This was our first time in San Francisco and what a lovely home to stay in. All the conveniences of home with a private back yard with a deck for morning coffee. The neighborhood was beautiful and quiet. The bus is only 2 blocks away which takes you to any connecting trams or cable cars if needed. There is a cute little grocery store just around the corner. The Golden Gate Park is a short walk away past all sorts of eateries and shops. Michael was very accommodating and pleasant. Rent with confidence!

This was our first visit to San Francisco and what a perfect home and location we had. The back deck and private back yard is a must for your early morning coffee! The bus was just 2 blocks away which took us to all connecting cable cars and trams. There is a cute little grocery store just around the corner with everything you would need for your stay. The neighborhood is pretty, quiet and a easy walk to the beautiful Golden Gate Park. Michael was gracious and resolved a small issue we had immediately. Rent with confidence and enjoy your stay! This was our first trip to San Francisco. Loved every minute of our stay. The President Suite was very comfortable. Sat on the back deck for coffee every morning. Close to the bus system. Which brought you to the sub and trolly system. We got around no problem. There is also a cute little store a block away with all you need. Michael was helpful in all we needed. We had a slight problem and it was resolved immediately! I would recommend this house to anybody! Katherine and David

The listing on vrbo is quite accurate regarding the location of the "Golden Gate Palace". It is in the Inner Sunset neighborhood. What's great about this location is that it is very close (within 2-4 blocks) to several major mass-transit options. This made going around the city much easier than we thought. The photos are also very accurate, and the property is clean and well-maintained. The owner, Michael, is the nicest guy you will ever meet and he takes the time to show you not only little details about the property, but also has maps, information about the area, guide books, etc. available to you. There is a full kitchen, and a nice bathroom, which is connected to a shared foyer (the owners live upstairs), and then there is a beautiful bedroom with adjoining living room. The unit has been restored with wood paneling and hardwood floors throughout. There are two televisions, two fireplaces, and even an office with a computer, and of course wifi. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend/relative, and the price is beyond fair. Just a ways from here is the Golden Gate Park, including the DeYoung Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. A 20-30 minute ride on one of the many transit options will take you to almost any other neighborhood in the city. We went to the Ferry Building, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, The Castro, and The Mission all without a car. This is a really great location, and a nice quiet neighborhood. Just two blocks away is a great little grocery store/corner market, and a few more blocks away you will find Cafes, Bakeries, and many, many other good places for food.

Staying at the Golden Gate Guest Castle was a very nice experience. It's located on a very nice quiet street not far from the train, restaurants, and stores. The castle is an older home - the pictures are very accurate - very clean and spacious - except for the bathroom. The bathroom was the only downside - it's very small and you don't have a lot of room to store things (but there was plenty of hot water). There's a great little pizza shop, Milano's, the N train is within 2 blocks, and if you're there on Monday, the Blackthorn Tavern has trivia night. If you go to the grocery store - take some paper bags (there were some available in the kitchen) because bags will cost you 10 cents ;)). You should also go down to the beach to see the Sutro Bath ruins and have lunch at Cliff House (the waiters are great, they'll point out the whales or dolfins playing in the ocean) We enjoyed our stay - if you're looking for a taste of life as a resident, I highly recommend this place.

The accommodations were clean and attractive. Plenty of space and privacy. Back garden was a highlight. The apt. is very convenient to the N muni line and the heart of Inner Sunset at 9th Avenue and Judah/Irving was easy walking distance. Lots of interesting and affordable eating options there. The neighborhood is very residential and not "touristy" which gives you a good idea of what living in the Inner Sunset district is like. Michael, the owner, was very helpful and informative. I travel to San Francisco on business regularly, so I didn't need a lot of help, but there was a wealth of information available in the apt. and through Michael.

My husband was scheduled for surgery at UCSF. We needed a place to stay that was close to hospital and allowed us to recoop afterwards. This place was great! We were able to walk back and forth to hospital, rest up afterwards, and walk to get groceries or go out to eat. Very spacious, nice deck/backyard, and a great office space where I was able to keep up some with my work. And, Michael was a very gracious host!

