UPDATE: Condo renovation now complete! our first guests check-in Dec 19 2011. Photos coming up soon!
Unit 4B of Maui Sands is a DIRECT OCEAN FRONT unit on the ground floor of a two story building only 10 feet from the ocean. 25 feet to the right are the steps down to enter the ocean. It's a 2 Bedroom unit with a king size bed in one bedroom & two twin beds in the other bedroom. Plenty of seating in the living room with two couches (one sofa sleeper) and a massage chair. The condo comfortably sleeps 6.
Your parking spot is free & there are no resort fees. Our unit is extremely private. Don't expect to see anyone walking in front of your 180 Degree view of the ocean during your whole trip! (except maybe walking/swimming farther down in the ocean).
We have just completed a $150,000 renovation!
We thought long & hard about how to make our condo a model for others to follow in terms of being as environmentally responsible & healthy as possible. We wanted to address issues like the poor recycling program on Maui, the poor quality of the drinking water, the inefficiencies of general appliances & electronics, indoor air pollution, the use of the Hawaiian trade winds for cooling & many other aspects of a home.
Here are some of the things we did:
- We provided organic cotton bed sheets, towels, pillows & linens since conventional cotton is a very pesticide & herbicide intensive crop. For example: It takes one-quarter of a pound of chemicals to produce one conventional cotton T-shirt.
- Zero VOC paint (Volatile Organic Compounds = airborne carcinogens) was used on 97% of the walls. This was to help insure the indoor air quality was of the highest standards. This was especially important to us since we have a 2 year old son and one on the way!
- All tile flooring (no vinyl, linoleum, carpets). This also eliminates off gassing and trapped dirt and dust from collecting anywhere.
- We installed a reverse osmosis crystal clear water purifier for drinking & cooking. So there's no need to buy bottled water and that saves you money, and the environment!
- We have Teflon free (carcinogenic) pots & pans. Ours are quality stainless steel and we even have a cast iron fry pan. If you are not sure how to use it, let us know!
- We supply only glass tuperware instead of plastic tuperware. FYI: Plastics can leach chemicals like BPA into your food when you store them.
- An abundant use of Bamboo in the construction & finishing instead of wood products where possible. Bamboo is a grass & not a product derived from forestry. It has a short growth cycle of approximately five years, depending on the variety. As a result, bamboo is considered a highly renewable & sustainable product that saves our ever-dwindling hardwood forests.
- We've added louvre shutters above bedroom doors to allow air flow while maintaining privacy which cuts down on the need to use air conditioning & fans (although we have fans in the bedrooms). Another bonus is you can have the sound of the waves lull you to sleep while your bedroom door is closed.
- Use of the latest technology of energy efficient lights like LED dimmable lights.
- Emerson's 'Midway Eco' Fans in the living room & dining room. These fans are the most energy efficient fans on the market! They use 75% less energy then a conventional ceiling fan.
- The most energy efficient stainless steel appliances. For example our fridge is a MayTag Tier 3 Eco-Conserve rated fridge. It uses less energy then a 60 watt light bulb! The stove comes with two ovens of different sizes so that you only heat the oven size you need! An added bonus of the two ovens is that it gives you the option to cook two different things at different temperatures at the same time.
- We have also consciously chose 16 sets of Correll dishes because of how well they stack in a dishwasher. This translates into saving energy by not having to run the dishwasher as often!
- Our LG brand LED TV wins the top spot for the most energy efficient Television over 50' (source: EnergyStar program).
- Integrated into the cabinets is a 4 bin recycling station for recycling aluminum, glass, plastics & cardboard.
- All our interior wood doors are FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council)
- We've had the plumber connect the reverse osmosis water purifier to the ice machine so that even your ice cubes are made from the purest water.
- The shower has a built in filter that removes chlorine.
- Our toaster? Well we looked far & wide for it: It only heats up one element when you are only toasting one slice of bread! Thus cutting energy use by 50% for these situations! Don't be fooled, your toaster at home does not do this simple concept.
Here's the incorporated technology:
- We have incorporated a 2nd beverage fridge into the kitchen in case you need the space.
- 55' LED Edge lit True High Definition (1080P) TV that up-converts any 2D video to 3D with amazing results! It comes with 4 pairs of 3D glasses so everyone can watch in 3D. Regular TV viewing works great to.
- High Definition DVR recorder (for pausing & recording live TV & your favorite shows) & over 20 hi-def channels
- Free local & long distance to anywhere in North America.
