San Pedro house description
Welcome to CASITA TORTUGA BELIZE, your 'home away from home' vacation rental! Our home has been called 'one of the prettiest homes in San Pedro'!!
Our private oceanfront home is located in a small residential neighborhood of local professionals and families in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye is the largest island in the Country of Belize and is surrounded by the Carribean Sea.
Our home features light and airy, tasteful, beachouse-style decor, and is very clean and well-maintained. The large master bedroom has queen-sized bed and ample dresser and closet space for your belongings. The guest room also has queen-sized bed with built-in storage. The bathroom features a tub and shower. There is a comfortable living room, dining room and kitchen. There are ceiling fans throughout and AC is provided in the bedrooms and living/dining room. There's a washing machine, and wireless internet is provided. Air mattresses are also available upon request for those two-family vacations; parents sleep in the bedrooms and kids sleep in the living room 'sleep-over' style.
Relax on the large wooden deck that wraps three sides of the home, which offers plenty of seating, or take a nap in a hammock in the large overwater palapa. The palapa has lighting and electricity for those who want to telecommute with their feet in the sand! There is also a large gas grill with a side burner out on the deck for BBQing the catch of the day. And Yes! That is actual salvaged 'shipwreck' rope and fish netting used for the deck railing and the column on the front porch!
The private yard is beautifully maintained and features deep white sand and lush, tropical palm trees and flowering shrubs, with lots of shade and refreshing ocean breeze. There is an outdoor shower located up the side of a palm tree for those 'al fresco' showers, and the yard even has a white picket fence! Do you like orchids? Well wait until you see some of the orchids that we have collected over the years...some are nearly 5' tall! Look for them in the trees, on the railings, even on the house.
Easy boat access is provided via a short ocean canal (285') of the Carribean Sea and there is a concrete seawall that extends across the back property line/ocean edge. There is a water spigot located at the seawall to conveniently rinse the boat and gear off after a day in the sea. There is an iguana in the backyard that lives in a rock on the seawall...we call her Juana. She's shy, but she likes rice and tortilla chips! And for those bird watchers, we are regularly visited by Great Kiskadee's, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Herons, Pelicans, Egrets, etc., so be on the lookout!
The house features alot of hand-painted artwork by the owners, from the window shutters, to the outdoor seating, to driftwood art, to the power poles out front! This gives the house a funky, island vibe! Check out our palm tree bar table that we made in the backyard! Perfect for enjoying your evening cocktail while watching the Carribean sun set into the sea.
San Pedro Town is a long and skinny town of mostly un-paved streets, although a few of the Downtown area streets now feature cobblestone pavers. Our home is located 2 miles southwest of the heart of San Pedro Town, 1.6 miles southwest of the San Pedro Airport, and 0.6 miles to the nearest grocery store and public beach.
Being our guests has it's advantages! This may include personalized pick-up from the airport, coordinating your discounted rates on tours and excursions, coordinating golf cart transportation, etc. Housekeeping service is also available. We'll even let you know where the best restaurants are and where to shop for daily groceries! Just let us know how we can make your vacation to San Pedro 'your best vacation ever!'

The house was comfortable, but that's about the only accurate statement the property owners make in their listing. They advertise it as being in a small residential neighborhood with local professionals. It is a very noisy , garbage strewn unkept neighborhood. I specifically asked before signing the lease about noise. Donna said " there may be a little music in the evening, but that's it". She forgot to mention that her home is located directly under the flight pattern of the airport. This means flights start at 7 AM every morning and continue until dark. They are very noisy and fly very low over the house. They even started at 6 AM on several occasions. When I emailed her about this after a few days her answer stated that it is indicated in her listing that the house is located 1.6 miles from the airport and that the flight pattern is not always in that direction. We endured this noise for one month and they never changed their flight pattern. Listing also states there would be 2 bikes. One was stolen before our arrival. I emailed her several times asking about a replacement. Donna's answer, go rent one. I did not feel I should have to pay additional bike rental fees. After a few weeks the bike was finally replaced. Large patches of black mold in the tub area as well as a very moldy plastic shower curtain liner. Stained linens and bedspread, yet they charge an outrageous amount when you leave for laundering the linens. I asked about swimming in the private oceanfront they speak of before renting, and was told by Donna that you could swim there. Upon arrival Charles said you can't swim at the property and I would never swim in that water. Refrigerator runs constantly, outside very hot, and does not keep food cold. When I asked the property manager to check it he promised to come back 2 times. He never came back to do anything so we had a very high electric bill because of this. Internet access was sporadic. Closet, cupboards and dresser in the bedrooms are full of the property owners personal clothing. I had to move their clothes from the dresser to have access for my belongings in the dresser. The neighbor, who is also Charles's nephew, left several times during our stay in the middle of the night. Before leaving he boards all the windows up with pieces of wood and uses a screw gun to do so. Very noisy and inconsiderate to others who may not be on the same schedule. I would not recommend this rental to anyone. The listing description is not accurate.