The Golden Gate Guest Castle is a nice haven in a bustling city. The inner Sunset location is terrific with walking access to the Park, 100's of restaurants (try Manna & Lavash), and good transportation. Having a nice kitchen is a real bonus. We will be back.

We stayed here on our way to a destination further north and our only regret was that we did not get to stay longer. Our son lives in San Francisco so we will definitely be back to stay in this lovely place in the future. It is a true slice of life, staying in this home that is "true San Francisco style", in our opinions. The garden was an added plus, and again, we would have liked to spend some more time there, too. Michael was a gracious host, friendly and helpful beyond most.

We recently finished a 6 day stay at this wonderful and enjoyable rental apartment. The accommodations were very spacious and clean. The close location to Golden Gate Park and nearby MUNI transportation was an attractive feature for us. The owner, Michael, went out of his way to make us comfortable. His recommendations for nearby restaurants and grocery shopping were excellent. He was quick and very responsive with any inquires we had. The kitchen and bath are very nice, modern and clean. The kitchen has just about every convenience one needs. There is a wonderful back yard/Terrance that we enjoyed on occasion just sitting, drinking coffee ,and enjoying the beautiful scenery. It is a good value. We did not rent a car. However, If you rent a car, a parking permit is available for free. If we are every back in San Francisco, we would definitely stay there again. It was indeed a home away from home. Thanks Michael for making this a memorable vacation! Lydia and George Salazar, Katy Texas

We enjoyed our stay at the GG Castle. You cannot beat the price in comparison to hotels. Michael gave us a great tour of the house and explained all of its amenities as well as what is available in the city. It is a great location. We felt very safe walking around there. Everything you need is nearby. The transit is close, which allows you to get around the whole city. Once you purchase a map of the transit, its not too difficult to figure out how it works. The people are very helpful too. The kitchen is great!! It was nice having a separate sleeping area from our kids. The two rooms have a divider if you wish to use it, which we did. Thank you Michael.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Golden Gate Guest Castle. Michael greeted us upon our arrival and took the time to explain the different features of the suite and the various attractions that are in the area. The suite has lots of charm with its high ceilings, old furniture, renovated kitchen and a secluded back yard. It is located in a safe and quiet neighborhood not too far from shops, restaurants and Golden Gate Park. Thanks again Michael for your hospitality. Hope to see you soon. Luc & Diane

Michael was very helpful with the whole process, and accommodating when we had a very late (or early 4am) arrival. The space is well represented by the pictures. It has some charming details and finishes. The bed was uncomfortably soft but maybe that is just personal preference. The layout of the bedroom and living room is essentially a studio. There are curtains and sliding doors to separate the spaces but they are presented open because the main entrance is through the bedroom. Our only real concern was that there is a household hallway/entryway between the bedroom and kitchen/bathroom which means you have to get dressed in the middle of the night if you want to use the bathroom. That said, we only saw the owner (who lives upstairs) twice shortly before we left so ultimately it was private enough. It's a pity this unit isn't completely enclosed with a lockable door. Although the owners are obviously completely trustworthy, we tend to have expensive equipment and prefer to lock up our spaces when we are out. Overall the amenities were good, including a functional computer. The garden is really lovely. The space itself is bright with beautifully high ceilings. The location cannot be beaten - it's a lovely area and you can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the street. The street parking was fine during the day. You may have to park a block away at night. The parking permit provided was much appreciated. All in all we were happy with the stay, and enjoyed meeting Michael who is very friendly and funny.

I took my wife and my 4 year old son here for our wedding anniversary and we had an amazing time staying at this vacation rental. Upon arriving we were greeted by Michael who explained to us all the features of the vacation rental and gave us some great recommendations for some nearby restaurants and activities to do at Golden Gate Park with our son (we just had to drive around 4 blocks away from the vacation rental to get to the restaurant which was right next to theentrance to golden gate park! After eating some of the best sushi we have ever ate at Ebisu Sushi on 9th Avenue, we proceeded to the Academy of Sciences museum in the park and we had a lot of fun with our son (who had the best time ever their). After spending a full day exploring Golden Gate Park, we drove 4 blocks back up to the vacation rental and were ready to go to bed. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets smelled brand new. Anyway, we can't wait to come back to San Francisco and stay at Michael's vacation rental property again next year!!!! Thank you Michael, we will be back!!!

