Taos house description
Vistas, indoors and out, grace this artist’s retreat in Taos, NM. Our comfortable home has ample room for peaceful meditation or socializing. The Skies is a sprawling adobe on nearly five acres of sage-covered mesa. 18-inch thick mica- and straw-flecked adobe walls, supporting vigas and a kiva fireplace, hand-made doors, copper and hand-painted Mexican tiles all give this home its roots in traditional Southwestern design. Four sets of 8-foot high, glass, screened French doors , vast windows and high ceilings, make the most of The Skies’ spectacular mountain views.
Set in Las Colonias, The Skies is an easy and beautiful drive from the museums, restaurants, shops and galleries around Taos Plaza (6.2 miles), Taos Ski Valley (16.6 miles), Taos Pueblo (7.2 miles), the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (8.1 miles) and numerous other local treasures. Intriguing sights, shops and restaurants abound along these routes.
Enter through adobe archways into the covered portal from which a heavy wooden door opens into the front hall, with a small seating area and original artwork. From there you may enter the great room, the heart of the house. At one end is a kiva fireplace, comfortable seating and tall, glass French doors. In the center is an elegant dining area with a table which can easily accommodate ten guests. The other end is a large, well equipped, kitchen with copper counters and sink, butcher block food prep station a pantry and sunset views.
The guest wing, newly created from an oversized solarium, contains two bedrooms and a cheery sunroom. The sunroom has comfortable seating, an additional dining table (for sunlit breakfasts) and a 43-inch 3-D HD TV with WIFI. The southeast bedroom has a queen bed, walk-in closet and a loft with a double bed, shelves for clothing or toys and plenty of extra floor space. The loft, accessible by Pueblo-style ladder, has a sloping ceiling, thus is best suited to younger guests who will enjoy the adventure. The west bedroom has 2 XL twin beds which can be made up as a king upon request. These three rooms each have 8-foot high glass French doors opening onto a long patio with a barbecue grill. This is the ideal place for summer evening cocktails and star-gazing. The two bedrooms’ floor-to-ceiling windows have custom wooden blinds to lower for filtering light or providing privacy. Bathing facilities in this wing are configured for flexibility, privacy and comfort, with two separate rooms containing sinks and commodes plus a room with a sunlit steam shower and an additional sink, countertop and cabinets. Hand-painted tiles, hand-crafted sinks and cabinets make these rooms a pleasure to use.
The enormous master bedroom is at the other end of the house, with a king bed, 2 chaise-longues for DVD or video viewing, and seven picture windows with views of a walled courtyard and Taos Mountain. Adjacent is a studio/workroom with a twin bed, views to the west and a door to the outside. Above these rooms is a private apartment with a long-term tenant who watches the house in our absence and can answer any questions which may arise. The master bath is off the front hall. It has a deep, soaking tub, a separate shower, a walk-in closet/ dressing room and hand-painted details throughout.

SPRING BREAK 2013
Everything went so wonderfully when we visited Taos and stayed at your beautiful home there. I fell in love with it immediately. I loved the large kitchen area and living area and bedrooms, bathrooms, views, everything! It was a perfect match for our family even though not all made it up there this year. Also Brook your artwork was very impressive…there was a piece in the workroom area with the house coming out of the head that was not hung up but on the table. We just looked at it….but didn’t touch…. but I thought that one was my favorite! I also loved the ones in the bedroom. While I was there I also read the Frida book you had in the living room because I am a Frida fan! All in all I would love to return to your home in the future when we go back to stay in Taos. Also the information book was very helpful and we cleaned and tidied up and left everything back in it’s place when we departed on Friday.

Fun Family Vacation at the Skies
Fun Family Vacation at the Skies
We stayed for nine days at the Skies with our five young kids, my parents and our family dog. There was plenty of room for everyone. My parents looked after the two youngest at the house while the rest of us drove the 16 miles up to the ski valley - a very easy drive, which took about 25 minutes. The house has a slightly discombobulated heating arrangement but once you get your head around which switch does what, the house holds a really comfortable temperature even when it was dropping down to -20F at night outside. The log fire is a great additional source of heat and the owner quickly arranged for more logs to be delivered when we ran out (included in the cost of the rental). The kids loved the large 3D TV with Netflix all set up and we found a solid Wi-Fi signal throughout the property. We only arranged the stay with the owner a couple of days prior. She was flexible and provided plenty of information via email and gave a couple of calls during our stay to ensure that everything was going well with our vacation. The property was clean throughout and as described on the website. The very large dining room table was great for all 9 of us to sit down together for dinner. In summary, this is a great property with a pleasant and easy to deal with owner. I strongly recommend the Skies and will definitely try to stay here again when we next visit Taos.

