We spent a week here with another couple and LOVED our entire stay. This house has the perfect layout for privacy (whether it be friends or relatives -- people on different schedules can easily have their own space without infringing on the other). The kitchen is stocked with everything you might need should you decide to cook a meal in (although there are so many good restaurants to explore while in the Portland area this may not be an option while you're in town). We steamed lobster (that we had caught that same day on "The Lucky Catch" lobster boat tour and purchased for $5 each after), made sweet corn and red potatoes and this was by far our best lobster dinner while in town. We enjoyed lunch at The Lobster Shack at Two Lights -- beautiful views while enjoying lobster at a picnic table adjacent to the ocean and had an excellent dinner at the Saltwater Grille. We had a great time strolling the streets of Portland, taking in the scenery, and trying the area's finest food and beverages. We met many of the neighbors and all were very friendly and willing to answer tourist questions. I enjoyed an afternoon of reading on the deck which was very relaxing! The description and photos are very accurate and Richard is kind and helpful (and promptly returned our security deposit)! This was our first experience renting and look forward to doing it again in the future. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and family.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

We loved this rental! Everything about it is first class. Very unique and very well cared for by the conscientious owners. Perfect location (we enjoyed the great coffee and pastry shop only a stone's throw away!). Within walking distance to great dining and the Portland Art Museum. An added plus is that the neighbors of this rental are friendly and helpful too and provided us with many local recommendations. We had a great experience here.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We love Portland and go up from Boston several weekends a year. So when we decided to do something more relaxed for this summer's vacation, the destination was an easy choice…the accommodations were not. I'm so glad we found this house because it helped make our vacation really amazing. The house is lovely, the kitchen is a cook's dream and the deck is simply magical. Richard's tips for both the house and Portland were super helpful and very accurate. The location was perfect for our needs, close to the Old Port (about a 15 minute walk to Novare Res) and super close to Downtown. I second Richard's recommendation on Zapoteca - we ate there the first night and the food was amazing. I would absolutely recommend this property and we'll be coming back next year!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car.

About the owner: Original loft dwellers in NYC, my wife and I were initially lured to Maine by its natural beauty, lakes and coastal access. After several years of vacationing in Maine's lake region and mid coast, we discovered Portland--a city whose sophistication with food and the arts, defies its size. After renting for one year, we found our ideal home--a converted 1880's carriage house located in the center of the Arts District, where we currently reside with our two Samoyeds. Portland's nationally reknowned restaurants--(my wife is a foodie), vibrant music, theater and arts scene--(I enjoy that) and ease of access to the woods and beaches--(my dogs require that) make it the ideal living place for us. A week or two in Portland can be the perfect get away vacation for you, and may result in you too seeking permanent residency in Maine, as my wife Stephanie and I have.