I would definitely recommend staying here. We visited as a family and had a very comfortable stay. Excellent location if you enjoy Golden Gate park, walking the city, and being part of a local neighborhood. One caution - if you need the computer/wi-fi check to make sure it's working. I think there were some computer issues which weren't important enough for us to pursue. That said, if it's important for you to have access double check.

Michael was very informative and gracious when we arrived. We stayed with our two young adult daughters who slept on the sofa bed. They were a bit uncomfortable because the bars at the bottom of the sofa bed would hit their back when lying down. I would recommend the bed more for younger children. The home was very clean and the kitchen modern. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home.

Owner response: I am sorry about the bars. We already fixed this after this alarming situation redundant of the the mattress by adding another mattress. Now our sofa has double mattress. Now my guests will have very comfy sofa bed to sleep in, after sight seeing of San Francisco. Please come over. We are ready for you. Thank you, Michael

We were very thankful to find this place and the price was the best and lowest we could find in San Francisco on vrbo. The kitchen and gardens are to die for. Everything is amazing, including the owner who is very helpful and very kind. We rented a car but ended up not needing it as public transportation is everywhere. My husband and I had an enjoyable stay here for the long weekend over New Year's eve. We enjoyed having a separate living room to spend time in, and the availability of books, movies and board games. The kitchen was well equipped and it was great to be able to make our own meals and bring in take-out. It is close to public transit and plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. We also enjoyed the proximity to Golden Gate park on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It was very clean and well looked after. Downsides are that despite the close proximity of the muni, it is far from the main action of San Fran, and sometimes is difficult to reach via public transit. We also experienced some noise problems until another tenant (and their puppy) had left. There is a second apartment below, and it would be good to rent both if travelling in a group. The photos accurately depict the property.

The Castle is an interesting place to stay. It's convenient for the public transportation, comfortable and well served by local restaurants within walking distance. Certainly no need for a car if all you want to do is explore the city - the MUNI pass is great value and an efficient transportation service. The best part of the house for us was the decking out the back overlooking the garden - the weather was superb so it was a great spot to sit and read. We would rate this as a four star property but for the noise problem from the owners apartment above. Most nights there was a constant background noise and movement from the upstairs running until up to 4.00 am. This was most intrusive and made sleeping difficult. We did request on our last night that the noise was kept down - it worked we got a solid 9 hours sleep before departing in the morning. So for those wanting a quiet location this is probably not for you unless you can convince the owners to adopt a less noctural lifestyle.

Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Owner response: There was some noise and movement from the upstairs one night only from 3:15 am. to 4.00 am. because I woke up that night and when I was going to the kitchen, I was trip over some thing on the floor in the dark, and make some noise, because it was difficult to stand up from the floor for me. It never happen before and not going to happen again. Promise. As my apology I make a present bottle of good vine to my guests, for the incident at that night and order Limousine to transfer them to Airport next morning. Most of our guests very happy with my hostility and hospitality. Please come over and you will be glad you come. Thank you, Michael

Our stay at a the rental property was an interesting one. Location and facilities were great however the noise coming from owners apartment above each night until early hours of the morning was quite annoying. We don't know what was going on each night, however it sound like furniture being dragged across the floor. The appointments in the rental were great, wi fi, kitchen facilities etc. Location was great, handy little grocery store around the corner and close to transport and Golden Gate Park. Tip - the Hop On Hop Off bus is very handy as one of stops is in front of California Academy of Science, a short walk to rental accommodation.

Spacious bedroom/living area and a newly done kitchen diner with everything you could need. This was great for preparing meals for ourselves and our 8 month old daughter. There is also a very pleasant outside space. Michael took great pains to ensure we knew where everything was and how it worked and also recommended a number of take-away places. We hadn't realised from the description of the property that the apartment shared an entrance and foyer nor that you had to walk through the foyer to get to the kitchen and bathroom. Unfortunately noise was an issue at night (loud voices and moving furniture) but when we asked for this to be kept down on the 3rd night Michael was obliging and we were not disturbed afterwards. On the whole a comfortable stay and the apartment has good transport links and nearby shops/restaurants. The only other comment I would make is perhaps a new bed and mattress.