- Password protected wireless High speed Internet (10mbps). (There is also a public wireless internet service at the pool & elsewhere on the spacious grounds.)
- 3D capable Blu-Ray player
- Stereo & 5 speaker Dolby Digital surround sound in the ceiling for TV, Movies, CDs, iPod or MP3 player.
- Pandora Radio access let's you listen and create your favorite Radio stations through the Condo's 5 speaker sound system.
- Free NetFlix access: watch thousands of movies in Hi-Def for free! YouTube, Hulu & other Internet video stations are also available.
- A nice massage chair to relax your soothing muscles after a long day of sight seeing or surfing at the beach!

My husband, teenage daughter, boyfriend and myse just returned from spending 8 glorious days at this unit. From booking the reservation to checking out, Ryan (the owner) was extremely prompt in returning emails, answering questions and making sure we were informed about everything we needed to know about our stay. Upon stepping into the unit on the first afternoon we arrived we were thrilled to see that the photos on the website are exactly what the unit looks like. The view is direct oceanfront, literally 10 feet to the seawall and the ocean beyond. Also, being in a ground unit is very convenient. The condo itself is updated and has a very nice kitchen, bathroom and half bathroom, nice tile floors and great outdoor furniture on the lanai. The only drawback would be the size of the bedrooms (they are small) but since all we did was sleep in them, they were adequate. The bedrooms are at the back of the house, away from the ocean, but we could distinctly hear the waves crashing all night long; very relaxing way to fall asleep. The little extras like boogie boards, snorkel gear, beach chairs, umbrella, towels, cooler, etc. all helped to make beach days quite easy and affordable. The purified water system allowed us to refill our water containers each day and save a lot of money by not having to purchase bottled water. We spent most nights at the condo cooking dinner and watching the sunset. We also watched movies on Ryan's awesome T.V. and listened to music frequently on our Ipods on the awesome sound system. The condo is tasteful, updated and confortable - perfect for four people. With the 1/2 bathroom, even though we had to share the shower there were two areas to get ready in which made it doable. The location of this condo, in my opinion, was perfect. We could go one direction and be in Napiili or the other and be in Kaanapali or Lahaina, all within 10-15 minutes. The grocery store, Farmer's Market, and other shops nearby were within walking distance. My husband and I spent many mornings walking the beach walk located only a couple blocks from the condo. Maui Sands IS an older complex and the pool, pool furniture and laundry facilities are quite outdated but the mature grounds and beautiful landscaping are awesome. Plus, having an older complex meant we were that much closer to the ocean! Overall, this condo was exactly as described and in a perfect location. We'd love to rent it again in the future and I highly recommend this gem in Maui.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We were so pleased in every way! The condo was so well stocked with all we might need. Loved the terrific snorkels and masks, the great stash of spices (dried and fresh), towels, soaps, cutlery, any and all cooking utensils, the "Best Of" guides. And your remodel/updating was really nice. So comfortable. We can't thank you enough for opening up your vacation home for us to enjoy. So much so that it's possibly planted the seed of us looking for a place in Maui Sands of our own! Merely a wish at this point. The boys are ready to make it an annual trek. Our nine year old has even offered to save his allowance ($3 a week) to help make it happen. It's the thought that counts. MAHALO many times over!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This property is awesome and it exceeded our expectations! I’m a travel agent (have been for 10+ years) and consider myself very picky. I looked at tons of condos to rent before I decided on this one. Not only did the condo look exactly like the pictures ,they have thought of every detail. Every detail! Ryan was a joy to work with and emailed me right back with any questions I had. Rarely do I ever stay at the same place (because I like to mix it up and stay where I have not stayed before) . But I will for sure be booking this property again, and again (anytime I travel to Maui). I would highly recommend this condo to any of my client’s, friends, and family. Thank you Ryan for the use of your lovely condo we had an amazing time and the location could not be more perfect. I’m already missing it – wish I could be back there now! Aloha, I have stayed at this condo from 8/18/12 for 5 nights with my parents and sister. I had a wonderful stay and wants to share my review with other travelers. After arriving at the property, I initially thought this was a nice little two story condo complex, but nothing too luxurious. However, after entering our condo I was amazed by the amenities inside. The first thing I noticed was the state of the art entertainment system. The 55 inch LG 3d TV and the five speaker Sony surround system with IPod dock capability were superb. The detailed instructions in the guide book made everything very easy to use. Next, the kitchen appliances were all very modern and up to date. It was just a very nice kitchen overall. Finally we get to the patio and the spectacular views of the ocean. The sunsets from the condo were quite picturesque. The ocean in front of the condo was a little nice spot for snorkeling and you were able to see many different kinds of fish. The property owner was nice enough to provide 4 snorkeling masks as well. In closing, I felt he has thought of everything to provide my family and I a very comfortable stay in this condo. