  Highly recommend this apartment, location and owner- easily 5 stars!! We couldn't stop talking about how lucky we were to find this wonderful apartment. It made our Girl Scout trip to NYC even more fabulous. Marea greeted us when we arrived, gave us valuable tips on where to go and how to get there. The apartment and location were super! The place was well maintained - clean and the perfect size. We took advantage of the kitchen and eating area to have leisurely breakfasts before starting out on our daily adventures. We were so close to everything, sightseeing, several subway stations, restaurants, and shopping. We really liked this neighborhood and it's location. It was very safe, quiet, and had a relaxed atmosphere. We traveled with 8 teenagers and 3 adults and used both the main apartment and the library, and studio. We would definitely come back! Also important to us was that whenever we contacted Marea, the owner, prior to our visit, with questions - we received a prompt, caring, and informative response. We couldn't have asked for better service - it was like visiting family.

  Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

  The location of the apartment & the overall comfort it afforded us, played a big part in the success of our NYC vacation. Before we arrived, I was nervous that the unit wouldn't measure up to our expectations but I need not have. The apartment worked well for us - one couple & 3 teenagers. Everyone had room to spread out, especially at the end of the day. We read in the bedroom, the young ones played cards, watched TV in the main room and snacked in the kitchen. Everyone was happy.was happy. I especially loved reading the newspaper in the back patio...what an oasis! While we visited the weather broke records, 25 degrees Celsius in March...I can imagine how wonderful this little spot must be in summer, especially when you can fire up the

  Marea greeted us on arrival, and that was the last time we saw her (she wasn't particularly well, but couldn't be contacted even by phone - it was usually turned off.) There were four of us having a reunion in NY, (from NZ, England and the US) and even tho' location was great, not a lot else was. The apartment goes down from the street (ie a basement), so dark all the time. The yard was dirty and not conducive to sitting outside. The fridge didn't work so all the food we bought the first weekend had to be thrown away (owners had gone away for the weekend). Of the 3 TVs, only one worked - on one station - and this was during the Tennis Open in NY! There were some great restaurants nearby which we enjoyed. For the price we paid which was a lot even though two of the friends were only there for half the time (ie 12 days at full price for four) we could have easily stayed at a hotel. The property was reasonably clean, but I would not recommend this property to anyone to stay in, despite the location. We were all rather disappointed having looked forward to it for so long, and the friend from England wanted to move out.

  Recommended for: Families with young children, tourists without a car.

  Owner response: I take guests’ suggestions very seriously & I take prompt action when there is something I can do better. However, I am flabbergasted that you think the apartment is in the basement. Please look at the photos to be sure you have the correct apartment. You rented the entire 1st floor and ½ of the 2nd floor of the building. There is a full basement under the apartment. Perhaps it was the shade trees that were not to your liking. Both the street in front of the house & your garden have mature trees that provide lovely shade in summer. They keep the air about 10 degrees cooler than most of the “cement city” & are much appreciated by most people. Everybody has different tastes. It is true that NYC is not the cleanest city in the world & outdoor areas don’t stay clean without maintenance. Your private garden was thoroughly cleaned the day you arrived as was your apartment. You chose not to pay for the interim service option or to maintain it yourselves. The common area in front of the building is serviced 3 times a week. The HDTVs work fine. It is simply a matter of not changing cable setting. I showed you on arrival plus a 2nd time. Chris went to your apartment several times to show you & the Instructions are in the Information book. I am sorry that you could not enjoy the over 500 channels in the Premium Package. Despite our best efforts to keep everything in top conditions, occasionally things break down. I apologize again for the problem with the refrigerator door. Remember back: we had the repairman there the next day. He said that someone was hanging on the door and pulled it off kilter. You had my email, my cell phone, the housekeeper’s cell phone & the superintendent’s cell phone. Although I cannot be at the building everyday 24/7, someone is there 6 days a week & someone is always on call. Guests are given complete privacy unless they let me know otherwise. Could it be that the real problem was that the apartment is a self catering apartment and not a hotel with a concierge and 24 hour service? And I am sorry that your friend who came late because her daughter was having a baby paid for some days that she did not use. Please remember I did offer for you to stay in the apartment alone at a lower price, but you insisted that you wanted the extra rooms for the snorers in your group. I am truly sorry that I could not make your vacation perfect for you.

