Vistas, indoors and out, grace this artist’s retreat in Taos, NM. Our comfortable home has ample room for peaceful meditation or socializing. The Skies is a sprawling adobe on nearly five acres of sage-covered mesa. 18-inch thick mica- and straw-flecked adobe walls, supporting vigas and a kiva fireplace, hand-made doors, copper and hand-painted Mexican tiles all give this home its roots in traditional Southwestern design. Four sets of 8-foot high, glass, screened French doors , vast windows and high ceilings, make the most of The Skies’ spectacular mountain views. Set in Las Colonias, The Skies is an easy and beautiful drive from the museums, restaurants, shops and galleries around Taos Plaza (6.2 miles), Taos Ski Valley (16.6 miles), Taos Pueblo (7.2 miles), the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (8.1 miles) and numerous other local treasures. Intriguing sights, shops and restaurants abound along these routes. Enter through adobe archways into the covered portal from which a heavy wooden door opens into the front hall, with a small seating area and original artwork. From there you may enter the great room, the heart of the house. At one end is a kiva fireplace, comfortable seating and tall, glass French doors. In the center is an elegant dining area with a table which can easily accommodate ten guests. The other end is a large, well equipped, kitchen with copper counters and sink, butcher block food prep station a pantry and sunset views. The guest wing, newly created from an oversized solarium, contains two bedrooms and a cheery sunroom. The sunroom has comfortable seating, an additional dining table (for sunlit breakfasts) and a 43-inch 3-D HD TV with WIFI. The southeast bedroom has a queen bed, walk-in closet and a loft with a double bed, shelves for clothing or toys and plenty of extra floor space. The loft, accessible by Pueblo-style ladder, has a sloping ceiling, thus is best suited to younger guests who will enjoy the adventure. The west bedroom has 2 XL twin beds which can be made up as a king upon request. These three rooms each have 8-foot high glass French doors opening onto a long patio with a barbecue grill. This is the ideal place for summer evening cocktails and star-gazing. The two bedrooms’ floor-to-ceiling windows have custom wooden blinds to lower for filtering light or providing privacy. Bathing facilities in this wing are configured for flexibility, privacy and comfort, with two separate rooms containing sinks and commodes plus a room with a sunlit steam shower and an additional sink, countertop and cabinets. Hand-painted tiles, hand-crafted sinks and cabinets make these rooms a pleasure to use. The enormous master bedroom is at the other end of the house, with a king bed, 2 chaise-longues for DVD or video viewing, and seven picture windows with views of a walled courtyard and Taos Mountain. Adjacent is a studio/workroom with a twin bed, views to the west and a door to the outside. Above these rooms is a private apartment with a long-term tenant who watches the house in our absence and can answer any questions which may arise. The master bath is off the front hall. It has a deep, soaking tub, a separate shower, a walk-in closet/ dressing room and hand-painted details throughout.

Art galleries; World Heritage Site/ National Historic Landmarks. Taos Pueblo and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge are among the sites distinct to Taos and nowhere else in the world. Visitors may also wish to see the 'off-the-grid' Earthship community nearby or sign up for a llama tour of the Gorge. Whitewater rafting is dependent upon rainfall and snowmelt, but a lazy float down the river is nearly always an option in warm weather. There are hot springs a bit north along the Rio Hondo as well as the hot spring spa, Ojo Caliente less than an hour away.

About the owner: I am an artist with a home and studio in Peekskill, NY, in the Hudson Highlands. While I appreciate the energy and cultural offerings of NYC, I crave the peaceful quiet and open skies of Taos, for balance. My husband and I met at Middlebury College in Vermont. There we developed an appreciation of mountains, starry nights, wide pastures and the ability to find pleasure in being outdoors any season. In Taos I seek to create a place where we can share these things, cook, write, play music and make art.
Why the Owner Chose Taos: People are drawn to Taos for its beauty, which has a spiritual quality. There are, of course, many beautiful places in the world and in the U.S. I chose Taos because I enjoy it in every season. I have found the people I have met in Taos to be open, engaging and multi-faceted, often creative, often athletic, frequently adventuresome. I look forward to learning more about the Indian, Hispanic and pioneer cultures which converged in New Mexico and continue to shape the customs, architecture and outlooks of its people. For me, and others, there are tastes and smells and sounds as well as sights to be discovered. There are abundant stretches of open lands and wilderness nearby.
The Unique Benefits at this House: I love being surrounded by beautiful views all day and night. I enjoy taking long walks on the dirt roads from the house and bringing back rocks for the gardens. From the house and property, I have seen coyotes, hawks, small lizards, magpies, ravens, hummingbirds, quail, rabbits, magnificent lightening storms, wildflowers, festival fireworks and hot air balloons. I enjoy the sunshine pouring in the windows and the coolness of adobe in the summer. I enjoy hanging out a wash and having it dry in an hour. I enjoy eating and drinking wine with family and friends, with a fire in the fireplace. I enjoy grilling on the patio or cooking in the kitchen while watching the sun set. I enjoy having quiet corners to go to read, write or draw, both inside and out. I enjoy rehydrating in the pretty, tiled and glass brick steam shower or soaking in the deep tub. I enjoy the smell of sage in the air following a summer downpour. I like being in a house where a dog can trot around and enjoy itself for many of the same reasons I do.
