We loved our stay in New Orleans. Of our group of four, none of us had been here before. The property was so in line with the feel of old New Orleans- an older house, renovated to maintain the flavor of the neighborhood, and only 1 to 2 miles from the French Quarter. A nice addition was having the use of 4 bikes so we could lazily peddle the area and be able to get down to the Quarter without having to deal with traffic, parking, etc. And Sully (the property owner) guided us to some great local restaurants. If you want a place that's close to the French Quarter and just oozes the ambience of old New Orleans, this is your place.

If you want to experience N'awleans as a native, stay here. The house is comfortable, roomy, eclectic, with a wonderful porch and garden (flowers, vegetables, herbs, growing in abandon). The location is good--close to everywhere you want to go. Bicycles are there if you don't want to take a cab or don't have a car. I often judge rental houses on kitchen facilities, and these are the best I have seen, anywhere. We can't wait to go back!

I had high expectations after reading the reviews for this property. And our experience far exceeded them. The house is done up in a distinctive quirky style and has tons of space, indoors and outdoors. The laptop and cell phone that are yours to use have to be the final word in thoughtfulness. The garden in the back is a pleasure and many spring flowers were coming into bloom during our stay. There's also a patio off the kitchen with ample seating - great place for morning tea/coffee or evening relaxation. The bathroom with the bathtub is very special with a glass wall looking out into the garden. The bedroom attached to this bathroom has a bed that is pretty high and may be problematic for some people to get in and out of. Sully was a wealth of knowledge about everything we needed to know and was prompt with her responses - from directing us to the nearest co-op to suggesting evening music venues. The location of this property is very attractive because you are in a residential neighborhood and within easy walking or biking distance to Frenchmen Street. Our vacation would not have been as pleasurable if we hadn't stayed at the Sanitarium. I would definitely stay here if I visited NOLA again. Highly highly recommend this place.

One of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed. The remodel is gorgeous and the photos on the site only do it partial justice. It is an extremely comfortable house and the owner provides everything from a well-stocked bar (honor system) to a cell phone to bikes (with locks) to make your stay easier and more fun. Plenty big for two couples (though I was there on my own). I used the bikes constantly and felt perfectly comfortable tooling back and forth to Frenchman even quite late at night. Love Bywater, love this house. Don't hesitate.

I loved the characteristic of the house. It felt like someone invited us to stay at their house, rather than visiting a rental house. The house was very close to the French Quarter. We walked there a few times and we used the bikes that were present. Overall an address to remember and to come back to !

As I write this reveiw, our family is already planning our next trip to NOLA. Sully's Bywater rental is the perfect place to stay, with lots of room and character. I will admit that we were a little concerned when we got off the highway and into the Bywater neighborhood. It's nothing like our perfectly manicured Florida golf community, but in retrospect that's what makes NOLA so special. What concerned us in the first few hours of our stay quickly faded. People in New Orleans are so incredibly friendly, and never once treated us like tourists. We felt safe, no matter the time of day. The Marigny-Bywater neighborhood is such a eclectic mix of cafes, art studios, bars and homes in various stages of renovation. Sully is a great host and has really put a lot of thought into making her rental user friendly. The photos of the inside of the house don't really do it justice. There is funky artwork and little decorations all around. You can tell that the inside of the home is still under renovation, but it in no way impacts the overall appearance. I will admit that the back yard is rough and not really user friendly. However, it's not much of a detractant since all your time will be spent navigating NOLAs historic streets. In retrospect, we should have used the bikes that were left for our use. I think we logged about 25 miles on foot in our 4 day stay. Sully even has thought to leave bike locks for you to use when out on the town. By the way, Bywater is not far from the French Quarter at all. If you took a bike, the ride might take you 5 minutes. We will definitely staying at Sully's place the next time we're in town. It's a great place for a great price.

Owner response: Wow! Michelle thank you so much for taking the time to write such a helpful review! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and sorry to hear you didn't get to take the bikes out, that's something that a lot of people have some apprehension about doing but can be so rewarding. Thank you also for the comment on the back yard. It has been in this rough state since the hurricane and really is sorely lacking attention. I promise that by the time you come back it will be the lush little backyard paradise that it used to be!!

This property is a completely renovated home with found materials, owner-done labor of love. It's wonderful. What you see are reclaimed materials used inventively, tastefully and full of fun for the process. There is a big garden out back, and the owner is very available for any issues that may arise. The neighborhood is a short bike ride into the French Quarter, and there are four bikes we were able to borrow. We absolutely loved our stay and really don't feel the need to branch out anytime soon whenever we would plan to return.

As the other reviews state, the Sanitarium is a wonderful place to stay when visiting New Orleans. Most of the other reviews are for adult groups staying there, so I wanted to cover it from a family standpoint. We have three kids, 15, 13 and 12. They’re old enough now that sharing the bed is not an option so when I read the listing, I wasn’t sure if the unit would work for us. We let Sully know our needs and when we arrived she had set the second bedroom up with two nice twin beds in addition to the queen that’s already in there. It worked perfectly. We were totally impressed with the work Sully had put into the place. It was comfortable and the finish and decorations were appropriately funky. You might think that with no cable or local TV, the kids would stage a revolt. It was actually nice not having that distraction. They took advantage of the internet (we brought iPads and Sully has a laptop in the unit) and popped in a DVD one evening. Be sure to use the recommendations Sully has on her website. Every one we tried was a winner. We did Café Mauarepas one night, and had breakfast at Satsuma and Cake Café. Location-wise, we wound up taking cabs when we went into the French Quarter in the evenings since parking in the Quarter is a pain and the unit is a little far from the trolley lines. The area itself is in a rebuilding mode, so it’s got a different vibe than the Garden District. When we were driving in at night, the route in from the freeway had us going past some sketchy areas, which had the kids freaking a little, but once we got to our block and they got inside the Sanitarium, everything was cool. Speaking of our arrival, be aware that the second Saturday night of the month is kind of an open house for the galleries in the area, which impacts availability of the on-street parking (another good reason to use a cab in the evenings). Finally, I can’t say enough about how accommodating Sully was. We had an incident with the kitchen sink the first night we were there and by the time we got back from our afternoon jaunt the next day, she had personally replaced the entire faucet unit.