  My partner and I along with 2 married friends stayed in Marea's lovely apartment for 7 days. The location was perfect as it is central to most attractions and close to the subway. The apartment itself is extremely quiet at night (a bonus in such a noisy city) and we really enjoyed the lovely courtyard setting. Marea was the perfect hostess and was extremely organized and helpful with her planning and preparation. l would thoroughly recommend this rental to other travellers.

  "Splendid apartment in central Manhattan" A little bit of homely heaven situated in Manhattan, walking distance from all major attractions. Great facilities all round with a lovely garden patio in which to rest your feet at the end of the day. Charming owners who go out of their way to make you feel really special. As a result our first trip to NYC was a truly memorable one. Would not hesitate to recommend this apartment with five star

  I must say that after reading the previous reviews of this rental that I was a little surprised with our group's experience here and with all the 5/5 reviews. We had a group of 8 friends and were there for 3 nights. This apartment has a shared entrance to the apartment with the owner whom lives directly upstairs. The only bathroom is inside the only bedroom (the one with the queen bed). That bedroom doesn't have a door, only a curtain as a "door". If you have a group and are in the queen bed bedroom get used to hearing everyone's bathroom business. During the check-in, the owner mentioned that there was some ice cream in the freezer and that they would be down later to get it while we were out...a little odd and presumptuous I think. The first night there we wanted to turn the heat up and found that the heating controls are in the owner's apartment. There were not any extra blankets around in the apartment. We tried to contact the owner via phone...no luck. We knocked on the owner's door two separate times. The owner (and the live in friend/housekeeper) came down not long after, barged into the apartment without notice and began berating my fiance about the heating situation and how it is computer controlled in her apartment. Mind you, my fiance was trying to sleep and in the bed! The owner used some pretty foul and demeaning language completely uncalled for which included words not allowed in this review. Needless to say, we were a bit concerned about future intrusions from then on. Fortunately, we were out most of the time. All you really get here is location. Don't expect anything really extravagant. It's more like a hostel than anything with some really outdated furniture and a small bathroom which needs a new shower curtain. It would be fine for some guys weekend trip but I wouldn't bring anyone you are trying to impress. We have stayed at many VRBO rentals without any problems and they have usually exceeded expectations. Next time in NYC, we will look elsewhere for sure.

  Owner response: I just wanted to say thanks so much for pointing out that it is not usually a good idea for 1 engaged couple to share an apartment with 6 men in spite of the cost savings. And it's probably made even harder when the one girl is left alone while the men are out together. And lets be honest, Wes, Nikki called the phone in Your Apartment, not Mine (as on caller ID). When she finally called my phone I immediately went to her apartment at her demand & I don't think she was asleep in the few minutes it took me to get there. She either could not or would not plug in the 3 extra heaters, remove the suitcase from the heat vent, close the door to keep the heat inside or take the extra quilts & blankets out of the linen closet. The heater is programmed per the NYC tenants' law and keeps the building quite warm when the doors are closed and the vents are not blocked. And weren't you luck to have a rare spring day where the temperature went up to 78? As in most apartment buildings there is a common entrance. The apartments have private doors, doorbells & intercoms. Your 2 bathrooms have wooden doors. You arrived 3 1/2 hours early before the apartment was thoroughly cleaned and 3 of you overstayed and did not want to pay. You signed the guest agreement with everything spelled out including the reasonable guest policy.....and we discussed it on your early arrival. Despite that someone in your group rang my 3rd floor doorbell twice after 3 AM and also rang the 4th floor doorbell in the middle of the Night. Again in the middle of the night my husband had to go to your apartment to ask your group to keep down the noise because of neighbor complaints. Most of my guests are lovely and considerate and are happy with the apartment. I love meeting them and helping them enjoy their stay in NYC. Many guests return & refer their friends. Sorry you felt the need to personally attack me and the apartment about this. Seems like its best for all involved that you've sworn never to return.

