Both the first and second floor flats of this 3 unit building are available for rent. Each flat is a 1600 sq ft independent vacation home with 2 bedrooms, 1 Japanese tatami mat which serves as an extra single bed and 1.5 bathrooms each.
Both first-floor and second floor are two bedroom flats in an original 1911 Edwardian house located in the center of San Francisco. Restored by the owner, the house has all the details of a classic turn-of-the-century San Francisco home, with all modern amenities.
The house is located between Duboce Park and the famous Alamo Square. Within walking distance are some of the city's greatest neighborhoods for exploring: the Castro, the Mission, Hayes Valley, the Fillmore and the Haight-Ashbury. Half a block away is lower Haight Street, filled with one of the city's most eclectic concentrations of unique cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops.
Public transportation is right outside the door to connect you to the entire city, and the MUNI is accessible in a two-block walk, from which you can easily access the Financial District, Union Square, the Embarcadero and North Beach.
These unique flats have original hardwood floors and parquet throughout, accented by brass fixtures. Towards the front of the house are the foyer, living room and dining room, which feature 12-foot ceilings and two working Victorian fireplaces. Period details such as original molding, stained glass windows, and 25 pivoting windows throughout make this house a special find.
The black-tiled bathrooms feature both a claw foot tub and a marble shower, with a separate WC across the hall. The two comfortably appointed double bedrooms in each flat have bay windows, which get full sunlight from morning to midday. The linen closet is stocked with plenty of linens and towels.
The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, dishwasher, full-sized fridge with water filter, coffee maker, blender, cooking supplies, and cabinets stocked with necessities for cooking. There is a separate utilitarian prep kitchen with second sink and butcher block, by which you access the back stairs down to the backyard.
PRIVATE GARAGE INCLUDED: enclosed single-car garages with coded entry adjacent to house are included with the rental at no additional charge. Take advantage of the safety and convenience of having your own garage, whether you are driving or renting a car during your stay.
Comments sent in from previous guests:
"We spent Thanksgiving week at the flat on Steiner this year with our family and had a great time. It's in a great location and convenient to lots of things. The parking spot in the garage is also nice, as parking is challenging in SF! We loved the flat itself - it's old and wonderful - comfortable beds and a good kitchen and dining room for a family to gather for meals. It served as a great home base from which to explore San Francisco. I'm glad we came here rather than spending a week in a small hotel room. We would love to be able to return in the future!"
-- The Grays from Texas
"This trip we wanted to avoid SF tourist areas and instead desired a neighborhood for our family vacation. The apartment is old and charming, with beautiful wood moldings, antiques, and large rooms. The kids found the space of a home and we loved the location. Parking on site was so helpful, but we often took the bus and trains and walked."
-- Margaret Chapello, Hinsdale, IL
"We had a fantastic week in San Francisco! Our stay in your place was great - worked out perfect for us as a home away from home and a base for our stay."
-- Vic Redding, Kailua, Hawaii
"Two friends and I just spent a week at the flat on Steiner Street. The location was perfect - convenient to bus lines, stores and restaurants. The apartment was roomy and comfortable. We would certainly return and recommend the accommodation to friends."
-- Maryellen Cronin, Boxford, Massachusetts
"Just wanted to let you know how perfect our stay at the flat was! It was nice to be able to spread out into a big space instead of being cooped up in a hotel room. And the area was cool! There were a ton of great places to eat and it was so convenient to the MUNI. Thanks again for letting us stay. It could not have been better."
-- Christina P., Largo, Florida
"This isn’t a bed and a room, it’s a home from home and an experience. Breakfast in the sun sitting at the kitchen bar or in the dining room - this is a cook’s kitchen and the supermarket is just down the road. You can plug in your laptop and stay ahead of your e-mail or run your business. At the end of the day, lie on the sofa listening to music or watching TV before turning in to sleep in peace and comfort. I’ll be back."
-- Lesley Harwood, Wellington, New Zealand
"We loved every minute that we stayed in your wonderful home. It came with everything any family could want and more. Thank you for having it there for families to find, stay and enjoy San Francisco from, it was a great home base."
-- The Stewart Family, Texas
"Our family has recently spent 5 nights at Steiner Street and the description given by its owner and the comments made by previous guests are an understatement. The apartment has everything one could think of to make a stay comfortable, not to mention the space. To be able to sit in the back yard on balmy evenings enjoying a glass or two of Californian red wine before walking less than 5 minutes to any one of a half a dozen reasonably priced restaurants was better than home. That is unless you decide to stay in and prepare a meal in the wonderfully appointed kitchen. There are even sharp cooking knives! Should we ever have the chance to return to San Francisco, we wouldn't stay anywhere else."

