Historic Benicia is the first capitol of California, a stop on the Pony Express and has a colorful history. Its shops and restaurants are a short walk away on First Street. The active Benicia Marina is the site for Thursday night sailboat races during the season. This popular location is the gateway for the famous California Wine Country to the north and San Francisco to the west. Drive 15 minutes to the Vallejo Ferry Building and enjoy a boat ride to the 'city by the bay' and Fisherman's Wharf. Berkeley is only 30 minutes away and Sacramento is only an hour's drive. The snowy slopes of Tahoe are just beyond.
Thirty minutes away is Infineon Raceway with year round events and Discovery World Amusement Park open seasonally. There are many public golf courses and regional parks located close by.
Benicia is also adjacent to Mare Island, former Naval base, and Travis Air Force Base, as well as Touro University. If you are a bicycle enthusiast, the bike trial goes right by the front door with a circuit from the Benicia Bridge to the Carquinez Brige being a favorite. Fishing off the Benicia pier does not require a permit.
Benicia regularly plans events on First Street. The Farmers Market on Thursday late afternoon and Fire Engine Parades and Art Festivals among others will draw you to walk 'downtown'.