  we had a wonderful time in new york thanks in a large part to marea. our family of 9 were very comfortable in apartmentand the suite. the teenagers loved the big tv. we couldn´t use garden because of the snow but we hope to be back again in the warm weather, this is our new york home now!!! sergio and family

  This was our first trip to NYC, and we came with myself, my wife, and our six children ages 18-8! Whew! Marea made herself our personal tour guide, and it all started with her lovely apartment in the perfect location for a trip to NYC. Everything was smooth, from check-in to departure, and was everything she had promised it would be. We will return to NY again, and the first place we look for accommodations will be with Marea, for this apartment. We could not recommend this rental more enthusiastically!

  Appartment is in a great location, really nice neighborhod, great resturants, deli's and close to Empire State, Macys etc. 1 block from subway. Appartment well furnished TV, internet, & good kitchen. Service was very good, especially as we had to extend our stay due to flights being affected by the volcanic ash from Iceland

  Garden oasis in the middle of Manhattan This apartment is located right in the middle of Manhattan convenient to everything. It is very comfortable and quiet but the real secret is its wonderful garden which provides an oasis where you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

  Just wanted to say that our stay at Marea's property was lovely. We stayed 3 nights last week and had a fabulous time. Marea went above and beyond the norm from the moment I contacted her about this rental. She was very very helpful in every area. She answered all my emails in a very timely manner and was always extremely nice. The apartment and suite was very accomodating for our group of NINE girls. Yes, having only one shower was a bit trying at times but it all worked out beautifully. I felt very safe in the area and would recommend this rental to anyone who is desiring a good, clean, safe place to stay while visiting NYC. Thanks Marea for all you did to make our stay a memorable one!

  What a great welcome! After traveling 36 hours we arrived to a delightful welcome from Marea. From here on, it only got better. Our stay was for 12 days with 2 "parents" and 5 "kids" aged 18 to 24. The location was spot on with the subway 5 min walk and Times Square an easy 15-20 min. All amenities are within 3-5 min walk. Great safe locale. The apartment itself was adequate for our uses with an outdoor area that included a wonderful Xmas tree and REAL snow!!! We lucked out, as they say. We silly Kiwis also had a Xmas BBQ outside in minus 6c and dinner for 10 in the apartment. We used all rooms with seven actually staying however we really only slept there and were out and about from 9am-10am until late (great bars and restaurants around the area). 2 toilets and one shower (good pressure). Very comfortable beds. Plenty of towels. Beats 3-4 hotel rooms any day. This apartment only added to our Big Apple experience. Thanks Marea and Family and yes, see you in New Zealand sometime soon.   had a truely excellent week 1st week in December 2008 staying in this apartment,accommodation was great & its situation for seeing the sights, couldn't be beaten. Marea made us feel extremely welcome, her "inside" knowledge of the immediate area amd more, was so beneficial. We have recommded this accommodation to friends who are staying there in January 2009, and we ourselves very much hope to revisit in the near future. You will not be disapponited should you reserve the apartment or annex, at 118 30th East Street for your vacation in New York City.