Owner response: It's difficult to respond when someone doesn't tell the truth or purposly misleads others, but very necessary so here goes. Our home is in a neighborhood of local, everyday Belizeans. We keep our home/yard in immaculate condition but, just like everywhere else, not all people do the same. Americans own the house next door, the police chief lives next to them. Around the corner are a few homes owned by Canadians, a local boat mecanic, a doctor across from them (she makes house calls). Across the street is an electrician, two doors down a custom furniture maker, and a few more police officers live on the corner. Flight pattern for the airport is the entire south half of the half-mile wide island; actual routes will vary depending on the season mostly due to wind direction for the small planes. Duration of the flight/noise is about 3-5 seconds, every 30-60 minutes, during daytime unless for emergency, and a lawnmower/blower makes more noise than the planes. One bike was stolen prior to this guests' arrival and was replaced with a brand new bike on the 8th morning of their month-long stay; we would have been happy to cover their bike rental in the meantime. There was a small amout of mildew (not mold) in the shower/curtain upon their checkout (showers and the Belize climate are humid) and should have been cleaned by them prior to their departure, we provide cleaning products (they were not charged for cleaning). We never discussed swimming in the canal and we do not advertise that you can; rather, the nearest swimmng beach is about a half-mile away (5-min. walk). Appliances are regularly maintained and in proper working order; caretaker came by on numerous occasions to take a look but guests were not at home and coordination was challenging as they declined our offer of a rent-free cell phone for use during their stay. The guests emailed often and never mentioned internet difficulty until this review; internet provider provides outage documentation, none was reported. We state in our listing that we LIVE here, therefore some clothing is there. The closet in the master bedroom is more than half empty, the large dresser and both nightstands are completely empty, all storage in the guest room is empty, which is more than adequate for any vacationing guest. We were just home for an extended Easter vacation and our quiet neighbor never left in the middle of the night or boarded the home. If you need further information please do not hesitate to email me. Cheers!
Cute, cozy and comfortable, Charles was superb as a guide and host. The price was good but we did not like the trash and unkept neighborhood. Also the flights over the house starting a 7am were bothersome. The neighbors were friendly and helpful. We would have washed the sheets if we knew how much the cost to clean them was. Charles said he would take us on a boat trip but that never happened. Overall I would rate the house a c plus. There was only one bike available but we were told 2 were there. I love Belize and the people. Gary

Owner response: Thanks Tracy and Gary for taking the time to review your stay at Casita Tortuga Belize! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and having you as our guests, and Charles too was bummed out as the two times that he was in town during your stay and could have taken you out in the boat the weather did not cooperate! But that is how is goes in the Tropics... Our home is a small neighborhood of local "San Pedranos" and while we do everything we can to maintain our property immaculately as you would expect and as is typical for vacationing in the States, not every Belizean takes care of their property the same; this is true throughout the island. We do apologize that one of our personal bikes were stolen in town and so it was unavailable for your use. Please know that it has already been replaced with a brand new bike! There is a small airstrip on the island and depending on the season (and wind direction) some flights will traverse over the house. These are short-duration commuter planes however and they only run during the daytime but it is important to mention which is why we bring attention to it in our listing. In order to continue to maintain the cleanest of environments for our guests, we strip the beds down to the bare mattresses and wash everything between guests. There is nothing like knowing that you are sleeping on clean and fresh linens, especially in a rental property! Thank you again for your stay with us and for giving us "4 Stars out of 5"! We appreciate the opportunity to continue to improve our home for future guests... We wish you all the best! Donna and Charles
the best vacation ever
the best vacation ever
I have just returned from staying at this welcoming home. I am counting the days for when I return. My nephew, his girlfriend and I arrived on January 1, 2013. Charles greeted us and with Antonio, the taxi driver and we started our vacation. When you meet someone from San Pedro as Charles is, the information provided is outstanding. He gave us names of people to contact and places to see and eat. We did all it. What is so impressive to me, is the degree to which you are welcomed when you take Charles up on the information. Charles and Donna's family becomes your family. The house is so cool, full of warmth and character. We were blessed to connnect with Antonio who gave us a phone to call him whenever we needed a ride. His word is honourable, his response was true. This also reflective of Charles' brother Martin who arranged for us to experience the best catamaran adventure possible. His family being El Captain MJ, first mate Jody and Ricky as the fish whisper are extensions of the classiness demonstrated by this Belizian family. This family classiness also extends to restaurants - if you want a true Belizian meal check out El Fagon and to the aunt (i hope i have that right) Shelley (my name too!!!!!) whose Bistro made the best vegetarian meal on the whole island. Many thanks to both Donna and Charles. Your warmth is felt in your words, your actions, your family and your home that you have been gracious enough to share. Much love shells ps waiting for the receipe :))))))