The property is very well represented by the pictures, description and previous reviews. The location is excellent as it is close to Golden Gate Park, transit into downtown, and great little restaurants on Irving Street (try Crepevine). The rooms are very clean and the house is well maintained. The owner, Michael, was very pleasant and provided us with good information about the rental and area upon check in, except about the parking limitations. We were told that the street cleaning had been done for the area the day before so we didn't need to worry about when we parked during our week there. What we didn't realize is that this referred to only one side of that specific street so we received a $55 ticket by parking on the other side of the street. Strongly recommend to Michael that this information be included in the info package. Renters check the signs carefully on each street! The only other downside is that the mattress on the pull out couch is very thin so you can feel the frame bars through the mattress, making for a very uncomfortable sleep. Sleeping sideways on the bed, in between the bars, was necessary. Pull out bed would be best for younger children. The main bed however is very comfortable.

My husband and I planned our trip to San Francisco with our six year old daughter over the weekend. We never tried Home Away rentals before, and thought we would give it a try. This rental looked great because of its proximity to Golden Gate park and the cost and description of the premises. When we arrived, the owner, received us and gave us a tour of the place. The main bedroom and living-room are next to each other, which made it convenient for us with our daughter. The kitchen area is fully equipped with all modern conveniences. We got a list of take out food places in the area, a map to the closest grocery story (only a block away!) and information about places to visit. It was awesome! My husband enjoyed having a computer on premises, and access to Wifi for his own. This made everything easier, as we planned our day in the city, checking open times, and maps of places of interest. The bathroom though small was perfect. It was really like a home away from home. Having the kitchen available helped ensuring breakfast which meant additional savings for our budget. We really liked the place.

The bathroom though small was perfect. It was really like a home away from home. Having the kitchen available helped ensuring breakfast which meant additional savings for our budget. We really liked the place. There is/was one MAJOR issue though. We spent a total of three nights, and all three nights we were awaken by shouting and what seemed like a heated argument between spouses. The movement of furniture just upstairs where we slept and the fighting was very disturbing. The first night when we heard the shouting, we thought it was unusual, and even though it was very loud, we were so tired from our trip coming in that we just dismissed it. The second night was even louder--right around 1-3 in the morning. We kept awake most of the night wondering if to leave and stay at a hotel instead. Since we had already paid for the rental, we decided to tough it up on our last night there. When we arrived early evening, everything was quiet. Then the owners arrived close to midnight, and again, the shouting and fighting started. So, even though the place is nice and convenient, with great amenities, and pleasant initial encounter with the owner, we would not rent it again. Note that the deposit is only returned after posting a review as per the rental contract.

The location is really perfect. Close to lots of restaurants (9th and Irving St.), an award winning bakery on 9th and it's close to the Golden Gate Park. In the park is plenty to do and see (musea, etc) and in 30 mins you can walk to Haight Ashbury. The apartment was very clean and the garden is nice. Michael was very helpfull and gave us lots of tips of things to do and even a permit for our car. We do recommend this place!

We chose to stay at this property as it was in a great location and inexpensive compared to most San Francisco hotels. Everything was as described, with a very nice kitchen, however, the lack of any bathroom vanity or counter space was a bit of an inconvenience. While having a parking pass was great to avoid the 2 hour limitations during the day, it was still a serious challenge to find parking on the crowded residential streets, but that is standard for SF. A couple suggestions for the owner: Remove the kitchen table and chairs from the bedroom, as these are not very functional for the room. Rearranging the living room to allow a comfortable view of the entertainment center would make this room more useful. An updated mattress with a box spring would also greatly improve the rental.