  Just back from a very memorable stay at Mareas townhouse in manhattan, the apartment and the suite suited our family so well, my son and two daughters all stayed in the duplex whilst myself and my husband stayed in the apartment, we all got together in the mornings in the lovely large living room to plan our day ahead and at the end of the day after all our sightseeing spent in end of the evening in front of the fire watching the tv, it suited us fine. Location was ideal subway within a mintues walk and 5th Ave just a moment away, had breakfast at penelopes on the corner, it was lovely, bluesmoke for bbq also very good all recommended by Marea. Thankyou so much for letting us stay in your lovely apartment and when we come back to New York we are sure to stay again. Only downside was only one shower but we managed and it didnt hold us up too much even with two grown up daughters, thanks again The Hynes family from England

  Our family of 4 just spent 9 nights in this apartment. The owner is wonderful and helpful in getting your oriented. The apartment is large for NY and the garden is a gem. So much better than a hotel. Quiet, centrally located for walking or public transit. Lot's to do in the neighborhood. But it is the apartment that is so special. Clean, well taken care of, everything you need and everything is in working order. Highly recommend staying at Marea's place.

  Great place to stay! We all enjoyed our fun filled week in NY. The apartment was exactly what was expected...near subway, near the Empire State Building and Macy's. It was clean and welcoming. Marea is wonderful and has all kinds of information for you in the apartment. I would recommend staying here for anyone! We had 8 people staying and although there was only one shower we managed well.

  My wife and 3 kids stayed here last week and had a great time. We stayed in the apartment, my dad and wife's brother and girlfriend stayed in the 2 room duplex. There was plenty of room for everyone and the living accomadations were fantastic. The outdoor patio was landscaped nicely and great to have. I grew up in NY and this was the first time for my family to visit the "Big Apple" and we all had a trip of a lifetime. The place is located in a very nice and safe part of Manhattan that is tree lined and quiet. There were restuarants, stores, and transportation all nearby. Marea was a wonderful and delightful host. She has provided a lot of useful information for her guests who have never been to Manhattan and for those who have. Based on the fun we had we plan on coming back next year and will most definetly be back at this great place. Once again I'd like to thank Marea for making our NY stay very fun and memorable.   We had about 8 family members stay with Marea in May 2008. We really enjoyed staying in this beautiful home. The location was convenient, excellent, and the home was really cozy. It gave us a really great experience of living like a real New Yorker. Our family had a great time and highly recommend Marea's home.

  We celebrated my wife's 40th birthday with her mother and her sister's family -- 9 people for a week in the Big Apple. If you've got a large group, there is no better deal in NYC than Marea's apartment, so book it early. You truly "live like a New Yorker," with the subway, funky shops and restaurants, and a zombie hobo all right around the corner. WE LOVED IT! Our girls, 10 and 12, were particularly impressed. It's great to have your own apartment to crash at rather than a stuffy and expensive hotel. And Marea is a great hostess -- helpful but unobtrusive. We'll be back!

  Thankyou for a wonderful stay in Manhatten.The appartent was ideal and suited us all as a large family, especially with the annexe as well.The children found the whole experience amazing, and we packed so much into the week! The appartment was so close to all the sightseeing spots, and the subway just around the corner. We all had a truly wonderful time, and thanks to Marea for making our stay so comfortable and welcoming. We shall certainly be visiting again.

  Dear Marea Back in Sydney safe and sound. Katya,the youngest, is actually back at school. Tania and I are still a bit jet-lagged after all our flying but it's getting less each day. A big thankyou once again. Our stay in NY was fantastic, made even more so by staying with you. Your apartment is excellent and so well located. As recommended, Tania and I had a cocktail in the Rainbow Room on our last evening. Clear skies and a fantastic sunset. All the restaurants we tried from your list were great. As a couple of additions in terms of those which are close, the Banc on the corner of East 30th and 3rd is very good. Excellent bar for a drink as well, although Friday is very crowded. Just along from this, between 29th and 28th is a little bar called Makers, no food and a very basic bar but we found the barmen there excellent. I'm a bit more inclined to the simple small bars whereas others may not. A bit further a field, Tavern on Jane, West Village (just off 14th) is excellent for a weekend brunch/lunch.   The apartment was excellent, fantastic location, walking distance to shoping, good food and local transport. Marea was wonderful, she gave us fantastic advice about places to go, where to eat and the tour guides left were invaluble. A home away from home. Hope to stay here again in the future.

