  I hate to say how much we loved this place as I'm afraid it might not be available next time I want to book it. For dog lovers it is heaven, but it's just a very pleasant place in any case. Handy to beach, town, lovely yard, unpretentious beach house furnishings. The manager, Kelly, was always on hand to help advise on a few technical questions we had.

  Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children.

  I love the architecture and the combination of the old mission style with Ikea furnishings. Great moderate house that backs to jog trail and dog beach. Perfect home for pets! The owner provides beach toys and bikes that make for great morning rides. Positives: -location -pet friendly -great kitchen (though lacking a few basics noted below) including coffee grinder, nice pans, great fridge, some serving bowls, martini glasses -large living spaces for family gatherings -nice outdoor space with a yard and ample deck space -fully updated bathrooms -nice washer / dryer -beautiful landscaping -fantastic old fireplace for the rare chilly night Slightly lacking: -I cook, so I did brought a lot of things with me, but the house lacks measuring utensils, baking pans, blender -Closet / storage space is very very limited -While the house has been nicely updated, it is not pristine -Jet noise from San Diego Airport...but that applies to most of OB.... Could go either way... -The beds are very hard. If that is your preference, great...if not.... -Dining table really only suitable for 4 adults.... All in all...a good spot for the price.

  Me , my wife and a 10 month old golden retriever had a wonderful time, especially the 10 month old. The house is exactly as described, a comfortable, very updated, very dog friendly home. Dog Beach, out the back gate 200 yards left, is dog heaven. A tired 10 month old puppy is a good puppy! No other review has mentioned the restaurant O Bistro, a short 6 minute walk (across the street from the "famous" Dog Wash). FANTASTIC! Ate there 3 out of 4 nights. Overall a wonderful doggy vacation!

  We enjoyed our stay very much. I thought the property had some great upgrades there were a nice surprise. Everything was clean. It was a short walk on a paved path to the beach from the rental. The owner answered questions that we had about the area-- when we looked online, many people mentioned the area wasn't safe. I didn't find this to be the case at all. I never felt unsafe the entire time I was there, including walking around town at night. The environment is definitely a laid back beach town with the benefit that dogs seemed to be welcome almost everywhere we went. I would recommend dining at Shades bistro located within walking distance of the property. We also enjoyed Seaport Village and Balboa Park.

  I hesitate to post this review as I hate the thought of everyone knowing about "our place in San Diego." Clearly, from the look of Kelly's calendar and much to my dismay, many have discovered it. My family has been renting this fantastic spot for the past five years. We find Ocean Beach the most relaxing place on earth for us and our dogs. Kelly has made first class upgrades to this charming and deceptively spacious home. Kelly is not only responsive but amazingly talented and a super great person. My favorite thing about this home, other than the location, is the three to four separate living areas. There is a large living room in the front of the house with a television and stereo system and in the back there is a kitchen/family room/dining area combo. There is a fantastic private yard and an upstairs and downstairs deck. Kids and adults can have their own places and yet we can still all come together. There is an outside shower for de-sanding and the grass is thick and lush. It used to be that we had our pick of rental dates but in the past few years the best kept secret is now out of the bag. We have to book our weeks a year in advance!

  We had an absolutely wonderful time! We LOVED dog beach and the ability to open the back gate and be right on dog beach. Our golden retriever had the best vacation ever - oh and we had a great time too! Dog Beach is such an awesome place to take your socialized pups - dogs run free and play with each other in and out of the water. It was definitely a bucket list thing for me and we're thinking of making it a yearly vacation destination! The house was one of the better VRBO rentals we've had, but it did have some flaws as all home away from homes do. The pictures accurately depict the home and were a big help in deciding which home to rent for the week. Bring your own pillows if you're used to something fluffier - a lesson learned by us from previous experience with other rentals. The bedrooms are small, as to be expected with an older home - although this is not a flaw, its just something to be aware of when packing especially since there is a washer and dryer. =) The kitchen has been updated and has great appliances for a rental which is REALLY important, especially if you intend to eat in often, which we did. The backyard is fabulous and the patio is large enough for eating outdoors with shade - plus the rooftop deck is awesome for relaxing and enjoying the view! There were 4 bikes in the garage which we used to explore a bit further out of the area and enjoyed having them available. The owner was great - very accommodating and willing to resolve any issues we had. We did have a cleaning issue in addition to some laundry leftover and Kelly promptly refunded the cleaning fee - much appreciated! As for the location, we did not set the alarm and didn't have any problems, however we did have dogs with us. We loved the location and loved that many things were within walking distance - especially Surfrider Pizza Cafe on Abbott - be sure to check it out and tell Hillary we said hello! ;) Check out Newport Ave on Wednesday afternoons for the farmer's market because it is flippin' amazing! Loved the dog-friendly restaurants and so much more! We will be back!

