Bakersville house description
Click on the CRABAPPLERIDGE(dot)COM site at bottom of this page for MORE PICTURES and great things to see and do locally.
We finished building this house in 2011 on the side of a hill offering a spectacular view of Roan Mountain in the distance. A terrific barn on the property marks its history as a tobacco farm.
When we saw a doe and her fawn feeding at at the Crabapple tree one morning, we decided to call the property Crabapple Ridge. We see deer and wild turkeys nibbling in the wildflower meadow often, also enjoy a variety of birds at the feeders, the birdbath and the surrounding forest.
Just out the front door we can follow an old logging trail to the top of the ridge behind the house. Within minutes we can drive to trailheads putting us onto the beautiful Appalachian trail, including one section through a grove of rhododendrons.
Nearby Penland is home to the famous Penland School of Crafts. The Bakersfield area offers something for everyone in your family. Mine tours, rafting, a wide variety of arts, antiques, fishing and hiking.

My husband and I had a wonderful time at Crabapple Ridge. The view was beautiful, the house was cozy and, best of all, we felt deliciously as if we'd gotten away from it all. We loved the feeling of being private and yet having recreation nearby. The cabin itself is well-outfitted and supplied. The nearby town of Spruce Pine has delightful eateries, and recreational opportunities abound - hiking, kayaking and ziplining.

Owner response: We are thrilled when visitors enjoy the property and the lovely mountainous region as much as we do.
Peace and Quiet
Peace and Quiet
My wife and I wanted to disappear for a few days to read, relax and regroup... We began our drive into the mountains and at each hill and dale we passed the work, work, work world began to melt away. When we arrived arrived, we were greeted by a completely fabulous rustic old tobacco/hay barn, fruit trees and a completely remodeled main house. It was clean, modern and way way back off the main road of everyday life. If you are looking for room service, hot and cold running caviar and in-room massage, this is not the place but if you want some uninterrupted time to write the Great American Novel or maybe just read one, you will be happy. There are several small towns close by with remarkable restaurants and other diversions if you like... but we marveled as the clouds swirled over the peaks out the front windows as all manner of wildlife scampered around. It's a lovely little place with helpful owners and reasonable prices. If you want to watch a movie, there is a TV and a nice DVD collection and a pretty wonderful library of paperbacks in the living room. There is even a Barbecue. Drawbacks: No cable TV, no phone, no Internet, no noise, no traffic, no malls and no people...we loved it. And yes, we really stayed there and yes all the photos are fair and accurate. Lynn and David

Why the Owner Chose Bakersville:
We choose this area for the wonderful views, cool Summer temps and proximity to all we love about NC. Nearby Penland School of Crafts, Appalachain Trail, fishing and rafting are great too! summer. Fall foilage is a treat too as leaves don't change in the Lowcountry of SC.