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good: 1. It's big. 2. It's externally attractive 3. good location, 5 minutes from Church St & Duboce muni. The Bad: 1. Dirty, eg the back kitchen door hadn't been cleaned for years, the seating in the dining area was badly stained and torn, the whole place absolutely stank, we had to open all the windows and use half a can of Febrese before the living room was usable. There was trash in the corner of the living room. The Ugly Gloomy, feeble lighting, dark, depressing, browny/grey ancient looking wallpaper, the wallpaper in the second bedroom had been half stripped off, then left. There was one dishtowel, it had two large holes in it. The curtains were flimsy, the lace curtains were ripped and frayed. The carpet in the living room was threadbare and much of the furniture was ripped, smelled very dirty and looked like it had just been hauled out of a dumpster. We spent as little time in this place as possible. We raised our disappointment with the nice manager (Sean) but he said his hands were tied, but he'd email the owner. We never heard anything back. I recommend this flat if you would like to spend your vacation in a place redolent of a fourth rate old folks home.

Best Place to Stay in SF

A few friends and I came to SF from LA and were blown away by the flat. The size, set up and location were perfect. It was exactly what we were looking for but even better. The pictures dont do it justice so be ready to be pleasantly surprised. There are plenty of amazing restaurants within walking distance and the neighbor seemed safe and quiet. We stayed on the 2nd level and just loved the spacious layout, balcony, long hallways, and several doors to make more private need be. We will be returning to SF and staying on Steiner Street again for sure!

Great Location in the City

We just got back from a 10-day excursion in the bay area. We spent 4 days/nights in Marin Country and 5 at this house in the city. This house was the perfect location for everything we wanted to do: Close walk to Alamo Square, Buena Vista Park (best view of the city) and we even walked all the way to the center of Golden Gate State Park. It was also easy to get on the the N line (Duboce and Church) downtown or out to the beach or zoo. I just loved stepping out of "my" Victorian flat to catch the train to my downtown conference - it was the real city deal - much better than a hotel with all the tourists. And the apartment is so big that my son could be playing his music in the back bedroom and my husband couldn't hear it all from the living room in the front of the house. Although there's a huge Safeway in walking distance, we enjoyed venturing into the neighborhood to find a different restaurant every night. Great ethnic food (Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, Caribbean...) and we found a funky little no-frills fish restaurant down on Church and Market (Woodhouse Fish Co) that serves everything fresh at a great price. If you like all things old and historic and hate the tourist mob scene - this place is for you.

This beautiful Victorian is far more exquisite than the pictures could portray...you are in for a wonderful surprise! It was much larger than we expected and actually had two wood burning fireplaces that you were welcome to use....and we did. I spent hours looking at the beautiful woodwork and details, pretending that it was my home! (the lighting and ceilings alone!) There were also so many thoughtful details....a well stocked pantry with those items you might have forgotten, a barista expresso maker, a real (but charming!) kitchen where it was a joy to prepare meals, and even a "Secret Garden" out back. Add to that how welcoming Sasha and Sean were and you are in for a treat! We stayed with out four children as the little ones shared the Japanese Tatami mat. Our daughter now works in San Francisco and we absolutely plan to return....no need to look further! Another blessing is how helpful Sean was answering questions as you are considering a stay. (He even sent an extra photo of the dining room...he is a patient man!) There are two separate flats by the way...we were on the first floor which is apparently smaller (can't imagine how spacious the second floor one is!) We didn't see that one, but imagine it's just as lovely. Regarding the neighborhood, it's very San Francisco! Lots of character, neat little restaurants, and just a block or two from the "Painted Ladies" near Alamo Square. There were a few "characters" here and there on the streets but nothing that made us feel uncomfortable or unsafe. A great opportunity to share with the kiddos about city life! (PS We drove to San Francisco and you can't believe how great it was to have a free garage right at the house, a rarity in the city.)

This property was perfect for us and our adult sons (ages 18 and 21) in our first trip to San Francisco. We, too, had no trouble locating the address, though the scaffolding was still up. We appreciated the low-key vibe of the neighborhood and owner, who had a lot of good advice as well. Would definitely stay again.

My wife and I took my parents for their first trip to SF. The house is centrally located where a huge portion of the city is within walking distance. The rental was exactly as described and easy to find (I think the cabbie took advantage of the reviewer from Dublin). I recommend this house to everyone we know.

Although this property was accurately listed regarding location, it was difficult for us and the taxi driver to locate as it bore no resemblence to the picture in the listing. The entire facade of the house was shrouded in green netting over scaffolding. I think it most disingenuous to not advise any potential renter that your property is being renovated and that there will be noisy work being carried out during the daytime. In addition, the landlord demanded extra money as he had been charged commission by Paypal - despite this being his choice for payment. Could not recommend.
Owner response:Thank you for your comment. Renovations are complete. The house has been repainted and the scaffolding removed. Paypal is not my preference, as they charge for transactions.
