We stayed at this terrific lodge for the Empire State Winter Games. Our group consisted of one coach, four teenage Alpine ski racers and six additional parent-spectators. We had plenty of room- the two sleeping wings of the house worked out great. . There are many places to stay in Lake Placid, but if you are on this site considering the Descente Lodge go ahead and book it! You won't be disappointed. I will first start with compliments of the Lodge's manager, Dawson. He was very helpful and extremely easy to communicate with-making our stay a great one right from the booking. He sent me a floor plan and went over travel directions, which are very easy even if you are a Lake Placid first timer. We ski race every year in Lake Placid and I will say, that we found the best place this year- Descente Lodge. Our stay included a noreaster with about 16" of snow, and the driveway was kept plowed throughout the storm. It is a very quick drive- 6 miles to the mountain, which is great for those coming to ski. The town( Lake Placid) is even a bit closer- only 3 miles. The lodge was comfortable, clean and spacious, with lots of character and history. We loved it and we had a great stay.Thank you Dawson and your family for sharing this great family lodge with others.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: Jane, thank you for your very favorable review. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Hope to work with you again in the future. Once again, thank you. Dawson

DeScente Lodge was a great location for a weekend ski vacation for our group of 20 grad students. Plenty of beds and room for extra air mattresses and cots. Close to downtown Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. Pictures don't do the house justice, we were amazed with the interior and exterior. Plenty of firewood for the fireplaces and outdoor fire pit. Everything you could need for kitchen was included. Dawson was always responsive to questions and concerns and was extremely easy to work with. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

Our experience at Descente Lodge was fantastic!!! the huge fireplace, excellently stocked kitchen and very spacious sleeping accomodations fit our group perfectly! We had about 18 adults and 4 small children!!! The hill in the back made an excellent sliding location :) Nice and close to both downtown, the Olympic sites and Whiteface Mountain!Recommended for: Families with young children.

Group of 11 up in Lake Placid for (unfortunately) one evening after Ragnar Relay ADK - we needed a comfortable place to stay and relax after the race and I'm lucky that we came across this gem. The house sleeps 11 in beds and more than that if you include the available cots. It's great for groups of mixed couples/singles if people are comfortable sharing bedspace/rooms. Would we stay here again? Absolutely. The house was spacious, comfortable and had a great layout that allowed for people to crash early without noise/disruption while others could stay up later hanging out. The stove and oven looked incredible, if we had cooked at home we would have had such a great meal! Having the washer dryer was AMAZING. The house was a little tricky to find, but we managed it based on verbal directions from the owner. Having some type of map drawn out and/or emailed to us prior would have been nice but definitely not a deal breaker - just make sure you ask for detailed directions if you aren't familiar with the area! Also - the lodge is named, so ask for that too. After our stay we all came back to NYC talking about plans to go back to Lake Placid and turn our cell phones off for a week! Ah.. relaxation. The owner, Dawson, is fantastic. Genuinely interested in making sure that you have a wonderful time in Lake Placid and willing to help however possible. I would definitely recommend staying here.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

My wife and I stayed at this property with our extended family to enjoy the beauty of nature. The house is in a nice secluded area adjacent to the Ausable River and also rather close to the center of town. There is plenty of room in the house to hang out with the family and enjoy each other and maybe a few cocktails. The highlight of my stay was the "epic" trout fly-fishing on the river. My brother-in-law and I caught about 50 Brook Trout that weekend right down the street from the house. The owners were a joy to deal with. It was an amazing time and I recommend this house to anyone that enjoys outdoor activities or just relaxing and reading a good book. Enjoy!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.