  Thank you very much for making us feel so welcome in your town house. Your place was central and so homely and cosy. We were a group of friends and it suited us. You made us feel so welcome with the wine and chocolate and your time spent with us recommending restaurants etc, your book of references and all your travel books and brochures you have accumulated were a great help during our stay.Your recommendation of teh limo service to and from the airport was great and worked out really well and all in all added to our trip to New York!

  The apartment was superb. Great location, i.e., close to subways, good eats, shopping and attractions. We take annual trips together and this trip beat all trips that we've taken in the past 16 years of vacationing together. Marea provided us with great tips and suggestions. We definitely will be coming back and hopefully if available will be able to stay at Marea's. Her place gets taken up fast. So don't wait on making your reservations. We made our reservations over 1 year in advance. Thanks, Marea, for a fantastic and memorable time.

  My husband and I get to New York about 4 times a year and rent apartments each time. This was absolutely the best place. We celebrated his birthday with friends, dinner in the garden was perfect. We were greeted, made to feel welcome and knew we could ask questions if needed. A great place for those visiting New York for the first time or for those who love the city.

  We stayed with our whole family of eight people in the townhouse and it could easily accomodate us. Enough rooms and space for everyone. We really enjoyed our vacation in NYC and we had a great time. We couldn't have asked for a better location. When we go back we will definitely try to stay in Marea's townhouse again.   We stayed at this apartment during our family's week long visit to NYC. This apartment is very conveniently located. We can be midtown, uptown, downtown and crosstown in no time. The place itself is very clean and has that old charm. Marea was such a gracious host. We really enjoyed her warm hospitality. Gigi and Leoni were both very friendly and accommodating too. We absolutely enjoyed our stay here and will definitely look to stay here again when we go back to New York city in the future. It is also surrounded by many good restaurants. We especially liked Jaiya Thai, Iron Sushi and Mishima. And the bagels at Dunkin Donuts! Thank you again, Marea!

  Hi Marea, I just want to say thank you so much for your hospitality during our week in NYC. You have a wonderful apartment, that is so close to everything. Your hints about restaurants were invaluable (next time we will definately try One if by land, two if by Sea!!)It was a real pleasure to come home each evening to such a welcoming and comforting place. The garden is great although we couldn't use it too much in December!!(save that for next time) Thanks also for giving us so much information prior to our visit that enabled us to make an informed decision about bringing our electric wheelchair to your apartment - which we did, and found it very manageable with the two strong men we brought with us!   My sister, aunte and myself stayed at Marea's lovely apartment while we enjoyed a "girls week" in NYC. The apartment was spacious with every amenity we needed and more and the location was central whether we were walking, using the metro or taking a taxi. It is my pleasure to highly recommend it to anyone looking for a real New York experience.

  We had a great time in New York and that was very much depending on Marea and staying in her apartment. After a busy day just walking the streets of NY or visiting Top of the Roc, Macy´s, Bloomingdale, Broadway, Apple Store etc. it was really nice to return to Mareas apartment. I, my wife and our three boys can really recommend staying at Mareas apartment. It is beautiful, quiet and clean. And Marea, thank you for your tips what to do during our week in New York.

  From the moment we arrived late at night to a week later when we departed in the early dawn, this aparment was exactly what we needed for our stay in Manhattan. Marea and her family are gracious hosts who truly care that you enjoy the aparment and the city. The apartment is exceptionally quiet and convenient to public transportation and all the city has to offer. Marea provides enough details, personal favorites, and guide books for anyone to enjoy her great city. The air conditioning, comfortable seating, and fridge and microwave was much appreciated even though we escaped the now infamous heat wave - the courtyard is a sublime and rare treat in NYC. I'd definitely return again, and would send anyone to this great apartment.
