Everyone loves Lorgues. This is a small, hill village dating from 1100's with an outstanding Provencal market and great restaurants. The main street is shaded by Plane trees with small shops and local cafes that invite one to linger over wine and coffee and croissants watching the world go by.

The house is at the top of the village on a quiet cul de sac that is less than a 3 minute walk from the main street. It is called 'La Grange'. Somewhere in its 900 year old history it was a barn, but before that recent research indicates it was the residence of local monks associated with Saint Martins Parish. Its medieval lineage shows in the stone fleur de lys carving indicating it is one of the town's oldest dwellings.

Today it is a lovely 1500 sq. foot house on two floors. The remodeling was done 5 years ago by a local designer and the house has both a cozy and spacious feel. It has the most beautiful kitchen. If you want to try your hand at cooking some of the delicacies from the local markets, this is the house for you. WE hardly ever really cook, but often enjoy eating dinner at home after a day exploring the hill towns or at the coast or the golf course, and it's wonderful to prepare our purchases in such an ambiance... or on hot days take a simple dinner to the patio and contemplate the 1000 year old town wall adjacent to the courtyard.

The ground floor of the house has a living room with seating for 6, a fireplace, English and French language TV, stereo. The kitchen includes an excellent new 5 burner stove, frig, freezer, dishwasher, micro, coffee maker and all pots, pans, plates and glasses necessary. The dining room table seats 6 to 8, and gives onto a courtyard through large glass doors.

On the second floor the master bedroom is very large and light with tall ceilings, a skylight, and windows that open onto the courtyard. The air conditioner in the master bedroom keeps things comfortable in hot weather, but the house is stone and keeps cool itself as it is shaded during the hottest part of the day. There is a large bath with tadlakt finishes like those used on the palaces of Morocco. There is a large tub and shower wand, heated towel rack and a closet with washer, dryer, iron, etc. Hair dryers are included. This bedroom has its own study with desk, lounge chair and internet and computer hooked to the internet. Just turn it on and get your email.

The second bedroom is of good size with comfortable bed, closet and separate bath with sink and walk in shower. There is a separate toilet room.

The stairway leading to the 2nd floor is modern with an unguarded open side making it dangerous for small children. For this reason and the high quality of some of the furniture, the house is not suitable for small children.

There is parking, when available, in the courtyard next door. If not, in one of 2 town lots a block away.

We had the best time in a wonderful House in a beautiful Town. We appreciated the information which was left by the Owners, it helped us get the information regarding shopping, great places to visit, restaurants to go to, and do much more. We would love to do this again in the near future.

The title really says it all. This magical Provence home has all the modern comforts, a great floor plan and yet it is in an historic and lovely old town. Lorgues is beneath the radar for most tourists and we like that. It is every bit as charming and interesting as St. Remy de Provence but without the crowds and with much better access to the Cote d'Azure and the Alpes-Maritimes. We loved our stay and you will too. Bon Voyage!

We stayed in this gorgeous home for nearly two weeks and enjoyed every bit of it. It was perfect for our family of four--spacious rooms, charming decor, large kitchen and indoor/outdoor dining settings, entertainment for the kids on international TV and large family-friendly movie selection on the Apple TV. Yes, the little village of Lorgues was one of the cutest we encountered, with a fantastic market on Tuesdays (Italian clothes, shoes, great tapanades, spices, cheeses, freshly roasted potatoes and chicken...), but the location was superb for exploration of Provence as well. Within 20 minutes drive of the Mediterranean (check out Elephant beach, near St. Maxime), short drive from Gorges du Verdon and in the middle of France's wine country this is a terrific launching point for all of Provence. Besides the helpful regional guide provided by the owner, there is an extensive library of travel books for those who like to come without a plan and explore options once you reach your destination. The owner was very helpful in answering questions and the neighbors are friendly as well. Great value for a family on a budget.

From the moment the key turned in the door, we were home! This house, nestled in the ramparts of the old town, is beyond comfortable, with elegant designer touches. This was to be our base in Provence to tour the many sights of the region. Wine tasting, ancient hill towns, glitzy Côte d'Azure, vibrant street markets, all within easy driving. Each night our wonderful house welcomed us "home." Lorgues deserves a day to wander the ancient narrow streets. Less touristed than most in the region but every bit as interesting. Five stars isn't enough to award this comfortable, sophisticated home. We left with heavy hearts and can't wait to return.

I had such a wonderful stay at this lovely house. I would recommend it to anyone. It truly was such a great way to get a feel for France - you will fall in love any never want to leave! Lourges is just the cutest, quaintest little town and the house could not be any more lovely. I have no complaints whatsoever. It was even more beautiful than the pictures and description suggested - the kitchen is to die for, the bedrooms incredible (very comfy beds!), and the weekly market sells fresh produce one block away, making for a fantastic meal to be enjoyed in the gorgeous living room. Great restaurants and shops right down the street. Good location. This house will certainly make your France trip wonderful. I would stay here again!