Gorgeous home with comforts for large family
Gorgeous home with comforts for large family
The detail in the beautiful Taos home is what attracted me with the pictures on VRBO and the owner's website. Everything about our stay went smoothly and the beautiful details in the home lived up to all our expectations. It is truly a work of art. The views of the mountains are incredible especially in the morning. It is in a rural location easily accessible to skiing or the artistic charm of Taos. We were there with our family for Thanksgiving and cooked a feast. The kitchen is fabulous and well supplied for the gourmet cook to the casual cook. We highly recommend this home if you are visiting the Taos area and need accommodations for family or larger group. The owner is charming and was extremely helpful in providing information not only on the home but the surrounding area attractions which are many. I left my ipad behind and they went out of their way to quickly get it in the mail to me and returned safely.

Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Our guest did not mention that she kindly augmented our kitchen equipment with a hand-held mixer which will go nicely with the fairly broad assortment of baking and cake pans. We enjoyed knowing that someone was filling the house with life during the Thanksgiving holiday!

I'd love to tell the world about your beautiful home in Taos. I tried to Blog, but not sure how to. Please advise how to best do it. Great site! I love all the tile work in the bathrooms, the views and the spiritual feeling of the property!

We really enjoyed staying at your house!!! It worked so well for our family. Like you said, there was plenty of room for all to spread out and be comfortable. With the music festival in town (which we also enjoyed), it was nice to be out of all the commotion. We did have trouble getting a movie to play on the sunroom TV and thought a card with some instructions would have been nice. We were able to get it going on the TV in the master bedroom. We ate all our dinners and breakfasts at the house and found the kitchen very nice to cook in and well stocked. I think we did completely fill the garbage cans, so thought I would mention you might need another can. We tried to separate the bottles and cans and set them off to the side. My little granddaughter really liked Frank* and enjoyed hunting for him in his haunts and saying Hi. His manners were perfect. I can see why you love your Taos house! *OWNER NOTE: Frank is the caretaker's old dog. There are now more garbage cans. There will be instructions for the sunroom TV after 11/14/12. Thank you, Lisa for your comments. We are always looking to improve!

About the owner: I am an artist with a home and studio in Peekskill, NY, in the Hudson Highlands. While I appreciate the energy and cultural offerings of NYC, I crave the peaceful quiet and open skies of Taos, for balance. My husband and I met at Middlebury College in Vermont. There we developed an appreciation of mountains, starry nights, wide pastures and the ability to find pleasure in being outdoors any season. In Taos I seek to create a place where we can share these things, cook, write, play music and make art.
Why the Owner Chose Taos:
People are drawn to Taos for its beauty, which has a spiritual quality. There are, of course, many beautiful places in the world and in the U.S. I chose Taos because I enjoy it in every season. I have found the people I have met in Taos to be open, engaging and multi-faceted, often creative, often athletic, frequently adventuresome. I look forward to learning more about the Indian, Hispanic and pioneer cultures which converged in New Mexico and continue to shape the customs, architecture and outlooks of its people. For me, and others, there are tastes and smells and sounds as well as sights to be discovered. There are abundant stretches of open lands and wilderness nearby.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love being surrounded by beautiful views all day and night. I enjoy taking long walks on the dirt roads from the house and bringing back rocks for the gardens. From the house and property, I have seen coyotes, hawks, small lizards, magpies, ravens, hummingbirds, quail, rabbits, magnificent lightening storms, wildflowers, festival fireworks and hot air balloons. I enjoy the sunshine pouring in the windows and the coolness of adobe in the summer. I enjoy hanging out a wash and having it dry in an hour. I enjoy eating and drinking wine with family and friends, with a fire in the fireplace. I enjoy grilling on the patio or cooking in the kitchen while watching the sun set. I enjoy having quiet corners to go to read, write or draw, both inside and out. I enjoy rehydrating in the pretty, tiled and glass brick steam shower or soaking in the deep tub. I enjoy the smell of sage in the air following a summer downpour. I like being in a house where a dog can trot around and enjoy itself for many of the same reasons I do.