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is looking for a place to stay on the west side of Maui. I know this will be the only place I ever stay at whenever I return to Maui!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We had a very nice 10 day stay at Maui Sands. The condo has recently been completely remodeled inside and was tastefully decorated, very clean and well equipped for our family of 5. We loved the view out our back door of Molokai and the beautiful sunsets every night and I especially loved that I could be in the kitchen and enjoy the view. Our kids loved that they could step out the back door and were steps from the ocean. The tide pools are great to explore early in the morning and it is an enjoyable walk to the Ka'anpali beaches. The condo is also an easy drive to Lahaina and Napili. The cell and wi-fi service are excellent and entertainment system and TV were also great. We found the description and photos on the VRBO site were accurate. Maui Sands is an older condo development, however we loved the fact that it had wide open spaces and enjoyed all the birds and frogs came out night. It is also very quiet and feels much more homelike that a big resort. The owner was very easy to work with and responsive to questions. There are several fun restaurants within walking distance and a large Times Market that you can also walk to. The farmers market across the street Monday-Wednesday Friday mornings is also worth a visit or two. Overall we had a wonderful vacation and loved this condo and will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Maui.Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My family and I were staying at Maui Sands, Unit 4B, for 5 nights from 8/18/12 to 8/23/12. We had a wonderful stay at this property and definitely would recommend this property to our family and friends. The owner is very helpful and professional; he also cares deeply about the environment. The description of this unit on VRBO website is very accurate. Maui Sands is a two-story building and this unit is on the ground level with two bedrooms and 1.5 bath. This condo is clean and modern yet charming. It's fully furnished with the best equipments especially the entertainment center. My college age children think the condo is very cool and one of the kinds. We really enjoyed the ocean front and view from the lanai. Personally, I felt relaxing and peaceful when looking out to the ocean every morning and when returning to the condo in the evening to watch the amazing sunset. We have been to Maui three times; by far, this was the best trip. It's because our children are older now but also because this condo was so comfortable. Ryan, thank you for providing a wonderful place for our vacation and hopefully it'll still be the same for our next visit.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Hello Ryan, we found out about Maui Sands years ago and fell in love with the place back then, pretty much we were satisfied just having the ocean front views; now after discovering your place it was like being in a penthouse not only do we have the great ocean front views but all the wonderful comfort amenities and more. Having the parking on the other side of the condo allows you to walk through the lovely garden area. Upon entering using the touch pad and walking into the tastefully decorated condo it gives you a sense that you have arrived. We became quite familiar with all the amenities in a short time thanks to your guides and settled in. Morning was our favorite time, we tuned in "IZ" on Pandora while having our breakfast on the lanai soooo relaxing. Having all the necessities to prepare meals in the kitchen accented by the different lighting levels complementing the well chosen colors and materials was inviting. As they say its the small things that make the difference and yes the grocery cart worked on so many different occasions, the beach chairs and umbrella are wonderful accessories that add that special touch. It has if nothing was overlooked making our stay the WOW FACTOR! Anyone thinking of visiting maui to enjoy the low key laid back style you will have that and more while staying at the Maui Sands 4bRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Aloha Ryan Thank you so much for providing us with a wonderful place to stay. The view was breath-taking, the access to the beach, the perfectly positioned Lanai, the best equipped and beautiful kitchen (with a view), the dining area (with a view), and did I mention the “WOW VIEW” The Condo was Beautiful recently remodeled, right on the ocean. The condo was equipped with many thoughtful items (so easy to use and enjoy), the bathrooms (ah that wonderful rain shower head), and comfortable beds! I really appreciated things like the hugh tub to store our snorkel equipment, filtered water, pegs and towel racks for drying wet suits and towels. I especially loved the grocery cart, and the (ahhhh) message chair. The fruit basket was so welcoming. It was great to have fully equipped kitchen nicely stocked with condiments and soap, even extra beach towels. We enjoyed Netflix and the Wi-fi internet connection. Access to the condo was easy and in an excellent central location with nearby stores, and several restaurants. Great instructions on