Hacienda Punta Indio is a 5 bedroom hacienda-style home located on the top of a ridge overlooking Samara Beach. While it's only an 8-minute drive to Samara's towncenter, this house offers complete privacy, with the only sounds being the surf, howler monkeys, and birds. It is the only house on the small peninsula called Punta Indio (Indian Point) that separates the two horse-shoe shaped beaches of Samara and Carrillo. The house is on an elevated platform and is surrounded by 60 acres of pristine jungle and has fantastic views, both of the Samara Beach coastline and the small island of Isla Chora. Both beaches are within easy walking distance or a 2-minute drive, plus there is a jungle path that leads to a third private beach called Half Moon Bay.
The house is designed so the the kitchen, living room, and dining room are all together at one end. Near the kitchen is a laundry room, an air-conditioned walk-in pantry, a main washroom, and one of the bedroom suites. At the other end of the house are the other 4 separate bedroom suites. Each of the 5 suites is self-contained - with a king-size bed, an en-suite washroom, a front door and a back door, remote-control air-conditioning, a side table and lamp, along with plenty of storage space. The bedroom suites are well insulated, keeping them cool and quiet. They also have their own separate entrance (and key) so that even with a large group, everyone is guaranteed plenty of personal space. Doors from each of these 4 bedrooms open to the front and have a pool view. The back doors open onto a lanai overlooking a grove of mango trees that is a favorite place for monkeys. The 5th bedroom - near the dining room - has a sitting room, an en-suite bathroom, and its windows have only a back view of the mango grove, not of the pool. The house has internet through a wireless router and reception is very reliable.
The infinity pool is large enough to comfortably accommodate a group of 10 and because it is salt-water, there is very little chlorine smell. From the pool, you can enjoy great views of Samara Beach, impressive both at day and night. From the pool, the sunsets are amazing. But you may be just as mesmerized by the surrounding jungle with its vast green canopy going on for miles and miles around. From the poolside, these views will entertain you from sun-up to sun-down. At night, the lack of surrounding lights makes for spectacular star-gazing.
This house works especially well for a group or large family. The inside area and the outside areas are very large and can be opened right up to make the space seem un-ending. There are 3 sets of sliding wooden doors that can be opened to allow ocean breezes to flow through.
Please note that this is NOT a 5-star accommodation. It is not outfitted with fine furnishings or gold-plated faucets; it is designed to be simple, comfortable, and functional. Its peaceful, natural surroundings are well suited to those on a yoga retreat, nature photographers, bird-watchers, people seeking an out-of-the-way spot who like to explore on their own or a group who is looking for something different. If some people wish to retire early at night, they can be assured of a quiet room, and their own en-suite bathroom.
The property has a paved driveway leading right to the carport. Ask Jorge, our caretaker, to show you our 5 well-maintained walking trails, each leading to a lookout point and a great view of not only Playa Carrillo and Playa Samara, but also a close-up view of Isla Chora Island and the open ocean. Check out Google Earth map to get an idea of the size and proportions of the peninsula. The house, with its red roof, is visible in the centre of it, and you can also see the various walking paths. Hacienda Punta Indio is located between two fantastic beaches, Samara and Carrillo. It's an easy walk to either one, though most people prefer to drive. (The driveway is quite steep due to it's high elevation.) It is not a difficult walk though, and is an enjoyable way to watch monkeys, squirrels and iguanas en route.
Hacienda Punta Indio is a great place for families to hang out in. Its large covered porch provides plenty of shade throughout the day and its very large dining room is centrally located, with plenty of seating. Comfy sofas, several lounge chairs and a hammock all provide good places for book-readers. One of the things we've noticed over the years is that because there is so few houses nearby, the sky is dark enough for great stargazing. We have often spotted falling stars. Watching storms in the distance from the pool by day and stars at night is fantastic.
At the entrance, there is a completely private gate providing access to only the Punta Indio beach house. There is also a house perimeter alarm system and a room safe.
The kitchen, while very basic, has most things you will need during your stay, including a gas barbecue. A unique feature is a walk-in air-conditioned pantry for food storage. Next to it is a laundry room.
Monkeys are usually never very far away and can often be heard, and usually found, somewhere on the Punta Indio property. It is possible to see families of monkeys in the trees by the pool, other times they are hanging out in the trees near the driveway. Iguanas are frequently seen scooting into culverts near the carport. And at night, small owls like to fly from the roof and dart past the pool lights, looking for any flying insects. It is truly a nature-lover's paradise. Regarding insects: because of the property's higher elevation, there are noticeably fewer mosquitoes here than down at beach-level restaurants in the evening.
A car is recommended, although taxis are plentiful, reliable and inexpensive. Ask me for a list of preferred taxis.
