Southern Comfort is designed for privacy, seclusion, and fun on a world-class, white sand beach. It is located in a unique setting on the south end of Ponte Vedra Beach - bounded by the Guana State Wildlife Preserve on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. A beautiful sand beach for walking, lounging, or playing even when the tide is high.
The highly sought after beach experience at Southern Comfort is one of a kind with a private grass backyard leading to the dune top verandah, wooden dune walkover access, and shady beach side gazebo with comfortable seats and fresh water showers. Each bedroom has it's own private deck next to mature tropical palm trees and the house has 360 degree wooden decks to access and view the ocean to the east and the State Wildlife Preserve and Guana Lake to the west.
The home will accommodate an extended family or multiple families and still afford the privacy and seclusion everyone desires. Southern Comfort qualities you will appreciate: 900 square foot master bedroom suite on the 2.5 level with great views, king bed, sitting area with comfortable chairs and sofabed, morning kitchen, cable TV, private bath, and great views. This is like a home within a home. Two other large bedrooms on the second floor each have their own private bath and are outfitted with a king bed and two queen beds respectively. The fourth bedroom is on the ground floor, has a twin bed, and also has it's own bath.
Southern Comfort provides a variety of settings for individual and/or group relaxation. On the ground floor there is a "classic Ponte Vedra Beach" great room with a TV and stereo sitting area. The house is stocked with DVDs, VHS tapes, and CDs so you don't have to worry about making a trip to the nearby video rental store on the first night. The all cedar tongue-in-groove walls and high ceilings evoke days gone by while providing a cool and cozy retreat from the outdoors. Or relax in the cyprus "Florida Room" which fronts the ocean and is designed for quiet relaxation and cool breezes with it's comfortable woven sea grass furniture, reading lamps, and game table. We keep plenty of games on hand whether it's playing cards, chess, board games, or checkers.
There are two well appointed kitchens located in different wings on the ground floor to provide flexibility and additional privacy for big families, large groups, or people on the go with different timetables, priorities, and/or food preferences. You may find that this set up makes life easier when someone is cleaning their morning "surf fishing catch" of Pompano and Redfish in one kitchen while at the same time breakfast is getting cooked in the other to get the day started for the later risers. Adjoining dining tables for each kitchen combine to accommodate a dozen people while "TV tray" overflow options abound. Dining outdoors on the deck is always a nice option when the weather is nice as there are tables and chairs set up and ready to go.
Kids and veteran beach goers immediately love the layout of the house while people used to the sterile cookie cutter layouts that have been built up and down the coast can be perplexed for the better part of the first day. Features include three separate staircases (plus another one outside). The house is two and one half stories high. There is a north end and a south end with common areas in the middle and two separate keyed entries in the front. Multiple outdoor showers cool you off and keep the salt and sand outside. Several storage sheds house beach toys, the charcoal grill, and other miscellaneous items. There are connecting decks and private decks. Two sitting rooms are outfitted with cable TV and a really comfortable mix of furniture. A multitude of outdoor lounge chairs and recliners that seem to change location constantly throughout the day are stocked outside. It is classic beach house all the way. Our family still argues over who has the best bedroom since all three bedrooms upstairs easily pass the "master" test. You will have fun debating this one yourself!
In the Winter and Spring months Right Whales can be spotted off our beach. Our last sighting was mid-February off our master bedroom balcony. These whales lumber past very slowly and, in the case of our last sighting, they are sometimes accompanied by dolphins who seem to be "showing them the way". The area off our beach is the only known place where they come to give birth to their young so it is pretty exciting to see them in the water. If you do see them off the beach, you are asked to exit the water and keep at least 500 yards distance from them or their young.
May 1st through October 31 is turtle nesting season. It is common to find Loggerhead or Leatherback Turtle nests on the beach and turtle tracks left on the sand by these huge turtles the night before. It is amazing to think these tutrles travel all over the globe and dive down to depths as far as 400 feet!
Finally, remember your mountain bikes as the Guana Wildlife Management Area trails are a real treat. The bike trail picks up right outside our front door and it is a short 5 minute bike trip to the trail heads at the State Wildlife Preserve. Pack your binoculars and a picnic lunch for an unforgettable time in one of the two 3 story birding towers located along the hiking trails nearby. Or, rent on of the kayaks or canoes at the nearby Gauna dam and enjoy viewing nature or fishing in the unspoiled beauty of Ponte Vedra Lake.
Our beach is in excellent condition. Lots of white sand and plenty of beach to enjoy whether the tide is high or low. The shelling has been terrific this month (April) with conch shells, starfish, pinwheels, etc. and the waves have been fun for the boogie boards and surfing. As always, the dolphins are active and clearly visible plyying and feeding just beyond the breakers.