This is a great location to gather a group of friends, relax and have a great time. We had a large group who was looking for a weekend of R&R, and the house was the perfect way to ensure it! The house is absolutely beautiful. The kitchen is wonderful, fully stocked with all necessary pots and pans, and very modern, letting our group cook up some fantastic meals. The dining room was a wonderful size for having a large group feast as well! The newly renovated bathrooms were a great plus. You can not beat the proximity to both the Lake Placid village and the ski lifts. I would definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We had 3 families and a total of 12 people with kids from ages 4-12 and this place was PERFECT! The kitchen was very spacious and the new large cooktop and oven were ideal for cooking some wonderful meals. The 3 full baths were newly remodeled and were a nice touch, especially for three families. The living area was very spacious and the multiple fireplaces and a large dining room table made it ideal for meals and general entertaining. There is a foosball table that was the scene of several big tournaments between the men and some great games with the kids. The location is ideal. It is halfway between Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain (each being a 5 min drive). There was a large circular drive that offered easy parking and it felt like home. Just perfect. We would love to use this place again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children.

We were a group of 15 (age 23-38) and we spend 5 days - 28 Dec 2011 to 2 Jan 2012. All I can say is: This property is amazing! It is right between the town of Lake Placid (10 min) and the ski slopes of White Face(10 min). The house has 5 cozy bedrooms + 1 extremely private in the small house on the side (10 feet away). It was much more spacious than we expected. It has a huge kitchen with a table for 8-10 and an amazing brand new Italian professional oven range. It has a dining room with a table that can fit 16 and a very cozy living room with 2 couches and 4 recliners + satellite TV. Overall the house is very classy - a lot of wood on the walls and the ceilings, very big windows in the living room, 3 fireplaces etc. There is both electric baseboard heating and hot air heating with thermostats in nearly every room - even in the bathrooms. I guess this is great if the main furnace fails for some reason, you are still going to be fine with the electric heating. Even at 0 degrees outside (as we had for 2 nights) inside it was extremely warm. The entrance of the house was especially comfortable for the skiers of our group, since you enter a separate carpeted room, where you can drop your skis and change your boots. There is a music center with speakers in both the living and the dining room. The speakers are a little bit old, but still pretty loud. There is also an old-school foosball table that provide a lot of fun for some of us. The property is very private and it has a huge yard. We were very happy to find a bunch of nice sleds in the shed next to the house and had a lot of fun on the slightly inclined driveway. One more thing. In the master bedroom's closets, we found four additional foldable beds, which is great if your party is larger. The one thing that really sets this house apart of everything that we have experienced so far (we have been renting houses mostly in Maine for 7-8 years) is the fact that the lines and unending supply of fresh towels were provided. I forgot to mention that the mattresses in every single bedroom were brand new. Amazing! It is definitely a skiers paradise! We enjoyed it so much. Thank you!Recommended for: Adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so happy that you enjoyed yourselves even thought the skiing conditions were somewhat less than great! It just proves what a wonderful place Lake Placid really is to visit. There's always something to do and if you just want to relax than DeScente Lodge is the place for you.

About the owner: I am the nephew of the owners of this property and am managing the rental of the Descente Lodge. Our family has spent many fun filled weeks at DeScente Lodge with our cousins over the past twenty five years, enjoying the wonderful ambiance of the Lake Placid area. DeScente Lodge was the residence for the Japanese Olympic delegation during the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Brazill family from New Jersey bought the lodge after the Olympics and have spent many Christmas and summer vacations there with their 8 children and grandchildren since that time.
Why the Owner Chose Lake Placid:
DeScente Lodge is a perfect spot for a vacation any time of the year. Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort is a 7 minute drive, Lake Placid Village is a 5 minute drive, and there is great hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, golfing, shopping, dining, within 10 minutes of the Lodge. The lodge offers the privacy of a country hideaway, yet is within minutes of everything the Adirondack Mountains have to offer. Riverside Drive is the route used by many athletes for their daily training; it's a great road to bike, walk or jog. Just get up in the morning and do your workout on the road outside your door.
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
DeScente Lodge is a perfect place to spend a long weekend or full week with a group of people who love to hang out together at the house or go different ways during the day and meet back at the house in the evening to share drinks, dinner and stories of that day's mountain climbing, golf , boating, or shopping adventures!