Children are welcome but please be aware of the many potential dangers. Swimming pool is not fenced plus there are sharp drop-offs on edge of pool deck. There is a large shaded canopy area that DOES provide excellent shade from the sun....moreless
Attached to the house is a carport. It provides covered parking for 3 SUV's. Floors are tiled and it is extremely easy to unload luggage from your vehicle and wheel it straight into the bedrooms....moreless

Punta Indio is a peninsula of land approximately 150 acres in size - the rental property consists of about 60 acres and is the only structure on the property. It is essentially an untouched nature reserve: a wooded forest that is home to many types of birds, families of howler monkeys, and iguanas (the smaller species called gorobos). From your own private pool, you can see gorgeous Playa Samara, and the surrounding jungle mountainside. Punta Indio is a peninsula that separates 2 very large beaches, so they are both within easy walking distance. From the beach house, you can walk a short ways and have a stunning view of Playa Carrillo on the other side. Or take a longer walk and overlook the small islet known as Isla Chora and Playa Samara from a different angle. There paths are fairly well-maintained though caution is always advised. For nature lovers, the spectacular views and glimpses of wildlife are immensely enjoyable. This region is a photographer's dream: lush forest, rugged coastline. It is a short drive to the town of Samara where you can enjoy many great restaurants, activities, boutiques and stores, and all the amenities you could want. But it is always a treat to come back and enjoy your completely private hideaway. Samara is a very cute town with a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. You can have lunch at many restaurants with your table right on the beach. You can rent horses, boogie-boards (for $2/day), surf boards, ATV's, bicycles. You can go ocean- kayaking, take surfing lessons, or go zip-lining with WingNuts Canopy Tours, truly a world-class tour.
Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: The 60 acres on Punta Indio is owned by a small group of mostly Canadians. We built the beach house and its infinity-edge pool in 1995 and, for more than a decade our families have spent our winter vacations there. It is a great place for extended families or for 3 or 4 couples. When our families became too large for us to all fit in this house, we each built a home on the 7 acres of Samara Reefs gated community. Hacienda Punta Indio remains a wonderful, special paradise.
Why the Owner Chose Samara:
We chose this property because of its fantastic location: it is the only house on a huge, forested peninsula that separates 2 gorgeous horseshoe-shaped beaches: Samara Beach and Carrillo Beach. The peninsula has many trails, 6 of which lead to awesome terraces, some with views of Samara, some of Carrillo, one overlooking the tiny island called Isla Chora, and some overlooking the open ocean. The property comprises over 60 acres which is like a private wildlife reserve - it is home to many families of howler monkeys, green iguanas, and a huge variety of birds. Being located half-way between Playa Carrillo and Playa Samara, it is easy to visit both beaches. There is also a third beach called Bahia Media Luna (half-moon bay) - it is only accessible through our property, by kayak, or by walking around the rocky, craggy point. When we built the house, we and 2 of the other partners had very young children so we designed the swimming pool to be very child-friendly. We included a shallow 'beach' where toddlers could sit with their parents in the water but also included a deep long section where swimmers could do laps. The house is ideal for children and families and we have some very special memories. For family reunions or 4 couples, this house works extremely well; every bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom and is self-contained with doors that have their own keys. The large social area next to the kitchen can accommodate 12 people easily. Hacienda Punta Indio is a 7-8 minute drive to Samara on all paved roads. It's a relatively easy walk to beach, and being a bit away from the action in town, it is a bit of a 'retreat'. After a busy day playing at the beach, there is nothing better than coming back to your personal, private paradise here at Punta Indio. Nothing beats soaking in its warm, salt-water pool and gazing out at its truly spectacular panoramic ocean view.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Complete Privacy: your own salt-water, infinity-edge pool on your own 60 acres of jungle paradise. From your doorstep, you can explore many walking paths, seeing monkeys in their natural habitat, a variety of birds, iguanas (gorobos), bats, owls, and red-tailed squirrels. From Punta Indio, you are within walking distance to 3 beaches: Carrillo, Samara and a private little-known beach in-between called Half-Moon Bay (Bahia Media Luna). The 5 private bedroom suites give everyone his or her own space. The lack of nearby lights makes for fabulous star-gazing at night. Punta Indio has a trusted care-taker couple to help you should you need any assistance with the pool, a/c, or room safe. Jorge will meet you at the gate upon your arrival and our Housekeeper, Flory, will come to do light housekeeping every 3 days. The beach house is on 60 acres of private jungle yet next to two of the country's prettiest beaches, and all the amenities you could ask for in two nice small towns. There are many great restaurants and enough activities to keep you busy every day of your trip!