Owner response: Thanks 'Shells' for your thoughtful review! We both enjoyed having you and your family as our guests at Casita Tortuga and we are so thrilled that you "made yourselves at home!" We are also delighted that you all (all 14 of you there for a family wedding) enjoyed your catamarran trip with Lady Leslie Tours (Martin is Charles' Brother and MJ is Charles' nephew) and you enjoyed your dinners at El Fagon and Mestizo Bistro (both owned by cousins of Charles). And we are especially happy that our family to extended you a warm FAMILY welcome as well! And Charles must have really liked you all, because he never agrees to share his recipes with anybody! :) I will make sure that he gets you that recipe for coconut pie! See you soon!
Great Honeymoon Spot!
Great Honeymoon Spot!
My wife and I took our Honeymoon to Belize this year and had a great time in Casita Tortuga. The house was very nice and everything was as described in the listing. The owner, Charlie, is native to San Pedro and was there to meet us at the airport. He took us around and gave us a very good tour as to where to go, what to see, and who to deal with on the Island. I joked with him that when he retires he should move back to San Pedro and be mayor because he seriously knows everyone there!!! We had some unfortunate weather when we first arrived and so we pretty much locked up the first two days. The price of this house was very comparable to other hotel rooms that we looked at and what a difference it made to be able to stretch out and still enjoy yourself even though there was a lot of rain. The outdoor space was great but again we had some unlucky weather so we did not get to utilize it very much which is too bad because a BBQ there would have been great. I would definitely come back to Casita Tortuga and would definitely recommend it to someone else traveling to Belize. Getting a golf cart is convenient but can be expensive when you consider it is only a $5 cab ride to and from downtown. I would definitely look at your schedule and rent your golf cart for 24-48 hours at at time as needed and take a cab the rest of the time. If you are no in any big hurry it is no problem the cab will be there 10 minutes after you call and they are easy enough to find when you are down town.

Owner response: Thank you David for your stay at Casita Tortuga and for your great review! You two are such troopers because during your stay the first tropical storm of the season passed through for 2 days, early for typical rainy season, and you guys just rolled with it! But thats the tropics, you never know what the weather will be like, and good for you for not letting the weather ruin your vacation! That is why Charles always advises guests that if you have a sunny day then you should get out there and enjot it, take a tour, go diving or snorkeling, and save the down days for the inclement weather. And those are great tips for golf carts and cab rides! You are correct, a cab ride to town is really that cheap! However we always recommend a golf cart for travel during rainy season as most of the roads in San Pedro are not paved and can be potholed and puddled, making travel by bike or on foot less convenient. And guests should make sure that their cell phones work in Belize before they travel so that they are able to call cabs and make other arrangements as needed. Thanks again for choosing Casita Tortuga and for taking the time to write your review. Best wishes to you both for a long and happy marriage! Donna and Charles. PS...we LOVE your comment about Charles becoming mayor someday! Funny, he is thinking about it! Cheers!
A true home-away-from-home!
A true home-away-from-home!
My husband and I stayed at Casita Tortuga for a week and could not have been happier with the accomodations. We flew into San Pedro and were greeted by Charles, who even after waiting for hours due to our delayed flight, greeted us with a warm welcoming smile. He had already arranged for a golf cart for us and after helping load our luggage onto the cart set off to show us the Casita. When we arrived at the Casita we were pleasantly surprised to find the refrigerator fully stocked with cold beer and other necessities! The Casita was everything we hoped it would be and more. The furnishings are island classy yet comfortable and the decor is just perfect! The location is close to everything yet private enough that you can take a break from being a tourist. Charlie offered to show us around town and we had a wonderful time learning more about the island. We had stayed in San Pedro two other times prior but it was like a different world being with a true "local". We were introduced to a few restaurant owners and other locals, everyone knows "Charlie" and "Charlie" knows everyone. We truly felt like locals too! We ate at Lilie's that night and it became one of our favorite places to eat after that. As an added bonus since they knew that we were friends of Charlie's, they gave us a discount off our bill everytime! The next day Charles took us out in his boat and it was so wonderful to walk right out of "our" place and get into his boat in just a few steps. He took us snorkling in the protected area off the reef. We had a wonderful day and saw the most amazing fish. Charles left the next day and we felt like we had made a friend for life. The rest of our stay was so relaxing. We shopped at the "Purple Store" and used the BBQ that the Casita has on the deck to make dinner a couple nights and it was so nice to have the option of not going out if we didn't feel like it. We purchased a movie at the video store and watched it at the Casita on another night then spent the evening out at the palapa by the water. The palapa was my favorite place to relax and read. I can not think of one thing negative to say about our stay. If you are looking for a wonderful, relaxing place to stay, this is the place. Donna and Charles are an added bonus to this beautiful little slice of heaven! They made the whole process from beginning to end a delight and went above and beyond to help us in anyway they could! We will never stay anywhere else in San Pedro again.

