Info (1 block) and buy Karnet a book with a full listing of each months events.