This property provided my family and I the "BEST" vacation ever! During my stay I was able to pretend that I actually lived in the beautiful city of San Francisco thanks to the awesome accommodations. We really enjoyed the italian granite kitchen with the chandelier the house has many more chandeliers as well. The outdoor deck and and garden were lovely as well. The computer room room was very handy. The house was very clean and neat. The bathroom came with fresh plush towels. Michael went out of his way to ensure that we would have a fabulous time in his beautiful home. The parking pass came in real handy and never had a problem finding a parking space close to 1562 11 th avenue. The whole area was very safe. Would love to come back to San Francisco and stay here again no need to look for another place this one was perfect! Thanks again Michael

The rental property was clean. Michael was very cordial. The kitchen was updated with a disposal, coffee maker, and newer fridge. I didn't have a problem with the fact that most of the furniture was somewhat old. However, I was surprised by the fact that the owner and his wife were so nocturnal. Their activities in the middle of the night often awoke or kept us up, as their living space is located right above the rental apartment. If you're a sound sleeper, you'll have no problems, I suppose. To Michael's credit, he apologized for the noise after the 1st night. He also pointed out where we could find extra blankets, when the weather turned colder during our stay.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Michaels home and it really is as good as it looks. Michael met us on arrival and showed us around, then gave us loads of information about the home and also the area. It was brilliant for us as first time visitors to San Francisco. The house has everything you could possibly need for your stay and is well decorated and maintained. The kitchen is wonderful, and the computer, with internet access proved a vital tool in helping us to plan our days out. There is also access to a washing machine and tumble dryer downstairs so you can have clean clothes when you leave! There is no need for a car when staying here as the house is only 2 blocks from the Metro, and a 20 minute journey takes you into the heart of the city. The neighbourhood is very quiet and safe, but there are plenty of bars and restaurants a couple of blocks away. Michael lives upstairs, but does not intrude, and is available should you have any questions or problems. I would recommend this property to anyone staying in San Francisco and we will hopefully return in the not too distant future.

Nice neighborhood and close to UCSF Medical Center. We enjoyed the roominess of the apartment but felt it was a little disjointed with the kitchen since it was a exit from the apartment to the main stairwell and then into the kitchen and bathroom. It was very quiet and peaceful location. There was a garden in the back you can enjoy. Appears to be remodeled. The style in the apartment is a victorian period. I kind of felt I was staying in a museum but in a nice way. Overall our stay was pleasant and Michael was very attentive to the comfort of our stay. Highly recommend..

My wife and I found this place and took a chance. We were not dissapointed. A ton of ornate details make this place a cut above the rest. It was very clean and super close to Golden Gate Park and the inner Richmond area full of culture and great food, especially chinese. I would definitely reccomend this place to a friend. Thank you again Michael for your proffesionalism and hospitality.

Comfortable, well-appointed apartment in the Inner Sunset convenient to diverse restaurants, shopping, and amenities. The owner was accommodating and helpful. Has a charming back garden to sit in and a deck with a view of Mt. Sutro. My family and I were completely satisfied with the rental. There are some nice extra touches included: a beautiful fully-equipped kitchen, a modern PC, and a charming old world style living room with comfortable furniture. I slept well and felt I had a home to return to after my busy days in SF. It is also two blocks from public transportation so I was able to travel easily throughout the city. Another plus is the proximity of Golden Gate park and some of the major attractions: Botanical Garden, DeYoung and Science Museums and the Japanese Tea Garden. I would stay here again without hesitation and would recommend it to anyone.

My boyfriend and our 2 friends stayed in this apartment, and we had plenty of space and didn't feel overcrowded. The area it is situated in is surbaban and quiet but within walking distance to shops and some amazing restaurants. One of the pluses for us was the permit to park our car on the street which can be like gold dust in the city. Michael and his wife Paulina are so welcoming, accommodating and knowledgeable about the area, we immediately felt at home. The kitchen is extremely well equipped (more so than my own kitchen at home), and the decking out the back makes me want to go back and visit in the summer to take full advantage of it. I would certainly recommend it and hope to go back and visit again.

September 2010; My ( new) husband and I rented this lovely apartment the third week in September. We found it had everything we needed and we relaxed in it for many hours reading, cooking easy meals, gazing out on the picturesque garden. Towards the end of our stay and before some travelling we were able to clean all our clothes because of easy access to washing facilities, and freshening up in the nice bathroom after a long day sight-seeing was worth the extra travelling time; to come ' home' rather than to just a hotel room. Would definitely recommend this apartment if you don't mind catching local transport. Shops are quite close for all your requisites in any case. The broadband access made all our onward planning ( and there was a huge amount of that ! ) work out and the owner was very helpful. You can park a car outside the place too saving a fortune on fees. A delightful property we thoroughly enjoyed. Kay and Andy from the UK.