how use the equipment, ice maker and tips like backing up into the parking location. We had a great time and had everything we needed. One tip you didn’t mention to us and we had to find out by ourselves was that the snorkeling was good right out back and that the green turtles come by most evenings to feed. This unit at Maui Sands is a jaw-dropper and my fave Maui accommodation to date. The walk out lanai stretches the width of the unit providing a spectacular view of the blue ocean, big sky and Molokai in the distance. I'd have my morning yoga practice on the cool lanai floor and spend many hot afternoons lounging on the comfy chaise counting whales. I can't even tell you how many humpbacks I saw, males chasing females, breaches, fin slaps, mamas and calves. It was insanely exciting and so AWEsome (in the true sense of the word :). There were 6 of us (4 adults and 2 babies) and I never felt cramped. The lanai essentially extends the condo to the ocean. On low-tide, the water is kid friendly (mellow and shallow) up to the first reef and shaded until 11 am. The water in between the first and second reef is the next step up in terms of waves and great for long swims, snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding. In my opinion, crossing over the second reef into the open ocean should only be done at high tide because this barrier reef is a living reef and urchin inhabited. Reef shoes are useful for crossing the inner reef. We picked up our for $9 at the ABC store next door. Here’s what I thought were the Pros: Stunning beauty: ocean, whales, flowers, trees, oh my..., - Organic linens and other eco-minded touches, - Filtered water (without it, the water tastes like chlorine), - Lots of dining options, organic grocery store and farmer's market a short walk away . - Long oceanfront board walk a short walk away great for strolling, running (and even running with a stroller). - Cons? Plastic coffee maker. A stainless steel Moka Pot/stovetop espresso maker would be amazing! - White lanai floor gets dirty fast which can be problematic if you are vacationing with uber tidy friends or family (as I was :). - The loudness of the ocean initially freaked me out the first night. I think there was a winter storm swell going on - but I became used to it by the second night - I guess I could have closed the windows too.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: I have a 1 bedroom place in Kihei which I bought in 2007 (kiheivacationcondo dot net) and have lived there during the winter months until this year. I bought a 2 bedroom in Maui Sands in spring 2011 (It was clear with my growing family that I needed a larger place). I am a web developer and philanthropist and try to do my part to make the world a better place. I enjoy renting out our Hawaii home when we are off island so that other like-minded individuals can also experience an amazing part of the world while minimizing their carbon footprint.
Why the Owner Chose Honokowai:
After a very intensive search, we decided on Maui Sands. Here are 6 of many reasons:
1. The consistent trade winds blow from the Northeast so we wanted to stay upwind from the sewage treatment plants so that our air remained the freshest and cleanest in the world. Sorry Kaanapali!
2. The Kahekili Fish reserve is directly in front of Maui Sands. This results in an abundance of marine life and a restriction on certain fishing. The reserve ends a hundred yards to the north, so places like Kahana, Napili and Kapalua do not have this feature.
3. There is a kids playground with a new jungle gym 100 yards north of Maui Sands. This is a big hit with young families and my son. Access can be via the water, or the road from our condo.
4. There is a health food store (the only one in West Maui) only 150 yards north of us. It hosts a farmers market 3 times a week and is a great source for local produce and organic foods. Another option for groceries is the Times Market, a standard grocery store that is 400 yards south of us. There are lots of shops, restaurants and gear rental stores, all within walking distance.
5. Maui Sands is one of the original condos in all of West Maui and it has retained a lot of the old Hawaii feel of the 60's before the hotel boom. Maui Sands have a very low density of condos in its spacious grounds and combining that with the mature landscaping, old palm trees, vintage signs and rustic seawall, it certainly takes you back in time to an old Hawaiian experience.
6. Maui Sands has a very unique reef system which some argue has the most child-friendly calm waters of all of West Maui. There's a beach nick-named baby beach in Lahaina, that is popular with families because of the protected waters. It's water quality is quite poor however and pales in comparison to the crystal clear waters of Maui Sands. Please note: during high surf/swell situations, none of the Hawaiian waters escape the wrath of the Ocean.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Maui Sands and our neighbour complex North of us are the last of the condos that can access the 1.5 mile long North Kaanapali Beach and Black Rock beyond by walking along the shoreline. If you like going for long walks in your bare feet, then Maui Sands is a good choice.
Maui Sands was built before there were any setback rules for buildings. As a result, having a condo within 12 feet of the ocean where you can feel the vibration of the surf from the lanai is a very rare and surreal experience. We enjoy being so close to the ocean that we can experience it with all our senses yet still be shielded from harm with the 8ft sea wall.
