Our fishing group of nine found Aunt Dora's cabin ideal in every respect. It is lovely to behold, inside and out, with all the amenities one could hope for; a fully stocked kitchen, a long roomy dining table where we all could sit for our meals, a most comfortable living room with a wonderful fireplace, a huge screened porch that was perfect for card playing, very comfortable beds, and a large deck furnished with comfy Adirondack chairs for lounging in the sun, and a fine gas grill that we used over and over. And of course the fishing was very productive, on both the West and East branch of the Ausable. We are definitely coming back to this place....Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Glad you had good fishing, and we look forward to your return. SAd to say, we can't guarantee the trout will always be as cooperative!

Our stay at Aunt Dora's house was comfortable and relaxing. We experienced a power outage after a storm but enjoyed a fire in the wood stove by candlelight while sharing stories of our adventures in Keene Valley and Lake Placid from the day. Beds provided warm blankets for the cool nights and the deck was a pleasant place to gather during the day. The folks at The Mountaineer were very helpful and our meals the ADK Cafe and the Noonmark Diner were great. We also enjoyed some shopping in Lake Placid. Our group enjoyed our stay and would return in the future.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Many folks find Keene Valley even nicer in the fall than in summer!

Aunt Dora's house is rustic in the way of a mountain cabin, yet spacious enough for a family reunion. It has loads of character... an antique organ, a lovely old photo of Aunt Dora as a girl, a superb collection of books, and a simplicity that seems just right for time spent in the Adirondacks. I fell in love with the screened porch from the moment I arrived. There was a gentle rain falling, and it was so peaceful sitting in there with my daughter and my niece and a glass of wine. The large deck in front of the house was also a great place for stories and conversation, and the huge living room hosted several rounds of our old campfire songs to the accompaniment of three guitars. In the morning there was usually a gathering in the kitchen as people drifted in for coffee. Dinner time found us setting up a buffet on the kitchen table, and some took their plates out to the screened porch while others gravitated to the dining room table. At all times there was plenty of room to sit and read a book by oneself or to join in whatever was going on at the moment. It just never felt crowded. The entire family enjoyed the week at Aunt Dora's, and I personally would go back in a heartbeat!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.
Owner response: This guest and his family seem to have hit on the features that my family and I have been enjoying for more than a century. We hope they'll return next year!

The Rustic Keene Valley Lodge is the perfect place for a large family gathering. With its spacious porch, deck and front lawn, there's plenty of room to socialize. There are chairs and tables throughout the house and deck to accommodate everyone. With 6 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 2 half bathrooms and sinks in most bedrooms, all guests were comfortable. The location, just off the main road, but secluded by trees and no other dwellings was perfect. The Lodge's location is convenient to area attractions and affords privacy to congregate outdoors in a natural setting. The interior furnishings, stone fireplace and rustic decor provide a true Adirondack camp experience with all the amenities. The rental process was made easy by the friendly and accommodating owner. Our downstate guests all want to gather here again in the near future. This unique rental is a real find!Owner response: We look forward to your next visit. Remember that we offer a discount to repeat visitors!

Aunt Dora's cabin was a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are all very roomy and neat. The only problem is that the stay was so short we really did not get a chance to settle in. The highlight was seeing the blooming lady slipper out back. LisaOwner response: The lady's slipper plants return each year, but last only a week or so . . .

We visited Aunt Dora's Hopuse last summer with three other couples (no children that visit) and plan to return this year or next. It's a woinderful mountain retreat, close to hiking trails and walking distance from the village. Booking was easy, and the place was spotless when we arrived. Perhaps the nicest aspect of the house is a large porch with floor-to-ceiling screens on three sides; we could lounge there for hours on drizzly days, conversing, reading, and drinking coffee. The beds are comfortable, with heavy wool blankets (early mornings can be chilly, even in September, as the mountains tower on all sides) and a cozy fireplace in the big room that serves as both dining room and gathering place. The funky tableware doesn't match, but it is a homey spot -- I almost feel that Aunt Dora was a member of my family!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Why the Owner Chose Keene:
Great-aunt Dora Sachs Sommers built this house in early 1947 so that she and her children - Dorothy, Alice, and George - could spend vacations from St. Paul, Minnesota in the community that she and her parents had come to love since first visiting Keene Valley in 1874. Her parents' house, Waldfried, was located just up the hill behind Dora's, but has since been razed. Her brother, my grandfather, built a house just north of Waldfried and across Rushing Brook; that house remains in the family and is still used by several generations of Sachses.