  This is a great property! Any cleaning issues have been resolved. Kelly is very responsive, and my husband and I had no problems. I am very grateful to have a place to stay that is not a pit that will accept my dogs. Dog beach is steps from the door, although my pooches could only bark at the waves :O) They are used to the city, what can I say? Having said that, Ocean Beach is a beach town. If you want La Jolla, you should go pay La Jolla's prices. San Diego is very dog-tolerant town, which is good news and bad news. Don't be surprised to see alot of dogs off-leash and on patios in restaurants. In my experience, it doesn't matter the city, people are stupid everywhere, so protect your animals. Again, great stay! Beautiful property! Hope to be back!

  The house was in an amazing location...so close to the dog beach and the human beach, we walked to the beach every day during our stay. Also, very close to downtown OB, a very short walk with lots of dog friendly places to eat and relax. There were 6 of us with a dog and there was plenty of room for all of us. We would definitely recommend this house to our friends! Also, the parrots flying by in the mornings were an added bonus to our stay!

  The house is exactly as pictured, the location can not be faulted and Kelly was very responsive - however I do have a problem with paying a cleaning fee for a property that wasn't exactly clean. Upon our arrival we found a load of wash that took two washes to get the smell under control. The recycle bin was full and left in the laundry room, there was assorted trash bags and stuff on the counters that didn't belong there but the worst was no towels, washcloths or hand towels in the bathrooms, an eighth of a roll of toilet paper in the bathrooms and only a small amount of paper towels in the kitchen. The dishwasher normal cycle doesn't work. The washing machine leaked. The sheets were clean(?) but the comforters needed to be washed. Having said all of that, after cleaning everything locating some towels we enjoyed the location. Dog beach is great, the bikes needed new tubes as they were flat - go to the used bike shop a few blocks up the women was fantastic and provided a place for us to change the tubes we purchased. The bike paths are great but the area is very bike friendly so its great to ride around. Be sure to check out the farmers market on Wednesday, go hungry. All in all we did enjoy our stay. You will enjoy the kitchen, sunroom and decks a lot. Be sure to look for the parrots in the palm tree next door. A side note to Kelly, touch up the paint on the walls, the hand prints, scrapes and dirt on the walls just isn't a good first impression. Oh and wipe down the base boards they are filthy. Also you need to replace the outlet plate behind the brown leather chair in the corner of the sun room by the deck. The outlet is hanging out of the jbox - very unsafe.

  My family enjoyed our stay in Dog Beach, the area was quiet with easy access to the beach. The house was a nice old home; and we loved that it had a washer and dryer. One thing I do recommend is staying at a house with an alarm system and making sure you have insurance in place to cover your own personal items if anything is stolen. One evening while we were out for dinner the house was broken into - the owner was excellent he replaced his TV that was stolen and installed an alarm system by the next day. It is a bit of a hike to the bus stop but the service is excellent and it is only a 15 minute ride to the main transfer station that takes you anywhere in San Diego (all the way to the big box shopping on the California/Mexico border ((for $5.00 you can buy a 24 hour continuous pass)) that you could possibly want to go. The walk to the Newport Beach area is quite lovely, both on the beach and street side, where there are great places to eat. And, on Wednesday in the late afternoon they close the Newport street down for a Farmer's Market which is one of the best I have ever attended - music - great food and the best people watching opportunity around. We loved it!
