Live a little bit of history in an authentic Spanish Revival Santa Barbara Mission Hacienda
Recreated in loving detail, this Tuscan finished retreat is nestled in the hills above Old Town San Diego, just above famous Presidio Park. Considered the most exclusive part of Mission Hills, the home sits within the walls of exquisite gardens, water features & sculptures that will take your breath away.
Five outside decks offer 360 degree views of La Jolla, Mission Beach, Point Loma, Presidio Park and beautiful homes and gardens. Privacy is offered in every niche, but the estate was designed to entertain. Seven sets of doors open to patios, Zen fountains, Pergolas and porches brimming with plants and flowers. Flat screen T.V.s, Wifi and a full house sound system make lonely nights virtually impossible. Put in large logs in the giant fireplace or enjoy the ambiance of a log lighter as its flames reflect off of the thousands of pounds of Chinese yellow limestone with its Celtic engraved façade.
A whole house water filtration system, gourmet kitchen amenities and appliances, the absence of carpet coupled with a built-in vacuum system assure a healthy environment and experience. Literally minutes from San Diego’s best restaurants and tourist attractions (See list below), the ease of finding and getting to them is a one of the best features of this venue. Like to cook? Pick fresh from the garden where up to 45 different fruits and vegetables grow and need to be harvested regularly. Want to experience what a real tomato or artichoke tastes like? Herbs and 10 different lettuces spruce up any meal. Figs, plums and grapes never tasted like this. Broccoli, cauliflower, beets, peppers and Swiss chard all grow abundantly.
Three bedrooms & 3 ½ superbly appointed baths make up the 3200 square feet of living space. One bedroom converts to an office with a private entrance for the busy exec who can’t stay off of the computer or needs to stay in touch. A short walk to Old Town or to the trolley puts you into the downtown Gas Lamp area, Balboa Park , Petco Park or the stadium to catch the Chargers. A three and ½ minute drive gets you to the main freeways or to the beach or Sea world.
Over 100 golf courses are minutes away, including the world famous Torry Pines course where Tiger won his last Open.

Dear Michael M., We are always pleased to hear such kind words from our guests. We especially appreciate your comments on the unique character of the Hacienda. We worked hard to achieve that & it is with gratitude to hear it expressed. I cannot accept your comments without mentioning the fastidious care that you & your group took of the Hacienda. It is rare that our housekeepers mention how 'clean' the Hacienda was when they arrived. We thank you for taking such good care of our family home.Did you find this review helpful? My family and I had the pleasure of staying at the Hartwell Hacienda at the end of July. This was our first experience with a vacation rental, but after the wonderful experiece we had on this trip, it definitely will not be our last. From the moment we inquired about the property, Wally and Frankie made us feel at ease, and put to rest any reservations we may have had about staying in someone else's home. Once we arrived at the Hacienda, we were shown around the grounds by a neighbor, as the Hartwells were away visiting family. For the next three days, we found ourselves in constant amazement as to how much character has been bult into this home. The photos do not begin to convey the beauty of this home. The upstairs balconies provided wonderful views of the bay and we were also able to watch the Sea World fireworks from them. The gourmet kitchen was used extensively, and it was great having breakfast out in the garden. The house is just minutes away from all of the major local attractions, which made it easy for us to enjoy multiple days at Sea world, and also find time for the Zoo and Wild Animal Park. We had a great time and would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and relatives. Thanks again Frankie and Wally!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

What a wonderful time we had in this gorgeous house! It was so much more than the photos suggested! the surrounding gardens and sitting areas were beautiful. My daughter and I loved picking fresh lettuce, swiss chard and beets from the garden for our Easter dinner. Oh! and the egg hunt! The grounds were perfect for the Easter Bunny to hide his eggs. We loved cooking in the fully stocked gourmet kitchen and the proximity to Old Town and to Seaworld was fantastic! We can't wait to come back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: The fact that the Easter bunny came back was great news to us. Sixteen of our grand kids ran into the Easter Bunny more times than I can count. We are so glad that you took your valuable visiting time to enjoy our gardens. I can promise you that your four year old will appreciate that experience in the final analysis more than Sea World or the Zoo. We hope to see you again soon. All our love, Wally&Frankie

We could not have asked for more! Beautifully furnished, very comfortable with wonderful gardens at every turn. Wally and Frankie were very accommodating hosts and helped to make our family getaway to San Diego a memorable occasion. The gourmet kitchen is amazing and our hosts allowed us to include wonderful fresh lettuce and herbs from their garden for our meals. If you are looking for a special place to stay that's conveniently located to all that San Diego has to offer this is it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. Our cleaning crew thought that someone had done their job after you left. I told them that you were just very special guests. The fact that you had a great time is incidental to the more important element: we now have some good friends from Redondo Beach. Come see us again. Wally&Frankie

Wally and Frankie, all we can say is "Wow!!" after spending a perfect 4-night getaway at your gorgeous home. Your photos online do not even come close to showing how luxurious and striking the accommodations are. We took dozens of photos to show friends -- every room was a jaw-dropper. Our group of six LOVED cooking in your amazing kitchen (so well stocked for rental guests) and we ate practically every meal in the garden or on the deck. We also loved the total privacy of our bedrooms as well as the many spaces to relax alone or enjoy the group. The gardens are magnificent -- a true Home and Gardens experience both inside and out. This was better than a 5-star hotel for sure. Thanks for thinking of every detail to make our stay so perfect. We will be back! We recently stayed at this home over the Christmas week and we loved every minute of the time we spent there. Our expectations were high, as it was our first time to San Diego and it was also Christmas, but all our expectations were not only met but it was better than we had imagined! The house is gorgeous, the pictures can not capture the feeling you get in this home. The location was superb, we woke up each morning to beautiful San Diego weather and the most amazing views! We were able to walk everywhere and the quiet coldesac is perfect for relaxing on many of the garden decks, patios and balconys. The owner went out of his way to help us with every detail and made sure we were happy with everything, He was very helpful and gave us our deposit back promptly, he was very professional and friendly at the same time. We will definately be back to enjoy this home again and would recommend to anyone wanting to stay in San Diego, the location and home are hard to beat! One of the best experiences we have ever had renting a home. This home had all the amenities and we were amazed at how nice the home was, it was a treat to have had the pleasure of staying here!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+.
