The apartment, is located at Piazza S. Egidio which is situated roughly between Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and the Tiber. It is a three-room apartment with a large bedroom (double-size bed) and plenty of closet space, a large eat-in kitchen, and a living room that looks out on the piazza. The bathroom, though narrow, is quite modern and pretty; it has a shower, not a tub. There are ceiling fans in all three rooms and in the summer there is air conditioning as well. Roughly 60 square meters or 700 square feet, the apartment is on the second floor, European-style, which means there are two flights of stairs. There is no elevator. It has lovely, wood, beamed ceilings in all three rooms and is very cozy and warmly furnished. It differs from most of the others on the market because of its real, lived-in charcter and, in fact, I lived here for over 20 years before moving down the block six years ago.
Along with its attractive furnishings, new, firm mattress, and extremely well-appointed kitchen, there are several hundred books, a broad selection of guidebooks and maps, and a new TV with Sky Italia satellite that gives you access to dozens of Italian and foreign channels. There is also a VCR (with a small collection of films) and a CD-cassette player with radio. There is no washing machine, but there is a coin-operated laundromat around the corner. A small computer with a DSL connection is available for getting on the internet at a cost of 10 euros a week for unlimited access. The bed is standard double (140 cm).
Rates include weekly maid service, utilities (heating or air conditioning depending on the season), and local phone calls. An international phone card can be used to make other calls from the apartment.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APARTMENT IS MEANT FOR ONE PERSON OR FOR TWO PEOPLE WHO SHARE A BED. In some circumstances, the living room couch can be used by an additional person for sleeping, but there is an extra charge for this. MINIMUM RENTAL PERIOD, UNLESS THERE IS A SHORTER GAP BETWEEN TWO LONGER RENTALS, IS FIVE NIGHTS.
The bedroom is extremely quiet. The entire apartment is quiet during the day and the piazza below is delightful.
In the evenings the living room side is less quiet because the café downstairs is highly popular. In some periods, depending on the vigilance or lack thereof of the Rome city police, street musicians and peddlers also make an appearance. And generally, except in the coldest part of the winter, there are lots of people walking about and enjoying the scene since, as you probably know, Trastevere is a sort of Roman Greenwich Village or Marais and is consequently quite lively.
During the day the cafe is a nice place for a light lunch and, of course, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is great for coffee in the morning, and for people watching, one of Italy's oldest and favorite spectator sports.