Owner response: Jack and Terresa were such wonderful guests in our home! They treated our home like they would their own home and we were so pleasantly surprised that upon their checkout our home was left in immaculate condition! It was like they were never there! Even the grill, which we know that they used as they kept us to date on their activities and adventures by email! Jack and Terresa were fantastic guests, and when it came to their last day and the refrigerator, they decided to "pay it forward". When they arrived at Casita Tortuga the fridge was stocked with all sorts of drinks and treats; so upon their leaving, they too left all sorts of drinks and treats for the next guests! That was a an awesome gesture! We had a wonderful experience meeting Jack and Terresa and we really have met "friends for life"! We are so thrilled that they chose Casita Tortuga as their "home away from home" and are even more thrilled that they will choose us again for their next vacation to San Pedro! Cheers!
My daughter and I stayed here for 10 days in December 2011. It was my second trip to the island but the first time staying in a home. Casita Tortuga is everything advertised. Charles picked us up at the airport with our cart ready to go. He showed us the grocery store and gas station on the way to the casita. Once there Charles gave us all the tips we needed for food and recreation. It was flawless. Charles hooked us up with SeaDuced the local travel group and we were treated like royalty (because we "knew" Charles). The morning after our arrival Charles took us out to the barrier reef to enjoy some special snorkling time. We took several excursions to the mainland with SeaDuced and had a fabulous time seeing the ruins, cave tubing, zip-lining, and nature immersion. One day we took a small boat around the uninhabited local islands to do some birding and get up close and personal with a croc or two. The unspoiled nature of Belize is breathtaking and Casita Tortuga was an ideal home base. I love San Pedro, and staying at a 'local' casita is the best way to experience it all.

Owner response: Thank you Mark for your wonderful review of your stay at Casita Tortuga! It was certainly our pleasure to have you stay at our home, and Charles was more than happy to provide you with the personalized service that you and Bella received. It makes all the difference to provide our guests with an immaculate "home" environment and offer excellent customer service! To have us arrange for your golf cart, pick you up at the airport, and schedule your tours, as well as introduce you to a few friends, local restaurants, grocery stores, etc. is all paramount to the success of your trip! I should take this opportunity to mention that we also like to leave the fridge stocked with a few items like local beer and sodas for you to sample upon your arrival! :) Thank you again for choosing Casita Tortuga and we hope that when you come back to San Pedro you will again be our guests! Cheers!

About the owner: My name is Donna, and my Husband, Charles, was born and raised in San Pedro. He has over 100 extended familiy members on the island so we have some deep roots here and we come 'home' often! If fact, Charles and I met each other in San Pedro in 2004 when I traveled to San Pedro on a 'girls trip'! Our first date was right here at Casita Tortuga where Charles made me and my friends the most incredible dinner! That was it! A year and a half later we were married on the beach in San Pedro and our wedding reception was on the property just adjacent to Casita Tortuga, some 250 people, what a party! That is what makes this home so special. This is not your typical rental home....This is our HOME! We LIVE here! And when our guests are not here, we continue to live here. We hope that you love our home as much as we do!!
Why the Owner Chose San Pedro:
Our home is so perfectly located just south of town, in a small residential neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle on the main streets in the heart of town. Shopping and beaches and tours are just a walk away into town, and taxi cabs are easy to catch at the nearest cross street.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
When we're not painting something or creating some other art, we enjoy taking naps in the palapa or fishing off the back seawall. When we get thirsty we cut down a coconut from the trees, hack off some of the outer shell, and poke a straw inside for a refreshing drink. You should try it! We both LOVE to cook so the grill sees alot of action. Look around in the sand, sometimes you can find a hermit crab which is fun for the kids, but make sure you release him after a few hours!