What a delightful abode the owners have lovingly created. Down a quiet, winding road lined with cheerful geraniums lies this very special hideaway where you can blissfully retreat from the world. The stone walls, open beam ceilings, skylights all blend the very best of old world charm and modern sophistication. The kitchen is a chef's dream, the bathrooms are divine, and all the furnishings are both comfortable and elegant. This is my favorite of any rental home I have stayed at in Europe- the ideal place for getting away from it all and having a romantic vacation . The town is quaint and close to everything one could hope for- hiking and waterfalls for the nature enthusiast, Medieval villages for the history buff, great food and wine for the gourmand. The only thing one could hope for is more time in this magical environment!

I was lucky enough to stumble upon this VRBO rental while planning my trip to Provance, and had such a wonderful time that I just had to sit and write this review! For anyone looking to explore and relax in Southern France, this is the best base camp you could hope for. The home itself is stunning. The renaissance architecture and stone work take you back centuries, while simultaneously providing a modern, fully updated, beautiful house to enjoy. The kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, and entire living are are all quite extraordinary, and far exceed my expectations. Lorgues itself is the perfect staging point for exploring the area. Centrally located between the coast, the wine country, and the beautiful natural parks, everything is just a short drive. I also loved the quiet "off the map" quality of Lorgues, which has all the amenities of large village (restaurants, boutiques, supermarkets, coffee shops, etc.) but is not overrun by tourists as are many of the more historic villages which seem to get more attention in the guide books. Being a clean and quite village, it quickly felt like home as we came to know some of the local store owners and locals. If your looking for a perfect spot to hang your hat while soaking up the variety of sights in Southern France, you would be hard pressed to find a more delightful place home.

Let's start with the house! WOW! It is spacious, yet comfy and homey, and has all the modern amenities and comfort you could need nestled within a historical stone building. We would prepare a simple breakfast in the morning in the beautiful kitchen, but all other meals were spent out enjoying all the fabulous restaurants in the area. There is a quiet and secluded patio out the back door to enjoy an evening glass of wine on, and the court the house is on is quiet and safe. Now on to the town of Lorgues! The house is a short walk from the main street in Lorgues--by the way you will saunter down the cobble stone street to arrive on to the main street, and stroll by all of the other historical, stone homes, schools, and church that give this town the feeling of having 'stepped back in time'. The main street has a variety of coffee shops, tobacco shops, restaurants, bars, patisseries, and other 'mom-and pop's' owned by locals that give Lorgues it's small town feel. On Tuesdays there is a wonderful market where you can buy clothes, soaps, veggies, fruit, bread, shoes, linens, and all sorts of unique and original gifts to bring home. And while this may be a small town on the map, the restaurants prepare some of the best food I've ever had!! Everything from delicious Italian food to a rich cafe and croissant--you won't be disappointed. And finally the surrounding area! We enjoyed wine tasting at the local wineries (within a 10-15 minute drive). We visited Cannes and St. Tropez on the coast on day trips--we window shopped, people watched, sun-bathed, and ate more delicious food! We drove the winding southern coast, stopping at small towns to wonder the streets shopping, enjoy a glass of local wine, and visit a historical castle. We drove to the Lac St. Croix which is the most beautiful azure color I've even seen at a lake--sat on the tiny pebble beach, watching kayakers and boaters and picnic-ers enjoy a warm and sunny day. We visited old stone fortresses, churches, and villages--taking in the history and beauty of Provence. As you may be able to see our time in Lorgues was relaxing, yet full of adventure and fun. This house is optimally located for exploring the region--and yet it has a great ambiance for kicking off your shoes at the end of an exciting adventure to enjoy a glass of wine while feeling like you are 'at home';)

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: Bill and I live in northern California on 25 acres with our 5 sheep, 4 chickens, a small vineyard and our beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Buck. Bill was a banker and I was a French teacher at a local high school. 5 years ago, after retirement, we bought an apartment in Paris. But, marvelous as Paris is, we missed small town life. Last year we found the house of our dreams on the internet and sold Paris and bought this dreamy house in Lorgues. We spend 3 months a year in France, mostly in the spring and fall. We have furnished it with the wonderful things we bought for the Paris apartment. We hope those who rent it will love and treasure our things as we do. In France we love to shop, go to wineries, explore the hill towns, go to Aix shopping for antiques, go the Nice or Antibes for lunch or photograph the uniqueness of the area. And we love the people in Lorgues, their warmth and welcoming ways.

                      Why the Owner Chose Lorgues:
These colorful hill villages like Lorgues are a thousand years old. They are south facing, warm in the winter and cooler in the summer than the coast. They are much less crowded in July and August than the coastal beaches, but still are in close proximity to the glories of the Cote D'Azur. We can have the easy access and warmth of a small village with the glamour of the great colorful towns of Provence an easy hours drive. Lorgues is a 15 minute drive from the train station at Les Arc that serves the TGV from Paris and Nice.
